while getting the opportunity to treat a truly unique population. Past and current patients include veterans from every war with US involvement since WWII.
The Sgt. Clint Ferrin Dental Clinic has found that the demand for its services is vast as it is currently receiving over 100 applications a month. The clinic is looking to start up branches at other dental schools across the country to help meet the demand for its services. For more information on how you can start a branch at your school please visit our website at www.veteransdentistry.org or email [email protected].

How do we Advocate these Issues? The ASDA Legislative Grassroots Network (LGN) is dedicated to increasing dental student understanding and involvement in the
legislative process, both locally and nationally. Leaders involved in the ASDA LGN work to educate ASDA members, dental organizations and legislators about issues important to dental students. The LGN provides students with the information they need on matters concerning dentistry and other health issues. Any student who wants to play a role in shaping the legislative decisions that determine the future of dentistry is encouraged to join the ASDA LGN.
For more information contact Sally Ortega ([email protected]) the District 10 Legislative Liaison
Lunch and Learns: YES!“We encourage the administrators of all U.S. accredited dental schools to grant ASDA leaders the autonomy to select and invite dental supply companies and speakers to visit their school in order to heighten their knowledge and broaden their exposure to dental products prior to venturing into dental practice.”
Amalgam: SAFE!“Based on available scientific data, the continued use of amalgam as a restorative material does not pose a health hazard to the nonallergic patient. The removal of clinically serviceable dental amalgam restorations solely to substitute a material that does not contain mercury is unwarranted, improper, unethical and intentional misrepresentation to the patient.”
Midlevel Providers: Depends“ASDA endorses expanded functions for dental auxiliaries only when each has received the appropriate education and training to guarantee competence, and when such functions fall within the laws established by their respective state of employment.”
“only a qualified dentist should perform the following functions, including but not limited to:
a. Examination, diagnosis and treatment planningb. Prescribing work authorizationsc. Performing irreversible dental proceduresd. Prescribing drugs and/or other medications”
What would ASDA Do? Official Positions on the IssuesEach issue we will explore a few of the hot topics that everyone is talking about and explain what ASDA’s position is.
Outreach Programs: KNOW THE RULES!
B-8 Dental Outreach ProgramsStudents in U.S. dental schools and predental programs who participate in a dental outreach program (e.g., international service trips, domestic service trips, volunteerism in underserved areas, etc.) are strongly encouraged:
a. To adhere to the ASDA Code of Ethics and the ADA Principles of Ethics and Code of Professional Conduct;
b. To be directly supervised by dentists licensed to practice in the United States or by faculty at a CODA-accredited dental school;
c. To perform only procedures for which the volunteer has received proper education and training.

The new D1’s at Midwestern are filling up all four classes for the first time!
The new D1’s at Midwestern are filling up all four classes for the first time. There is no better time to be apart of MWU - college of dentistry! The new class of 2015 has arrived and as our scrub colors suggests..."its a boy! In a 4x100 relay race, all legs of the race are important, but the race cannot be won without running that baton down the home stretch. Ours is a responsibility to take it, and run with it; we've been given an "ironed out", "waxed up and polished"
baton to carry with pride to the finish line. What a legacy to be involved in and what a feeling to know we are making history with every early Tuesday morning test and every waxed up tooth. Thank you to those that have paved the way, and it is our honor and pleasure to bring up the rear in being the fourth class of Dental students at Midwestern, to finally fill all four classes.
I am a third year student and graduated from the University of Dayton in Ohio in 2009. Go Flyers! I grew up in Barrington a suburb of Chicago, but I love the Arizona sun. I have been involved in ASDA
at Midwestern for the past three years being the Community Service Representative my first year, Vice president and then President after Chrissy Tiller became our District 10 Trustee my second year, and now the President. ASDA has given me great opportunities to promote my University while enhancing my educational experience.
I have been privileged to collaborate with many students and the supportive faculty at MWU as well as networking with other school leaders. I am looking forward to working with the District Cabinet and increasing communication among the new Chapter Presidents. Our Chapter and school have some great events in the near future. We are getting ready to graduate our first class this coming spring of 2012, which is very exciting for MWU!
Our chapter has and changed so much in the past few years. Our summer Simulation Course for pre-dental students has been extremely
successful, and expanded to multiple weekends with over 200 participants. Providing education opportunities for our members, we hosted our first Vendor fair last year which had over 20 vendors present. Also, we had our first Give Kids a Smile event last April where we treated over 260 children! This fall we hold a new community service event Super Sealant Saturday on October 8th, where we hope to treat around 400 children. In order to create new events and increase member involvement we have restructured by adding new committees, positions, and even a SPEC Chapter.
Membership has increased at our Chapter and our Dean, Dr. Russell Gilpatrick, generously gave our members a new incentive. The MWU-College of Dental Medicine has always covered the first year of enrollment into ASDA, but now if our members renew for both their 2nd and 3rd year the CDM will cover their 4th year in ASDA. It was great to have our hard work recognized nationally at the Annual Session in Anaheim receiving “Honorable Mention” for the Ideal ASDA Most Improved Chapter. Our past ASDA leaders have really set a great foundation for our ASDA Chapter to keep succeeding, and I am excited to watch our Chapter continue to thrive!

