Rather than strike down the ordinance, the court reinterpreted it so that it no longer applies to such counseling. In its latest opinion in Bruni v. City of Pittsburgh, the 3rd Circuit wrote, “the Ordinance, as properly interpreted, does not extend to sidewalk counseling—or any other calm and peaceful one-on- one conversations….” Under the ordinance, no one may “knowingly congregate, patrol, picket or demonstrate in a zone extending 15 feet from any entrance to the hospital or health care facility” that the city designates. Health care facilities broadly and vaguely include any “establishment providing therapeutic, preventative, corrective, healing and health-building treatment services on an out-patient basis by physicians, dentists and other practitioners.” Nonetheless, the 3rd Circuit said this language does not and cannot apply to pro-life sidewalk counselors. https://www.lifenews.com/2019/10/18/court-rules-pittsburgh-cant-stop -pro-life-people-from-saving-babies-outside-abortion-clinic/ Mother Teresa Sister Released After 15 Months in Prison Without Trial for Facilitating Adoption After fifteen months in jail, Sister Concelia Baxla, a Mother Teresa Sister from Jharkhand, India, has been released on bail. She used to work in one of the order’s many orphanages. Last year, she was arrested on charges of human trafficking because one of the co-workers allegedly took money for facilitating an adoption. Those charges were subsequently dropped but Sr. Concelia remained imprisoned. While all others involved in the case were granted bail swiftly, Sr. Concelia’s appeal was rejected multiple times. “Nobody should be persecuted because of their faith. We are thankful that Sister Concelia has been granted bail after more than a year in prison pending trial. While others were released sooner, it seems that Sr. Concelia was punished for symbolic reasons due to her faith and her position as a member of the Missionaries of Charity,” said Tehmina Arora, Director of ADF India. A mob will arrive at a prayer meeting or Christian gathering, shout abuse and harassment, and beat up those in attendance including women and children. Our Lady of LeLeche is Elevated to National Shrine by US

Bishops

Bishop Felipe Estévez of St. Augustine, Florida announced October 11 that the Shrine of Our Lady of La Leche has been elevated to a national shrine by the U.S. bishops’ conference. The shrine is located at the Nombre de Dios Mission in St. Augustine, founded in 1587. It is America’s oldest Marian shrine. It is dedicated to the nursing Mother of God and is a site of pilgrimage particularly for those hoping to become pregnant or to have a safe delivery. www.ncregister.com/daily-news/our-lady-of-la-leche-is-elevated-to-national-shrine-by-us-bishops?_

Administration shifts family planning funds from Planned Parenthood to other providers

The White House says it has reallocated $34 million in federal funds given up by Planned Parenthood and other providers that did not want to comply with new abortion restrictions on a federal family planning program. The money will instead go to 50 grantees that decided to remain in the Title X family planning grant program, which funds birth control and other reproductive health services for millions of low-income women and men. The Department of Health and Human Services said Monday reallocating the money would help fill “service gaps left by the grantees that chose to leave the Title X program rather than comply with the law.” The funding was awarded to grantees in Alabama, Arkansas, Delaware, Florida, Idaho, Pennsylvania, and other states. https://thehill.com/policy/healthcare/463725-trump-administration-reallocates-family-planning-funding-from-planned

PROPER BURIALS

The House has introduced a bill that would require burial or cremation of the remains of unborn children after abortions. The chief sponsor of the legislation is Rep. Jackie Walorski, representing South Bend, Indiana, the city where the late Ulrich Klopfer ran an abortion facility for decades. In September, police discovered the remains of 2,245 unborn children in Klopfer's house and another 165 in the trunk of his car. Unfortunately the bill is not expected to pass the Senate. https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/policy/healthcare/south-bend-republican-introduces-fetal-burial-bill-following-discovery-that-abortion-doctor-hoarded-remains

RELIGIOUS FREEDOM

The Kentucky Supreme Court ruled 6-0 that a print shop owner does not have to print messages that violate his deeply-held religious beliefs. In 2012, Blaine Adamson politely declined a request to print shirts for the Lexington

Gay Pride Festival, and referred the Gay and Lesbian Services Organization to another printer willing to print the shirts. The GLSO filed a complaint against Adamson's business.

Major Media Coverage Normalizes Polyamory

CBSN, the digital streaming arm of CBS News, aired an hour-long special on “consensual non-monogamy” Sunday night. The network also lamented the “legal hurdles in non-monogamous relationships.” But CBS isn't an aberration. ABC News, The Daily Beast, and The New York Times have all recently promoted polyamory or openly non-monogamous relationships. The Times in August published a feature piece titled “Polyamory Works for Them,” describing monogamy as “a curious stalwart” and that more and more young people are rejecting its “blandness.” ABC News delved into actor Nico Tortorella’s polyamorous lifestyle in an Oct. 24 article that said the actor’s open marriage is “redefining what it means to be ‘husband and wife.’” https://www.dailysignal.com/2019/10/29/major-media-coverage-normalizes-polyamory/

Groups call for end to use of aborted fetal tissue in animal research

A collection of pro-life groups Oct. 22 called for an end to the use of aborted fetal tissue in animal research. Although the current administration banned the practice in June for federal research at the National Institutes of Health, the group White Coat Waste Project said research continues in 31 different states with research dates not expiring until 2023 or even later, with some projects having open-ended deadlines. Anthony Bellotti, president and founder of the White Coat Waste Project, said the trade in aborted fetal tissue supports a $100-million-a-year industry. “If you’re an animal lover, you’re opposed to this. If you’re pro-life or pro-choice, you’re opposed to this. If you’re Republican or Democrat, you’re opposed to this,” he added. http://catholicphilly.com/2019/10/news/national-news/groups-call-for-end-to-use-of-aborted-fetal-tissue-in-animal-research/?mc_cid=fde6efed0c&mc_eid=e63415b1b8
