The District 97P Public Relations Manager and her team

are bringing you the 2nd issue of D97P newsletter 2016-

2017. It is now also the 92nd anniversary of Toastmasters

International. The first meeting of Toastmasters was held

on October 22, 1924 by its founder Ralph Smedley.

District 97P has expanded its wings to 59 clubs. The four

new clubs which have just been officially chartered in this

new term 2016-2017 are as follows:-

Danang, Novartis, Bangkok Outliers, and Thai FDA. In addition, there are five additional /senior

leaders who have been appointed as members of District Executive Committee.

The District has organized the significant 1st Judge training. The Club Presidents, Area

Directors, and Division Directors have organized their Humorous speech and Evaluation

contests. Below is a quick summary to reflect on some of these moments.

September 2016

There were 63 members joining the 1st Judge Training

on September 3 at Christian University, Bangkok.

October 2016

There were several Humorous Speech & Evaluation

Contests - club, area, and division levels. However, some

have been postponed due to Thailand’s mourning period.

The 92th anniversary

is an exciting milestone

in our organization’s history.

The Toastmasters Journey Toastmasters began as a series of speaking clubs organized by Ralph C. Smedley during his time working for the YMCA (Young Men's Christian Association) in Bloomington, Illinois, United States. As director of education at the YMCA, Smedley saw a need for the men in the community to learn how to speak, conduct meetings, plan programs and work on committees, and he wanted to help them.

Smedley decided to organize a club where they could learn these skills in a social environment, and the men responded well to the concept. He named the group the Toastmasters Club; "toastmaster" was a popular term that referred to a person who gave toasts at banquets and other occasions.

The Forming of Toastmasters International

Smedley began working at the newly organized YMCA in Santa Ana, California, in 1922, and for the first two years, his time was spent building a home for the organization. However, his passion to help others learn to speak and lead remained. Once the new YMCA building was christened in April of 1924, he was able to introduce the idea of Toastmasters to his colleagues, and organize the Toastmasters club that eventually became Club No. 1 of Toastmasters International. The first meeting was held at the YMCA building on October 22, 1924. Word spread about Smedley's Toastmasters clubs and soon people in surrounding communities and other states were asking how they could start their own club.

Bookmark On the occasion of 92nd anniversary of Toastmasters International, District 97P is to issue attractive bookmarks to commemorate this special occasion.

Public Relations Manager DTM Busaba has created these bilingual bookmarks which include her own Thai quotes and cartoon drawings whilst TM Sirintorn, VPPR of PIM Toastmasters club was a graphic designer. The bookmarks are intended to help promote Toastmasters to the public’s attention. Also, they would make an ideal gift. District leaders would assist in distributing the bookmarks to potential members and target groups of people. These bookmarks shall be widely displayed in many bookstores, public canteens, university libraries and shall be available for all those people that are interested.

Chiang Mai Toastmasters Club

Chiang Mai Toastmasters Club was

failing and up for closure having previously been a very successful club over the past five years due to its falling membership.

It was about the same time that District Director DTM Thanoo decided to join as a member there as his third club membership. To try and save the club, he started with a change – the club’s former name from The First Northern Thailand Toastmasters to the new name of

Chiang Mai Toastmasters Club.

The situation was discussed amongst the few remaining charter members, Past President CTM/CL Ratana Hansen and District Director DTM Thanoo. First, they cut down their venue fee by sharing the same venue with Thai Lanna Speaking Club. Next, they requested Senior Leaders to attend the club meetings. Immediate Past District Director DTM Panomporn, Program Quality Director Thawesak, Club Quality Chair Apisara, Organizing Chair Nassara, Past Division Director Suwit had joined and had brighten the meeting atmospheres there. Then, they set up special events eg.Speech Marathon which enabled all its members to participate. Through this hard work, more new members have now started to join and the club is growing. Change, Cheers, Congratulations!

Empower Toastmasters Club

The first bilingual French & English Club

It was Area A2 Director CC Amélie Yan-Gouiffes

who wanted to charter a bilingual French and

English Toastmaster club in Bangkok, Thailand.

It was quite difficult for a busy working French lady to gather 20 members to charter a club.

However, with her confidence and strong belief that Toastmasters is one the vital solution to

enhance communication and leadership skills, she did it!

Area Director CC Amélie has always maintained that The Toastmasters recipe works with

every single person that joins learning and delivering “speech after speech, meeting after

meeting” where people grow and blossom,”

TM Tina Hirschbuehl, a member at Empower club told us one day that she and other members

enthusiastically pile into a meeting room at the Franco-Thai Chamber of Commerce near

Lumpini Park in Bangkok. Although many of them are French they’re not there to eat lunch,

instead there food is also thought and deed and the enhancement of communication. One

would surely say that there is food for thought on offer!

