Reimagining Education…
The Academic year 2020 -2021 … the year of the inexorable Corona Virus Pandemic …ferocious,
cataclysmic, unprecedented …when the world stood still, in lockdown, and witnessed helplessly the trail
of death and devastation … a tale of epic proportions!
Globally education systems were also disrupted, and schools and colleges were forced into indefinite
closure.
However, human history is an exemplum of apocalypses as well as Survivals …the human spirit prevails
over all and to quote an overused but apt jingle – “When the going gets tough, the tough get going” So,
while the present looked bleak, dismal and hopeless, we, the educationists at A. N. College, looked
forward, to the future of our dear students… to better times…
The support staff and dedicated faculty at our college adapted to the ‘new world’ and innovated new
systems of teaching, learning, evaluation, research and extension activities. We at A. N. College became
the torch-bearers of change through technology and digitisation. A paradigm shift was executed-from the
emphasis on classroom integration and interconnectivity of a globalised world to the new norms of social
distancing, isolation and quarantine. Throughout the lockdown and thereafter, our teachers conducted
online classes and completed their syllabi with students sitting safely at home. A plethora of online
academic activities were organised—Student Development Programmes, Faculty Development
Programmes, Online Quiz, Webinars and Web lectures to name a few. Varied software was installed for
easy access of students and faculty- Zoom, Webex, Google, Microsoft Interactive platform. Online
learning site Coursera offered free courses for the students and faculty members of our college. 4325
courses from the worlds best universities were on offer for access.
The pandemic brought in its wake numerous lessons for mankind, a prominent one being social
responsibility, compassion and sense of brotherhood of all fellow sufferers. The volunteers of the college
N.S.S and the cadets of N.C.C tried to fulfill their duty as good citizens and did commendable social
service in the hour of desperate need. From crowd management to distribution of masks to spreading
awareness, these young soldiers braved the risk of infection, while all stayed safely home.
It is indeed a proud moment for me when we review our initiatives, both technological and human, in
this year of crisis and challenges. I would like to thank all the members of the IQAC for their leadership
and guidance. I am grateful for the cooperation, perseverance and dedication of the A. N. College family
in participating in our united quest for overcoming tremendous odds and achieving excellence in the
midst of tumultuous times…

College Profile
Located in downtown Patna, A.N. College sits on 13 acres of lush green gardens. Co-educational
and multidisciplinary, it offers a plethora of affordable, high quality educational programmes. A premier
institution of Bihar, students from the hinterland of Bihar, Jharkhand and Nepal aspire to get admission
into this prestigious institution.
Established in 1956 by ‘Bihar Vibhuti’, Dr Anugrah Narayan Sinha, who was a progressive
visionary with the mission to make available higher education for all aspiring Biharis. A. N. College is
named after this illustrious educationist, freedom- fighter, activist and statesman. Initially, the
Gardanibagh Tutorial College at Patna High School was established, only evening classes were held as
the objective was to make academics accessible to employees working in various departments. In 1959,
the college was shifted to its current premises when, due to the initiative of Anugrah Babu, Patna
Improvement Trust invested the college with 13 acres of land. Subsequently, the college has grown and
evolved under the aegis of the philanthropic Sinha family, Sri Satyendra Narayan Sinha, his wife Srimati
Kishori Sinha and their son Sri Nikhil Kumar and other educationists like Justice K. B. N. Singh, Justice
Birendra Pratap Singh, Dr Sheo Narayan Singh and Sri Sunil Mukherji. The college was a constituent
unit of Magadh University till 17 March 2018. Thereafter, upon the establishment of Patliputra
University (which bifurcated from Magadh University) on 18th March 2018, A. N. College has become
the new university’s leading constituent higher educational institution.
The college has a huge and ever-expanding infrastructure including 16 large buildings, 72
classrooms, 31 well equipped laboratories, 2 badminton courts, 1 volleyball court and one cricket
practice pitch. An auditorium and a multipurpose hall is under construction and a new entrance gate and
boundary wall have been built.
The campus is Wireless Network enabled and the computer labs have 334 computers. Besides a
Central library, there are 23 Departmental Seminar Libraries. The Central Library is automated through
the SOUL 2.0 software provided by INFLIBNET centre. The students and teachers can also avail on-
line resources (2 lakh e-books and 4000 e-journals) through N-List subscription.
The college encourages all round development of students and has facilitated their participation in social
service, sports and cultural activities also. Their distinctions in different competitions have brought
laurels to the institution. Sports Day and Youth Festival are periodically organised by the college. It is a
matter of immense pride for the college that its alumni now hold senior positions in both, the public as
well as private sector companies. The alumni have also been appointed as scientists in prestigious
institutions like ISRO, BARC, NPL, MECON, NEERI, CAPART and TERI in India, NASA in USA
and universities in Europe. Campus placements and selections are a regular feature for this college.
The college has grown from strength to strength and today nearly 10,000 students from all over
the country are enrolled here. The faculty consists of 134 teachers including permanent and guest faculty
as well asvisiting faculty for specialised lectures. There is a team of very efficient support staff at the
Administrative Office.
The college has 27 departments where Science, Arts, Social Sciences, Vocational, Professional,
Education and Language courses are run. A Commerce department is due to open in the next session.
Most of these departments run U.G, P.G, and Ph.D. courses.
The college conducts pioneering research work with funds provided by agencies like UGC, DST,
NEERI, UNICEF, BAARC and various distinguished agencies from U.K. and Europe.
Today, A. N. College has gained recognition for the quality of its education, research and
extension programmes. Consistently engaged in collaborative activities of research with academic
linkages with industries and institutions in India and off- shore. It has the honour of being accorded “Star
College Status” by the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India. The NAAC team has
accredited the college with an A Grade for three successive cycles -2005,2011and 2017.The college is
ever in the process of revitalising its potential for excellence to facilitate wholistic education for its
students in order equip them with contemporary skills, techniques and knowledge to face all professional
challenges…