My name is Tyler Boyd and I am a 3rd year dental student at University of Washington. I have been married for almost 5 years and have two awesome baby boys of 3 years and 2.5
weeks. My family and I moved to Seattle from Idaho for dental school and have loved our time in Seattle. Over the last few years we have enjoyed meeting and getting to know classmates and making friendships. Between the social events, intramural sports, and special events my oldest son has come to love going to anything that involves my classmates, remembering many of them by name. I know that amidst the time spent in the lab, studying, and staying busy my family and I will remember this time as an awesome experience.
This year started off with several “>irst annuals”, meaning events that were held for the >irst time but will likely be held next year and so on. One of them was the “Dive into Dentistry event” ‐ spearheaded by Stona Jackson, the Pre‐dental Chair. It was modeled after the events held at UNLV and Midwestern and provided an opportunity for pre‐dental students to see and DO many of the things we learn school. They had the chance to take impressions, practice sutures, drill on teeth (Ivorine teeth of course), wax, and practice interviewing for dental school. It was a huge success with great attendance and help from many dental students.

The UNLV chapter has undergone quite a bit of restructuring this year, but we have been making exciting progress. Starting in June 2011, we welcomed an executive cabinet of 31 officers and have hit the ground running since. Some exciting
changes have included: the development of our own branch of SPEA and LGN, successfully petitioning our dean to convert our chapter to autobill, and establishing a mentor‐mentee program with the Southern Nevada Dental Society.
In July, we held our first annual Summer Family BBQ and invited students, friends and families; guests were treated to a free barbecue, water guns, face painting, and bouncy horse races. In August, we held our “Welcome Back Party” at a 6,000 square foot Las Vegas mansion and released the first edition of our digital newsletter. In September, we hosted our first of two vendor fairs, with a record‐breaking 29 vendors in attendance. We also held our first Crest‐Oral B event, providing free screenings and fluoride varnish for children in the community.
In October, UNLV ASDA coordinated the entire Hospitality committee for the 2011 ADA convention, sending 268 students to volunteer at the convention. Finally, we recently combined with UNLV ADEA to host the Miles for Better Smiles 5k fundraiser to benefit patients at our school. We have continued our strong tradition of lunch and learns as well. Currently in the works: UNLV ASDA sweatshirts and t‐shirts, another Crest Oral‐B event (Halloween party screenings), an ADPAC drive, and a tentative “Cowboys and Indians” party in November. We will be sending four officers to Regionals in San Antonio, Texas, and all of us are looking forward to meeting the rest of the district during our District 10 meeting. Huge thanks to Danielle Bauer, Erin Kato, Alex Barton, Brittany Bensch, and Chrissy Tiller for all of the invaluable help and support during our chapter’s restructuring period. Also, a big thanks to our District 10 Cabinet for doing such a fantastic job!

The School of Dentistry at Oregon Health and Science University is currently in the midst of a new and exciting time. The month of October marks the start of a new era in dental education in the state of Oregon with the construction of the new, state of the art, LEED certified dental school. For the past year, many of our faculty and administrators have devoted numerous hours of their free time working out the fine details that have made the dream of a new dental school possible. There have been mixed reactions about the new dental school from the students, but the overall feel is excitement that new dental students will get a great opportunity to experience a new wave of dentistry with the new facility.
As far as the ASDA chapter goes, we have recently elected new officers and are excited about the prospect of the incoming class. We had a record number of applicants for ASDA leadership positions this year who have brought fresh ideas that we are excited to implement in the next year. The future of the dental school and ASDA are bright in the near future and we are looking forward to the excitement and challenges that will be present in the upcoming years.
Hello District,
Here at Roseman we are in the beginning stages of developing our chapter. Our current officers consist of Khealynn Harris as Vice President, James Schoff as Treasurer and Ali Dawood as Secretary. We are working with the other organizations deciding what the responsibilities of each will be, i.e. ADEA heading the SIM Lab and ASDA organizing the Vendor Fair. Soon we will submit our Constitution and Bylaws, as well as elect a Membership Chair and Legislative Liason.
We look forward to establishing our ASDA Chapter, and learning from each of you as we evolve.

Life As We Know It A snapshot of the ups, downs and in-betweens on the path to becoming a dentist.
While the excitement of summer comes to a close, a new excitement fills the MWU simulation clinic... It is the class of 2014, anxious to acquire those hand skills so desperately needed in the coming years. With the NBDE part I in the rear-view mirror, we are ready to continue our path to becoming dental professionals.
Personally, I am looking forward to the extra time we will have in the simulation clinic. During the first year we only got to spend one day per week in sim lab and out of the lecture hall. Now we will be spending two to three days per week in the pre-clinic and that’s a huge relief.
I’m also glad to have the rigors of our 1st year Basic Sciences course completed. Although, I think my classmates will agree, second year demands just as much time, if not more than the first year. When I asked a 3rd year student what surprised him most about the D2 year, he replied, “The days are even longer than D1”
But there is light at the end of the tunnel now and were getting ready to head into the Dental Institute. Even though the schedule might seem too demanding for anything other than school, if you know where to look, you will always find a group of students making time to take a break. Especially the D2 class. They can regularly be found in the cafeteria on the foosball or ping-pong tables, in the gym or basketball courts. There’s even a little time to enjoy the great Arizona fall and go outside to play sand volleyball and toss around a football or a Frisbee. No matter the activity it is refreshing to have a nice balance of work and play—something I think will be necessary for the D2 year.
