The PosiTionFounded in 2005, Léman Manhattan serves children ages 16 months to 12th grade with an academically rigorous program and personalized approach to instruction in a nurturing, dynamic learning community.

A neighborhood school with a global outlook, Léman enrolls nearly 900 students across two campuses in New York City’s most historic area, The Financial District, and is just steps away from landmarks such as the New York Stock Exchange and Federal Hall. Léman is an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School offering the IB Diploma Programme, considered the gold standard in college preparatory curriculum.

Léman has experienced significant admissions demand being located in the fastest-growing residential neighborhood in Manhattan, as well as serving as New York City’s only boarding school. As a school entering its 14th academic year in 2018-19, Léman benefits from being an established school with a recognized academic program and positive word-of-mouth reputation in addition to the innovation and nimbleness of a relatively young school committed to continuous improvement.

The Léman approach to education is intentionally international, and it stands at the forefront of educational thinking and research. Learning at Léman is exceptionally personalized, and the unique strengths and skill sets of each child are uncovered and explored. The student body is diverse, with families hailing from more than 50 countries of origin, and the school is uniquely situated as one of the few ongoing schools in Lower Manhattan.

At this time, Léman seeks a Director of Admissions, whose primary function will be to drive enrollment growth across PreK through High School. The Director of Admissions is responsible for the development and execution of a student recruitment strategy from inquiry through enrollment, oversight of all admissions-related events, analysis and reporting of all enrollment activity, planning

MISSION

Léman Manhattan Preparatory School is an international learning community committed to educating, empowering and inspiring students from early childhood through 12th grade to be confident,

independent critical thinkers.

As an International Baccalaureate World School, Léman equips young minds with the knowledge and skills they need to evaluate, compare and make thoughtful choices so they can become informed and

engaged citizens of the world.

and disbursement of financial aid, and collaboration with administration, faculty, parents, and students to promote the Léman experience. The Director of Admissions is an integral part of the school’s senior leadership team, helping to lead strategic initiatives that help drive awareness for and interest in Léman’s program at key grade entry points.

The AcAdemic ProgrAmAs an International Baccalaureate World School, Léman delivers an academically rigorous program that prepares students for a global, interconnected future. The school’s inquiry-based approach to teaching and learning promotes intellectual, emotional, and social growth while emphasizing problem-solving, critical thinking, and higher-order reasoning.

Students are actively engaged in their own learning; they work with teachers to create Personal Learning Plans that are individually tailored to help them achieve measureable progress against academic goals and pursue their interests and passions through enrichment goals. Three times per year, student, teacher, and parents come together for conferences to discuss progress.

A globally-focused, personalized education begins in Léman’s Center for Early Childhood Education (16 months through Kindergarten), where students learn Mandarin or Spanish four times a week as they navigate new social settings and develop literacy, fine, and gross motor skills. Through purposeful play, students in Léman’s Early Childhood Center build a sense of belonging and community, as well as a love for coming to school each day. The Early Childhood Center was recently renovated to accommodate the growing demand for Léman’s program among downtown families with young children. In the past two years, enrollment in the Early Childhood Center has more than doubled.

Léman Manhattan’s Lower School (grades 1-5) is a vibrant, creative place, with a curriculum that focuses on educating the whole child and developing strong critical thinking skills. The division’s diverse curriculum encourages students to reach their academic, social, and emotional potential in a challenging yet supportive and nurturing environment that embraces family, community, and citizenship. Teachers emphasize proficiency in literacy, as well as facility with math, world languages, humanities, science, and physical education. The arts are a particularly strong aspect of the Lower School curriculum, with opportunities for student involvement in performing and the visual arts. Through Léman’s Signature “Strings Program,” each Léman student in Kindergarten through 3rd grade learns the violin.

Léman Manhattan’s Upper School (grades 6-12) provides students with an academically challenging program that prepares them for admission to competitive colleges and universities, and to be principled global citizens who approach the world with a sense of purpose. The High School offers the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, globally recognized as the most a dynamic, well-rounded, inquiry-based high school curriculum designed to challenge knowledge and equip students with skills needed to succeed in college and life.

Highly esteemed by top universities, the IB program is a key selling point of Léman for both local families and those relocating to New York from overseas. As NYC’s only boarding program, Léman enrolls approximately 100 residential students (roughly 25% of total high school student population). Hailing from across the U.S. and nearly 20 other countries, boarding students enrich the internationalism of the Léman community. Students live in modern student residences on Wall Street, and take full advantage of the tremendous cultural resources of New York through myriad activities coordinated by residential life staff.

sTudenT LifeNumerous opportunities exist for Léman students to engage in learning beyond the classroom, through the arts, athletics, and more. The arts are an integral part of each child’s education, and students are challenged to become critical thinkers as both artists and creators in music, theater, and the visual arts at every level. Student athletes compete in soccer, swimming, volleyball, track and field, basketball, and more, and all students are involved in various community service initiatives throughout the year. A sense of responsibility to the school community, surrounding community, and entire world pervades the school.

Léman’s High School provides international and domestic students with full-time and five-day boarding opportunities—the first school in New York City to do so. The benefits of the boarding program are bountiful: it culls together students from various parts of the world, enriching the school’s focus on global collaboration. Student housing is uniquely situated on Wall Street, just blocks from the High School. Residential life is rich and varied; students live, study, and play together, with frequent weekend activities that allow them to explore New York City through sports games, Broadway shows, cultural excursions, and museum visits.

PhysicAL cAmPusLéman Manhattan occupies two historic buildings in Lower Manhattan, right in the midst of the city’s financial center—an area of booming residential growth among families with young children. The Early Childhood Center and Lower School are housed in the former headquarters of Bank of America International, one block south of the New York Stock Exchange. The Upper School is located in the top floors of the former Cunard Shipping headquarters, with spectacular views overlooking New York Harbor and the Statue of Liberty. Both facilities have full gymnasiums, indoor pools, and cafeterias served by professional chefs. The facilities have been artfully redesigned as school buildings—the spaces are bright, clean, and open. The school has room to grow enrollment in the current two campuses, which will be the primary charge of the Director of Admissions.

oPPorTuniTies & chALLenges The new Director of Admissions will join an admissions and marketing team sharply focused on reaching the school’s ambitious enrollment goals. The Director of Admissions will not only adhere to clear admission criteria and work in collaboration with faculty and academic partners to review candidates, but largely focus on outreach, recruiting, and building strategic relationships to raise visibility for Léman.
