Lieutenant Governor’s Greeting

Dear Division 21 Key Clubbers,

My name is James Erdman. I joined Key Club

in my freshmen year of high school, and I

became the Vice President of Nottingham’s

club in the beginning of my junior year. I was

recently elected to be the new Lieutenant

Governor of Division 21. During my 3 years

of membership in Key Club, I’ve been able to participate in a variety of

events that not only have benefited and given back to my community,

but that I've truly and genuinely enjoyed. Throughout this time, I came to a few realizations.

The first was that I’m passionate about Key Club. I was born in Crouse Hospital, and

I’ve lived in the city of Syracuse for my entire life. I think that growing up in the inner-city

and attending the city school district has given me a lot, and it’s cost me very little. So,

opportunities to give back to my community are enticing for me, and Key Club has provided

a direct and tangible way of doing just that.

Another realization that I've come to is that the community service aspect of the club

is not the only motivator for our members, at least at Nottingham. There’s another huge

reason why Key Club is such a popular group. And no, I’m not talking about college

applications either. It’s the same reason I joined the club, and it’s why I’ve enjoyed every event

I’ve taken part in with Nottingham’s Key Club. It’s the friendship, positivity, and enthusiasm

that members bring with them to each event, fundraiser, or meeting.

As Vice President of my school’s club, I strove to combine these two aspects of Key

Club. I strongly believe that the enthusiasm and positivity that exists in our small club

community can be translated into the larger scale of the community that we serve. As

Lieutenant Governor, I hope to cultivate this enthusiasm in each Key Club in our division, as

well as representing it in district board meetings.

Last year, our club was doing a fundraiser for suicide prevention. We were selling

rubber bracelets for $1 each. I was given a plastic bag containing 18 of the bracelets, and told I

had around a month to sell them. The next day during school, I quickly discovered that if I

simply asked everyone I saw “ would you like to buy a bracelet for suicide prevention for $1?”

I could sell a few in every class. By the end of the day, the 18 bracelets in my bag were replaced

by $18- plus some extra donations. With such a small effort, I was able to accomplish

something substantial. I’m sure that the role of Lieutenant Governor will require a much

larger effort, but that doesn't put me off. It only excites me about what I can help to achieve.

Service Spotlight

Relay for Life Nottingham Key Club worked hard to fundraise for our team for Relay for Life in Syracuse. We ended up shattering our initial goal of $1,000 by raising $1,693 to help the American Cancer Society in the fight against cancer. Relay for Life was held in Syracuse’s Carrier Dome, and Key Clubbers participated in fun activities and fundraising all night - from 6pm to 6am.

Eliminate Week Eliminate week is May 2nd-6th! This is one week focused on fundraising for the Eliminate Project. If each club in our division could hold a fundraiser during this week, we could make a great impact! Here are some ideas for fundraisers: • Give-something-up day For one day, everyone gives up something they might normally buy, like a cup of coffee or a pack of gum, and instead donates the money to the Eliminate Project. You can get family members and friends to participate as well. • Bake Sales • Be creative. If you have a tried and true way of fundraising, or a

new idea, go for it!

Leadership Training Conference I attended LTC this year for the first time. After the weekend was over, my only regret was that I had not attended the event in my past years in Key Club. The experience of meeting fellow Key Clubbers from around New York State tremendously widened my view of Key Club as an organization and as a community. From the moment I set foot in The Desmond Hotel on Friday to the moment I left on Sunday morning, I was welcomed by everyone, and supported in a community that was new to me. I wish that every Key Clubber could experience LTC. Here’s the thing - you can. Next year’s LTC will be held March 31st to April 2nd. I hope to see all of you there! -James Erdman, Division 21 Lt. Governor

LTC is something that I hold dear to me. It is truly an experience of a lifetime (well at least in my 17 years). When you read the words "leadership training conference," what comes to mind is probably a bunch of kids trying to develop leadership skills. That happens but even greater than that is the degree of community building with people from all over New York State. At LTC I was able to interact and have fun with super accepting Key Clubbers who aren't afraid of putting themselves out there to offer hugs, sell mix tapes, or talk to complete strangers just for kicks. LTC is definitely a highlight of not only my senior year but also my high school experience. -Victoria Wong, Liverpool High School Key Club VP

it in mind for next year!
