Warmest greetings from Dexion!

As I reflect on 2016, there are many things to be positive about; within the engineering function we continue to persistently innovate, the Dexion Design Program (DDP) team have recently released the ‘7th Sprint’ since June 16 which bring along significant efficiency upgrades; with deliveries and quality, we have progressed well with continuous improvements positively coming through. Hiew has many years of experience delivering Auto Shuttle systems.

TIPS, TRICKS & TECHNIQUES

Since the launch of Dexion Auto Shuttle in July, the team has had the opportunity to design and install Auto Shuttle projects around the region. It has been a learning experience for all.

We get hands-on, practical and very useful tips shared by Hiew Sak Ching, Service Manager who has been with Dexion for 20 years. Hiew’s role is to create and manage after-sales service business, supporting product commissioning and rectifications required at sites.

As someone who has had a lot of experiences with Auto Shuttles, he shares key touch points for Supply Centres to ensure the whole process from design, installation, and live operations go seamlessly;

Dexion Recovery Vehicle (DRV). The importance of a clean warehouse for smooth and efficient operations.

If you have any questions or clarifications about the Auto Shuttle, drop us a line at [email protected]

w Isolate broken pallets and improper packing goods from the Auto Shuttle System.

w Schedule a set time for Users to charge the batteries (e.g. 8 hours or during shift change) and not leave it without use for a long time.

It is recommended that Supply Centres communicate the following tips to Customers and Users to prolong the life span of the Auto Shuttle and optimise each unit’s productivity and ROI.

w Establish Auto Shuttle Standard Operating Procedures or SOPs for the User right from the start, to maximize the output and eliminate User error.

w Maintain cleanliness at racking systems, Auto Shuttles and charging stations. A messy and hazardous environment will create track safe error and interrupt operations.

TIPS FOR SUPPLY CENTRES

Be sure your supervisors have the knowledge and skills to implement

installations with their teams. Dexion provides operational and maintenance training, and Supply Centres are expected to provide technical, on-ground support during installation.

Successfully test the application for Auto Shuttles with actual goods

and pallets before putting any order confirmation or work implementation. Supply Centres can arrange for Dexion team to set up the testing methodology at the customer’s site.

Do not alter or change specified pallet and storage goods

specifications during commissioning, once the rack and shuttle specifications have been confirmed. Complete assembly drawings must be established and used as a guide to ensure there are no faults with the manufacturing drawings.

Include the Tyne Pocket as a safety feature to secure the Auto Shuttle

on the forklift and prevent it from falling off when transfering the Auto Shuttle at the racking system.

Include the Dexion Recovery Vehicle (DRV) in sales proposals

for new sites. This is a HSE compliance equipment to obtain work-at-height permit.

Aim to build it right the first time, hand over in a proper manner to

Customers and follow up with good after-sales support.

Lim Chern Kuang, known by most as CK, joined Dexion on 1 December 2015 as the Head of Engineering.

Previously from the Meinhardt Group where he was the Technical Director, CK balances work with his passion for art, spending his weekends perfecting his craft in watercolour painting. He has candidly confessed that if he were not in Engineering, he would be a full time artist. Perhaps art and engineering have something in common, where both require full attention to detail. CK leads a team of 2 engineers to support structural engineering related services and support to the Group.

We catch up with CK on what the role entails and what are the changes taking place since he came on board.

How would you describe your time in Dexion far. It’s been excellent! The way engineering is structured at Dexion is quite different – we provide one stop engineering service to the Group, since our scope is to design, fabricate, and install our

DEXION PEOPLE

racks. Dexion does a lot of testing for our products, including lab test at universities as well as house lab tests. We develop our own software for others to use.

Why is engineering support important to the business?Racking is something very special in the engineering field. Most structures in structural engineering have a huge size to carry a limited load. Racking is special in the sense that it has the least selfweight to carry a huge load.

For example, for a bridge, the selfweight is three four times heavier than the vehical weight it can carry. Similarly, for high-rise buildings, the selfweight of the building is a few time heavier than the load it can carry.

This is actually quite common when we look at the nature. A healthy human can easily carry something that’s half his own body weight – similar for animals like horses, cows or elephants.

But did you know that Dexion racks can carry a weightload at least 100 times its own? In structural engineering, this is

amazing. Can you think of anything else that can beat our racks?

So what are priorities that your team is looking into? We’re looking to optimise our Engineering Designs, without compromising on standards around product safety. Our focus is aligned to our centralised Technical Services team, which is to deliver intuitive, fully featured Design Tools and excellent System Solutions that add significant value to our customers.

In your opinion, what are 3 most important traits that a leader should have to lead their team well?In order to have the respect and buy in from the team, a leader should have the knowledge and expertise in their area of specialisation, be generous with sharing that knowledge with their team mates, and have a clear direction of where they want to lead the team.

What are principles you live by when it comes to work? It’s what we prioritise in our organisation; come to office safe and go home safe!