Reimagining Education…
The pedagogy at A.N. College ensures meaningful classroom interactions (both online and offline)
between educators and learners. The goal is to help students build on prior learning and develop skills,
attitudes and critical thinking.
Strategic Goals :
• To arouse interest in course curriculum
• To develop skill for learning among students
• To increase a sense of self efficacy along with a feeling of motivation.
• To curb student drop outs and improve attendance.
• To strengthen the student-teacher relationship through continuous mentoring and guidance
The college is soon to be a part of UMIS (University Management Information System) which will
enable the utilization of the benefits of information in admission module. Admissions are done as per
guidelines of Patliputra University and the State Government Reservation Policy. The college organizes
orientation/ induction programmes for new students as they begin their academic career. The Academic
Calendar formulated by Patliputra University as per the guidelines of the Governor's Secretariat and the
Government of Bihar is followed. A centralized routine is prepared by routine-in-charge of the college
and is sent to each department. The Head of Departments, in consultation with the teachers of the
department finalize the departmental routine in consonance with the centralized routine.

Evaluation plays an enormous role in the learning process as it helps teachers and students to
improvise on teaching and learning.
• At the U.G level students are evaluated through regularly conducted internal examinations
• At the P.G level Choice Based Credit system has been introduced since 2012 and evaluation
takes place through Mid Semester tests, attendance, dissertations, seminar participation etc.
• As part of college strategy to develop transparent and robust assessment, Internal examinations
and Continuous Internal Assessments (CIA) have been initiated.
• The university has also proposed to initiate the Feedback Form for both teachers and students
which will be uploaded on the college website.
• The college is in the process of providing Student's Satisfaction Survey on overall institutional
performance through its official weblink.
During the 2020-21 Covid Pandemic, a paradigm shift was executed - from the emphasis on classroom
integration and interconnectivity of a globalised world to the new norms of social distancing, isolation
and quarantine. Throughout the lockdown and thereafter, our teachers conducted online classes and
completed their syllabi with students sitting safely at home. A plethora of online academic activities
were organised—Student Development Programmes, Faculty Development Programmes, Online Quiz,
Webinars and Web lectures to name a few.
Following UGC guide lines, the teaching faculty uploaded study material and lectures on the Patliputra
University Website, for the benefit of our college students as well as the students of the whole university.
Various software were used for easy access of students and faculty- Zoom, Webex, Google, Microsoft
Interactive platform. Online learning site Coursera offered free courses for the students and faculty
members of our college.4325 courses from the world’s best universities were on offer for access, leading
to numerous certificates and diplomas being bestowed upon successful teachers and student participants.
What has been remarkable and highly innovative is the increase in successful online multi-lateral skill
development education spawned by the forced quarantine of the intelligentsia during Covid times.

are regularly organised. A survey and monitoring programme of pension distribution was
assigned to the college by the Dept. of Social Welfare, Govt. of Bihar. One of the most important
problems encountered during the implementation of the initiative was the lack of education and
awareness amongst the people . A.N College fulfils its commitment to academic integrity
through education and values.

05 JUNE, 2021 WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY
On the occasion of 49th World Environment Day, multiple events were organized by the students of the
Post Graduate Department of Environmental Sciences, A.N. College, Patna through the digital platform.
This World Environment Day marks the beginning of the UN Decade on “Ecosystem Restoration (2021-
2030)”, a global mission to revive billions of hectares from forests to farmlands, from the top of
mountains to the depth of the sea.
In the concluding speech, the H.O.D, Prof. (Dr.) Tripti Gangwar stressed on the importance of protection
and revival of environment. To quote her, “The world has been dealing with the pandemic for the past
one and a half years. I believe we can use this opportunity to reflect upon our actions as the so-called
dominant species of the planet. Destruction of the Natural Habitat for Animals and Plants, an ideal
condition has been created for pathogens, like corona viruses to rapidly mutate and spread among
populous. Through Rehabilitation and Creation of Healthy Ecosystems, one can enhance their livelihoods
in tandem with counteracting climate change, thus slowing down the collapse of global biodiversity. The
students have shown their rigor with their initiatives and projects, to spread awareness among the public
about the devastating implications that collapsing ecosystems can have upon the life on planet Earth.”
end quote.
