It’s the trail of data left behind by users on digital services.

Falls under the umbrella of Digital Citizenship

10 Things Students Need to Know• College admissions and employers read your online profiles.

• Teachers and parents see, read, and hear about what you do online.

• What it means to be a good digital citizen.

• Create a simple digital profile of yourself with non-specific details.

• Create separate accounts “professional vs. personal”. Increase privacy settings on all accounts, limit what you post on your personal accounts and share publicly all the great things you’re doing using your professional account.

10 Things Students Need to Know• Learn from others. Make informed decisions on what personal

material is appropriate to share publicly, and what is not.

• The internet is permanent. What you post or send never truly disappears.

• The Golden Rule: Don’t hide behind the veil of your computer screen. Would you say in person, what you’re thinking of posting online?

• Don’t be afraid of making mistakes, but do be careful. Don’t be too open or too trusting online.

Step 2: Manage your Social Footprint

Facebook, twitter, instagram, tumblr…

• Create a suitable profile name• Enable privacy settings • Facebook: Only “friend” family and close friends• THINK before you post.• Only post photos you’d share with your parents, teachers,

employers…• Keep your address and phone # private• Facebook: untag photos of you in other peoples posts• Leave a polite answering message on your cell phone

Step 3: Add to the Conversation• Collaborate with constructive posts on blogs and online

discussions.
