1 Fellow Lions, Lionesses, Leos and friends of District 14-B, The first thing that I want to say is that I feel truly honored to have been elected to serve as District Governor of District 14-B for the Lions Year 2018-2019. It has been a very interesting and busy two years leading up to this point. As I am writing this message, I am but a few days from traveling to Las Vegas to attend the 4 required days of training at the District Governor Elect Seminar that will, hopefully, help me to be the District Governor that you all expect and deserve. I am looking forward to this 102 nd Lions International Convention in Las Vegas, though I can’t say that I am looking forward to days of 106+ degree heat! During the next year, all our clubs should really try to get new members, and to keep the old ones. Lions International and District 14-B are nothing unless we have strong, active clubs and enthusiastic members. Likewise, your clubs will not thrive unless you, as club members, are actively engaged in service. We must not succumb to stagnation. We must constantly look for new opportunities to engage with our communities, which in turn, will renew our enthusiasm and attract new members. Remember, every single Lion is important. Every. Single. One. Do you and your other club members treat every Lion as important to your club? Every club has members that are very active and others that are seen less often, but that doesn’t make them less important. Every single member has different skills, abilities, and perspectives that bring life to a club. Those Lions who have less time to dedicate or whose schedules prevent them from being at meetings are no lesser Lions than the rest of us. In fact, busy people make GREAT Lions because they have a record of accomplishment. Don’t discount them just because they aren’t at each meeting, and don’t chase them away by ignoring them. Service will be at the core of the message I will bring to your clubs this year. The Multi-District Global Leadership, Membership and Service Team Coordinators have reviewed and endorsed an ambitious set of goals for this year. The action plans related to each of these goals focus on ways the district can support our clubs and help them grow and prosper. Incoming International President Gudrun Yngvadottir has a theme of “BEYOND THE HORIZON.” She says that the way to build on our already impressive legacy is to do what Lions have always done; get creative and reach within our communities, clubs and selves to discover a new level of service. I look forward to the challenges ahead and to working with you to help your clubs grow and prosper. Together, let us use this second year of the new century of Lionism to reinvigorate our clubs, re-energize our members, and re- commit to our motto, “We Serve.” District Governor Lion Kirby Marchand 655.3321 H District 14B ‘s Monthly Newsletter July 2018

Fellow Lions, Lionesses, Leos and friends of District 14-B,
The first thing that I want to say is that I feel truly honored to have been elected to serve
as District Governor of District 14-B for the Lions Year 2018-2019. It has been a very
interesting and busy two years leading up to this point. As I am writing this message,
I am but a few days from traveling to Las Vegas to attend the 4 required days of training
at the District Governor Elect Seminar that will, hopefully, help me to be the District
Governor that you all expect and deserve. I am looking forward to this 102nd Lions
International Convention in Las Vegas, though I can’t say that I am looking forward to
days of 106+ degree heat!
During the next year, all our clubs should really try to get new members, and to keep
the old ones. Lions International and District 14-B are nothing unless we have strong,
active clubs and enthusiastic members. Likewise, your clubs will not thrive unless
you, as club members, are actively engaged in service. We must not succumb to
stagnation. We must constantly look for new opportunities to engage with our communities, which in turn, will
renew our enthusiasm and attract new members.
Remember, every single Lion is important. Every. Single. One. Do you and your other club members treat
every Lion as important to your club? Every club has members that are very active and others that are seen less
often, but that doesn’t make them less important. Every single member has different skills, abilities, and
perspectives that bring life to a club. Those Lions who have less time to dedicate or whose schedules prevent
them from being at meetings are no lesser Lions than the rest of us. In fact, busy people make GREAT Lions
because they have a record of accomplishment. Don’t discount them just because they aren’t at each meeting,
and don’t chase them away by ignoring them.
Service will be at the core of the message I will bring to your clubs this year. The Multi-District Global
Leadership, Membership and Service Team Coordinators have reviewed and endorsed an ambitious set of goals
for this year. The action plans related to each of these goals focus on ways the district can support our clubs and
help them grow and prosper. Incoming International President Gudrun Yngvadottir has a theme of “BEYOND
THE HORIZON.” She says that the way to build on our already impressive legacy is to do what Lions have always
done; get creative and reach within our communities, clubs and selves to discover a new level of service.
I look forward to the challenges ahead and to working with you to help your clubs grow and prosper. Together, let
us use this second year of the new century of Lionism to reinvigorate our clubs, re-energize our members, and re-
commit to our motto, “We Serve.”

Replica of Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall
coming to McKeesport
The Wall that Heals, a traveling Vietnam Veterans Memorial replica and its mobile education center will be coming to McKeesport this summer.
Starting Aug. 9 and running through Aug. 12, the Wall replica will be on display for 24-hours a day at Jimmy Long Field in Renziehauzen Park in McKeesport.
Walt Yager, who has been working to get the Wall to come to McKeesport for the past several years, said he’s grateful that the city is one of 39 in the United States that will host the wall this year. He added he is looking to set up a website to raise funds to pay for the wall.
The Wall that Heals is the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund’s three-quarter scale replica of the Vietnam Memorial in Washington.
Just like the memorial in Washington, the traveling exhibit bears the names of the more than 58,000 service men and women who were casualties of the Vietnam War.
The tractor-trailer that carries the exhibit converts to an education center with information about the war, the memorial, photos of service members whose names are inscribed on the wall, and other information.
only stop in southwestern Pa. will be in McKeesport.
According to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial website, the replica wall is 375 feet long and stands 7 1/2 feet high at its tallest point. The Wall that Heals is made of a synthetic granite which enables visitors to do rubbings of individual soldiers’ names.
The mobile education center will provide additional information as well as photos of local service members as well a digital kiosk where visitors can search for names.