We are a diverse group of people, most of whom were new to toastmasters, who happily

sacrifice our lunch break to speak, laugh, and learn in the safe environment of each other’s

company. Speeches and evaluations are given in either English or French; it is up to the

speaker to choose the language they feel more comfortable in or want to practice.

Then Empower Toastmasters is the place for us.

Judge Training

Speech judges have an obligation to contestants,

Toastmasters International, audience, and

themselves. Good speech judges are accurate, fair,

trustworthy, knowledgeable, good listeners.

There were 63 members from various clubs joining the

First of all, let's congratulate our new clubs which officially chartered in September and before,(1) Danang, (2) Novartis (3) Thai FDA and (4) Bangkok Outliers.

The youngest CC

Miss Pawanrat Surapee is the youngest member of St. Theresa Toastmasters club whom acquired the ability to receive the CC award, especially as she is only twenty years old. Her inspiration came from a man that used to speak at the club who was also a student where she is now a member. His speeches truly inspired her with his excellent command of the English language. From his inspirational speeches, she not only became a member of Toastmasters but also a club officer. As a club officer, she faced many challenges and was faced with the situation of the club only having a few members whereby she and others became so disillusioned that they wanted to give up. To their rescue came District Director DTM Thanoo a loyal Toastmasters member who gave them all new ways and values in the achievement of their goals. From this the drive, new members started in haste and their hard work has achieved remarkable progress in new members joining.

Miss Pawanrat Surapee is delighted with all the progress and enjoys immensely coming to the club. She obviously has achieved her ambitions by having the confidence in believing in herself and that anything in life is possible. Congratulations to her!

Pathways – Revitalized Toastmasters Educational Program (1/2)

Introduction

In the July 2016 Toastmasters Magazine, the new, revitalized educational

program was introduced, laid out and detailed so all of us can begin to

understand the exciting and modernizing changes taking place in our

education program.

Looking to enhance and expand how we benefit from being a Toastmaster Pathways

will change what we do in our meetings and now, more so than before, what we do

outside our regular meetings. Soon we will have new paths to explore as we learn about

and improve the communication and leadership skills needed in the modern, business

world.

As Chief Ambassador, with a great team of Ambassadors to support this new effort,

soon we will be heading in a new and invigorating direction but at the same time, for the

next two years, one that will allow members to enjoy the current Toastmaster journey

from novice speaker to DTM so many of us know and have travelled.

Three Benefits

First, recognition, so important in what we do, will come earlier and more often in the educational journey.

Coming from a club that

recognizes members with a pin

on completion of their Ice

Breaker, a half CC Ribbon after

their fifth speech and assorted

pins to commemorate other

achievements, CC, ACB, ACS,

ACG, DTM, CL and AL, this

change, in itself, will motivate

members and improve member

retention.

Three Benefits

Second, with technology now so ubiquitous, everywhere in our day-to-day life, the new, on-line resources to improve speeches and to support meeting roles is long overdue.

I see a future in which all of

us, instead of reading click-

bait junk mail on Facebook,

will be browsing Toastmasters’

content to learn about,

prepare for and improve how

we complete our next speech

or undertake our next meeting

role.

Three Benefits

Third, stronger evaluation and mentoring components will become the norm.

For the past 18 years as a

Toastmaster in Thailand, I

have always believed clubs

grow quickly and stay strong

when evaluations are

meaningful and effective in

supporting our members in

clearly highlighting strengths

and weaknesses and by

offering concrete

recommendations and

suggestions for improvement.

Pathways – Revitalized Toastmasters Educational Program (2/2)

Skills Overview

In addition to Public Speaking, the new program will include Interpersonal

Communication, Leading and Managing, Leading Strategically and Building Confidence,

all areas needed into today’s competitive business world.

.Conclusion

Exciting times are ahead as the new program becomes available, understood and

implemented in our clubs. However, with any change, comes a very sharp learning

curve to challenge all our members, young and old, novice and experienced, in English

or the language of your choice that should invigorate individual members, enliven

meetings and strengthen clubs.

For all us, these changes will offer a chance to review skills we have, to determine

where we need to improve and to provide the means to do so.

Increased Skills

With an increase in

competencies from the

current 68 to more than

250 in the new Pathways,

there will be so much

more to learn and do. So

much in fact, I hope we

will be able to not only

retain our more

experienced members by

offering them new and

exciting challenges, but

also bring back so many

members who have

dropped out of our clubs

and who are sorely

missed.
