ewer bedrooms (and at the same time ar morerooms) Te biggest ldquobedroomrdquo is used primarilyas our living room though about one-third othe room is our ldquogaragerdquo occupied by the storagebins where we keep our random stuff And theldquoStuberdquo which we believe was intended to bethe living roomdining roomkitchen has akitchen a dining area a bike storage zone andmy workshop Our little apartment has gone through quitea ew different arrangements When we firstmoved in we put our uton against the outer wallo the living room with our huge bookcase rightacross rom it Claustrophobic especially whenthe uton was unolded So we took all the books

off and moved the bookcase to create a dividerbetween the living room and the garage At thetime our computer was on a lower bookcase inthe Stube and Dustin and I slept in the medium-sized bedroom Fionarsquos was the loveliest room(well when it was clean) and also the first onethat was completely put together We set it up theday we moved in while Fiona was at our branchpresidentrsquos house playing She knew immediatelythat it was just or her Later we decided that a lof bed would becool So we disassembled our regular bed and putit in the garage then put together a lof bed in

our bedroom Now we had the perect place oran office Te low bookcase and computer movedinto our room and we ound a little table or mynew workshop Just recently we realized that it would bebetter or Fiona to have the big bedroom So

we disassembled the lof bed (with the kindassistance o our riend Jensen Clifford) andmade the switch Fiona has had some troublesleeping in her new room because shersquos not usedto being in such a big place by hersel

Our apartment is cozy Although wesometimes wish or more space (as well as a

dishwasher and washing machine) we are veryhappy to have such a nice little apartment and

which we could then quote in our essay Iremember one particular exam on a book I hadnrsquotread I woke up the morning o the exam flippedthrough the book and ound a page that soundedlike it could be useul in the exam and typed it upand printed it out I aced the exam My blue book

was filled with praise rom the proessor on thestrength o my essay All on a book I never even

read A year later I had another course a gen edcourse on American history I studied or thoseexams in much the same way cracked open thetextbook or 983091983088 minutes the morning o the examthen aced every test While I like to think that Irsquom smart and adecent student Irsquom not that amazing Ratherthe coursework just wasnrsquot so rigorous that itrequired more effort And I spent over 983076983089983088983088983088or each o those classes983089983091 where my greatest

takeaway was the deficiency o Americarsquos systemo higher education Had I gone to the library andborrowed a bookmdashor reemdashand read it I likely

would have learned more Te researchers behind the book I mentionabove Richard Arum o New York Universityand Josipa Roksa o the University o Virginiablame these results in part on ldquoa culture atcolleges and universities that values researchover good teachingrdquo983089983092 My personal experience atthe U substantiates this as well Except it wasnrsquotjust research valued over good teachingmdashit waseverything but good teaching that was valued

more highly the research the medical centerthe business er research park and especiallyathletics most o all the ootball team o UrbanMeyer and Alex Smith that went undeeated mysophomore year We mere students were third-class citizens at our own university bottom-dwelling scum suckers because we were a drainonmdashrather than contributing tomdashthe universityrsquosrevenue Or so it elt

kitchen however there were still a ew emptyshelves so they were orced to admit that theremight be a ew items missing Afer breakast Mrs Hibdon asked herdaughter Susan to carry the remaining boxesupstairs When this was done she pointed outa sink ull o soapy water and asked ldquoNow will

you please start on the wallsrdquo Te blank look onSusanrsquos ace must have indicated her mystificationat this request so Mrs Hibdon clarified it withldquoYou can tell how dusty they arerdquo ldquoYou want me to wash the wallsrdquo ldquoYes thatrsquos rightrdquo

with it a surprise that in retrospect seemed tofit in perectly with Mrs Hibdonrsquos patterns oderangement During the next ew minutes while Susan

was intent on her dust removal Mrs Hibdonset out to put all those important items (whoseidentity was as yet unknown) in the newlyspotless cabinets Te Hibdon children had long

since learned to block out all but the one mostpressing oolishness o their motherrsquos so Susantried not to observe her activities too closelyTis was o course impossible when Mr Hibdonentered the room and said in shock ldquoMary whatare you doingrdquo Mrs Hibdon replied in equal shock ldquoIrsquomputting this stuff away What does it look like Irsquomdoingrdquo Mr Hibdon recovered quickly rom hisinitial state o stupeaction and was now tryingto calmly sort through the boxes on the floor toestablish just what ldquothis stuffrdquo might be Susan

turned and surveying the scene attemptedto contain a wild giggle Picking up an oldcoffeepot Mr Hibdon inquired ldquowhen were

