Picture Taking Tips

The most common mistake taking a digital photo is not knowing exactly when their camera actually takes a picture. Hold the shutter button halfway down to lock

in the auto focus and exposure. Press the shutter button the rest of the way

down to take the picture.

Fill the Frame: Come in tight to really fill the picture with your subject.

Most cameras offer two types of zoom

• Optical – causes lens to move. You only want to use optical zoom. Optical zoom is measured in 3x & up to 8x

• Digital - magnifies the existing view and may distort the image

Don’t Use Digital Zoom

Try different angles or lighting• Get closer to the floor• Stand on a chair or take a picture from a

higher angle

Try wide-angle, close-up, or extreme close-up

Try a Variety of Photos

Lots of images fit better in a vertical format.• Portraits often look better in vertical

Try taking pictures both directions and then decide later

Turn the Camera Sideways

File Types

In film, a view of a scene that is shot from a considerable distance

The subject appears in smaller scale – generally entire body is in the shot

Long Shot

Tightly frames a person or an object Display the most detail but do not

display a broader scene (background, etc.)

Close-Up

Rule states that an image should be imagined as divided into 9 equal parts

The subject is offset based on an imaginary grid

Place points of interest at the intersection of the lines to balance

The human eye is directed to one of the points more naturally than a center shot
