LocationImperial’s location, in one of the world’s most important financial and cultural centres, is extremely advantageous. In fact, London was voted best student city in the UK, and 3rd in the world, in the QS Best Student Cities rankings 2017.

London’s dynamic startup scene is the biggest in Europe and continues to grow, making the capital one of the most innovative cities in the world. The capital’s burgeoning technology scene is rapidly producing companies with extraordinary growth potential. The main School building was designed by Foster + Partners, which reinforces this inspiring work environment.

There’s a reason people come from all over the world to visit London – and the city thrives on the diversity this brings. The streets are packed with restaurants, pubs, comedy and music venues, theatres, sporting arenas, historical and cultural attractions, and so much more.

More information on the practical aspects of living in the city can be found on the dedicated ‘Living in London’ section of our website.

ResearchThe Business School is committed to researching and implementing solutions to the most urgent challenges facing the world today – including climate change, global healthcare, financial stability, and the digital economy.

The Business School has three departments – Finance, Innovation & Entrepreneurship, and Management – along with a range of research centres: the Brevan Howard Centre for Financial Analysis, the Centre for Global Finance & Technology, the Centre for Climate Finance & Investment, and the Centre for Health Economics & Policy Innovation.

Together they generate cutting edge, high-impact research whilst simultaneously providing practical and innovative solutions to real world issues. Strong links with industry, commerce, healthcare and government put the School at the heart of policymaking and management strategy.

In the UK, the quality of research undertaken in Higher Education institutions is assessed rigorously at regular intervals. The latest assessment was the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2014. The REF outcomes are significant; they are measures of research quality and, therefore, have reputational impact and are used by Funding Councils to distribute grants for research.

This was the highest proportion achieved by any institution in the ‘business and management’ category, and improves on our 2008 result of 85 per cent.

Our research priorities are:To help societies move away from the carbon economy

To avert the next financial crisis

To accelerate social enterprise innovation and entrepreneurship

To improve healthcare systems worldwide

To more fully understand the role of China in the world’s businesses, economies and societies, and learn from its experience.

The Business School’s REF results were excellent, with 92 per cent rated as ‘world leading’ (4*) or ‘internationally excellent’ (3*).

Executive EducationExecutive Education at Imperial College Business School continues to be a growing field. Building upon Imperial’s resources, intellectual assets and networks, the programmes develop strategic leadership capabilities, typically in innovation-intensive science and engineering-based companies.

In September 2015, the School launched a new portfolio of 15 Open Programmes spanning the areas of Finance, Leadership, Innovation and Health. It also offers bespoke courses that align to the strategic objectives of individual clients.

The Business School’s Executive MBA offering was also redesigned to include an improved corporate framework and Executive Leadership Journey. The programme now features six half-days of thought leadership and coaching, and four ‘Industry Insights’ sessions held in partnership with Korn Ferry Hay Group, where participants are coached in the qualities and skills required of a senior executive.

2016 saw a further expansion with a move from face-to-face to blended programme delivery, in response to the changing business needs and challenges of our client-base. Our cross-disciplinary learning approach has seen increased collaboration with colleagues from Engineering, Science, Technology and Medicine, and we have continued to develop our Impact Lab, which is the cornerstone of our offering.

For more information about Executive Education at the Business School, please visit the website.

The Advisory BoardThe Business School’s Advisory Board, comprising high-level external representatives of business, provides strategic advice, champions the School, communicates its vision, and reviews performance against objectives.

For full details of our current Advisory Board, please visit the website.

Opportunities and challengesIn the near future, the Business School will build on its recent expansion and continue to grow both in size and international reputation. It will continue its upward trajectory by attracting and retaining top quality faculty, enhancing both its educational offering and student experience, increasing the volume and impact of research, and mobilising additional fundraising income.

The School has been a priority investment area for the College; a critical element supporting its ambition to continue to grow and secure further research, operational and philanthropic funds, and capital investment. Attracting additional top talent will be a major priority, as will the further exploitation of interdisciplinary collaborative opportunities across the College.