you thinking we might use this Tey donrsquot evenmake filters to fit this thing any morerdquo ldquoO course they do Tey make everything

you could ever want to buy we just donrsquot know where to find them Why would we keep thataround i it was useless Besides wersquove had it or

years We canrsquot throw it awayrdquo ldquoYes dear And what about thisrdquo ldquoWhat about itrdquo

ldquoWhy donrsquot we throw it awayrdquo ldquoTrow it away We canrsquot throw that awayLook at it itrsquos beautiulrdquo ldquoOh yoursquore right What is itrdquo Tere were several seconds o oppressivesilence while the three pondered the object inMr Hibdonrsquos hands ldquoI think itrsquos a shortbreadmoldrdquo offered Susan ldquoHey yeah I think yoursquore right See wecanrsquot throw that away itrsquos part o our Scottishheritagerdquo Mrs Hibdon said With a laugh (cleverly disguised as a cough)Mr Hibdon said ldquoMary it would take tworecipes o shortbread to fill this thing and you

would only get six pieces out o itrdquo Mrs Hibdon trying to sidestep reality saidfirmly ldquoDavid we are not throwing that away

We will need it someday and then where will weberdquo ldquoIn an uncluttered kitchenrdquo attemptedSusan Mr Hibdon laughed until he saw his wietrying not to do the same ldquoOkay why donrsquot we

put all o this in the garagerdquo(Te amily garage was filled withurniture that Mrs Hibdon said she was going torefinish but never actually did Tus came aboutthe term ldquogarage-ingrdquo which the young Hibdonsdefined as ldquothe disappearance o any purposeulhousehold itemrdquo) ldquoGood idea Susanrdquo ldquoNo we canrsquot put it out thererdquo ldquoWHY NOrdquo exclaimed Mr Hibdon whohad already picked up one o the boxes and wason his way out the door ldquoBecause itrsquos cold out thererdquo declared Mrs

Hibdon ldquoI mean i we ever want any o that wersquoll have to stand in the cold and sort througheverythingrdquo ldquoWhat are you talking about Wersquove alreadyestablished that WE ARE NEVER GOINGO USE ANY OF HISrdquo cried Susan inexasperation ldquoBesides therersquos no room in the garagerdquo ldquoOh thatrsquos right Te garage is ull becausethatrsquos where we put the things that are practicallike doors and chairsrdquo Susan recalled ldquoRightrdquo At that moment something caught Susanrsquos

eye ldquoA waffle iron How did that get in that boxrdquo ldquoOh that goes in the cupboard with thespice rack Will you put it awayrdquo ldquoWhatrsquos this waffle doing in itrdquo Mrs Hibdon poked it and said ldquoHmm

when was the last time we had wafflesrdquo Susanrsquos curiosity got the better o her andshe inquired ldquoIs it in the crusty stage o staleor has it gone through the complete cycle so itrsquosspongy againrdquo All o the Hibdons knew aboutthe staleness cycle known as the ldquoArchwayGinger Snap Effectrdquo so named because Mr



Hibdon bought a bag o Archway Ginger Snapsabout every six months He always insisted thathe loved them but or some reason only aboutour o the cookies were actually eaten Everytwo weeks one o the children took out a cookieto run tests on it and it was ound that staleness

was not a continuum (as is generally assumedby the public) but a cycle that runs rom a hardcrusty state (when most people throw whatever it

is away) to a pseudo-normal squishy state ldquoBoy is this thing old David will you throwthis awayrdquo requested his wie tossing it to himldquoWait a minute Susan you canrsquot put that thererdquo ldquoWhy not Tis is the cabinet with the spicerackrdquo ldquoI know but that has to go on the shel withthe crock pot and the ondue pot so therersquos roomon the top shel or these ashtraysrdquo With great effort Susan resisted the urge toslap some sense into her mother since she knewit would never work anyway She was suddenlyaced with three absolutely ridiculous acts One

that somehow she was supposed to cram a waffleiron onto a shel that was already crowded with acrock pot and a ondue pot two that they evenowned a ondue pot and three that she wasmaking room or ashtrays ldquoAshtrays What do we need ashtrays orrdquo ldquoHey Back in the sixties we used to knowpeople who smokedrdquo ldquoRight Te key words here are lsquoback in thesixtiesrsquo when Johnson was president people

o the things people argue a lot about is the best way to be a parent I did some brie researchonline to see how people talk about some othese parenting trends Here are some trends youmight have heard about recently in the news

guess those are people who sacrifice a lotor their childrenmdashwhich would probablydescribe a lot o people

comes to taking care o their kids Icirc We have ldquoWalmart momsrdquo According to

what I read those are apparently mothers who are more concerned about amilyfinances than national finances I know thatI am

was an actual book title) Again we do live in a world where peopleare conused Tere are so many trends out thereBut or us as members o Te Church o Jesus

