Inclusion of aviation in the EU ETS

Since the start of 2012, emissions from international aviation were included in the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS).

Estimated total cost of EU ETS for airlines (2012-2020): €17.7 billions

Based on Total volume enroute traffic generated and fuel burn

Monitoring and reporting their emissions index on an annual basis

THE SENATE OF THE UNITED STATES:

“The Secretary of Transportation shall prohibit an operator of a civil

aircraft of the United States from

participating in any emissions trading scheme

unilaterally established by the EU”

JOINT RUSSIA-CHINA STATEMENT

“We oppose any unilateral and coercive decisions that were

made without any agreements among the countries

concerned.”

• The inefficiencies in the current fragmented system are estimated to cost the airspace users €5 billion annually.

“By 2050, passengers and freight should enjoy efficient and seamless travel services, based on a resilient air transport system thoroughly integrated with other

transport modes and well connected to the rest of the world.”

Siim Kallas, Vice-President of the EC and Commissioner for Transport

Single European Sky ATM Research

• 1.4 billion passengers pass through annualy

• > than 440 airports

• 27,000 controlled flights daily

North European Air Navigation Service Providers

The key targets are:

• increase the cost-efficiency of Air Navigation Service (ANS) operations by 30% by 2020

• increasing the quality of service to the airspace users• decrease safety-critical ATM-induced incidents per year

• increase capacity in the region to support predicted traffic growth

• reduce amount of emissions related to ATM inefficiencies to 1% by 2020

(Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Ireland, Sweden)

Implementation schedule:Start date: October 2009End date: December 2012

Accumulated loss of €4.1 billionn since the 2008/09 crisis

The passenger load factor improved by 1.7% to 79.1%

A total of 370 million passengers were transported, of which 278 million travelled on European services and 92 million outbound

Compared to 2011, an additional 8.7 million passengers chose AEA member airlines

Despite a reasonable passenger traffic growth of around 3%, AEA recorded consolidated operating loss for 2012 of €1.3

billion.