Christ o Latter-day Saints what trend are we toollow in raising our own children I think a verygood explanation o that ldquotrendrdquo was given by theLord Jesus Christ himsel through the Prophet

And again inasmuch as parents havechildren in Zion or in any o her stakes

We begin teaching our children the gospelo Jesus Christ by internalizing it ourselvesby obeying the commandments and the firstprinciples and ordinances o the gospel Tatrsquos

where we start I want to take a moment to talk about what

has worked in our amily in terms o teaching ourown daughter the gospel o Jesus Christ I thinkthese things will sound pretty amiliar to you

Icirc We really try to pray daily as a amily bothin the morning and the evening

Icirc We try to say blessings at mealtimesmdashatevery mealtime

Icirc As a amily we try to have daily scripture

study Now Fiona is not yet three yearsold983093 But we still read the Book o Mormon

with her We read with her six verses a day Ihavenrsquot calculated how long itrsquos going to take

us to get through the Book o Mormon butitrsquos probably somewhere over hal a decadeBut we do it983094

Icirc We hold family home evening We try todo it on Mondays as wersquove been instructedby Church leaders But you know what Itdoesnrsquot always work out on Monday Anditrsquos pretty amazing how ofen things comeup on Monday eveningsmdashthings which takeme or Susan away rom home and make itimpossible to have amily home evening onMonday So we just try to have it one day a

week whatever day o the week works And

again Fionarsquos not even three years old A loto times itrsquos as short as five or ten minutesBut we try to have it

Tatrsquos where it all starts Itrsquos the things that ourChurch leaders have instructed us to do or a verylong time I want to take a moment and tell you that



the Holy Ghost testiy to us that this Church istrue and that Jesus Christ is our Savior I we havehad the Holy Ghost testiy to us that these thingsare true then we need to share that testimony

with our children I still remember vividly the very first timeI ever shared that testimony with Fiona Hereis a photo o me holding Fiona or the very firsttime Tis is at almost 983090983088983088 in the morning on983089983093 July 983090983088983089983088 She had been born at 983089983092983088 thatmorningmdashalready keeping us up in the middleo the night Susan had held her and then Fionahad been bathed Ten it was my turn to holdher or the very first time Te first thing I did

was I introduced mysel as her ather Ten I toldher that her mother and I had been married bythe priesthood authority in the temple and thatbecause we had been married in the temple bythe right authority she had been born into aneternal amily I promised her that we would doeverything we could to make sure she was oursorever

Doing everything we can simply meansupholding the covenants that we made at baptismand that we renewed today by partaking o thesacrament As I mentioned in a talk that I gave a ewmonths ago here when we are baptized there area ew things we covenant to do Tose covenants

we make can be summarized very simply wecovenant to provide or each otherrsquos spiritualand temporal needs as members o the Churchand we covenant to teach each other the gospelo Jesus Christ And when you think about it

when it comes down to it thatrsquos the same thing

expected o us as parents in this Church weare to take care o our childrenrsquos spiritual andtemporal needs and teach them the gospel o

Jesus Christ By doing so all o us can uphold ourbaptismal covenants to ollow our Savior and hiscommandments In closing I leave my testimony with youthat I know that God is real I know that JesusChrist is his Son and that he is our Savior Iknow that this is Jesus Christrsquos Church upon theearth As we ollow the scriptures and the livingprophets and apostles that we have today we willbe able to raise children who are strong and who

Jesus Christ and the commandments that he hasgiven Sometimes our children despite our bestefforts will choose a different path And i that

happens all we can do is love them and we haveto love them And thatrsquos it But there were some people whose childrenhad allen away rom the Church who would

whisper to me ldquoWell when it came to religion we sort o just let them choose their own pathrdquoI really wondered about that because I reallyeel strongly about our own individual ability tochoose Irsquom grateul that Irsquove had the ability tochoose in my own lie and that I can choose thepath that I want to ollow Now this is the paththat Irsquove chosen to ollowmdashto stay close to theChurch But what about my own daughter Can I

just let her do whatever she wants to do In this context Elder Jeffrey R Holland othe Quorum o the welve said something in thislast general conerence983095 that really stuck out tome that I think contrasts with the conusion yousee in the world particularly when it comes toaith and religion He said
