Elisha Womelsdorf is a new employee at the shelter. She has been a volunteer dog walker in the past and adopted a pet from ACARF.

Welcome!

Thank you! Larry Macha donated a power washer to the shelter. This is a big help to the techs who clean every day, and wonderful for the dogs, as it allows a much more thor-ough cleaning of the cages.

Among many other things, Spring means the arrival of lots of kittens, and the shelter has several litters. Although not quite ready for adoption, applications can be taken now and the kittens can go home with their new families when they are old enough. Come choose yours!

It’s Spring!

Dog Walkers Needed!

A very quick way to make a BFF is to treat a shelter dog to a walk! Although when they’re in their cages they’re safe from harm and are well fed, they long for the free-dom of the outdoors and the opportunity to get some needed exercise. And regu-

lar exercise greatly increases their chances for being adopted, as their social skills are enhanced with every kind and compassionate human interaction. The shelter relies heavily on volunteers to help with this re-warding task. Do you have some time to spare?

Stray’s Prayer  Dear God, please send me somebody who’ll care! I’m tired of running, I’m sick with despair. My body is aching, it’s so racked with pain, And Dear God I pray, as I run in the rain, That someone will love me and give me a home, A warm cozy bed and a big juicy bone.  My last owner tied me all day in the yard Sometimes with no water, and, God, that was hard. So I chewed my leash, and God I ran away To rummage in garbage and live as a stray. But now, God, I’m tired and hungry and cold, And I’m so afraid that I’ll never grow old.  They’ve chased me with sticks and hit me with stones, While I run the streets just looking for bones! I’m not really bad, God, please help if you can, Or I have become just a “Victim of Man!” I’m wormy, Dear God, and I’m ridden with fleas, And all that I want is an Owner to please!  If you find one for me, God, I’ll try to be good, And I won’t chew their shoes and I’ll do as I should. I’ll love them, protect them, and try to obey… When they tell me to sit, to lie down or to stay! I don’t think I’ll make it too long on my own, ‘Cause I’m getting so weak and I’m so all alone.  Each night as I sleep in the bushes I cry, ‘Cause I’m so afraid, God, that I’m gonna die. And I’ve got so much love and devotion to give, That I should be given a new chance to Live! So, Dear God, please answer my prayer, And send me someone who will REALLY care.  That is, Dear God, if YOU’RE REALLY there!

Thanks to

Ginny Hawk Fran Clay

Dawn Murray Judy Laver

Sandy Thompson Larry Macha

for all their work on Saturday, April 28, at the auction near Bronson. It resulted in an addi-tional $420 to help support the shelter. This auction was a “first” in a couple of ways—it was the first time the trailer had been so far away from Iola—Larry pulled it to and fro—and it was the first time the Trailer Queen (a/k/a Jeanne Cloud) had not been there! But her OTJ training ef-forts paid off; all went smoothly under Ginny’s direction. Thanks to Jack Franklin for in-viting us; many thanks to our Sweet Bakers for the pies:

Happy May Day

The Second Chance has had quite a wonderful dilemma lately—not enough space! There have been so many do-nations—many of them sea-sonal or holiday-related—that adequate storage space could not be found! And this didn’t include space for logging and marking donations. As a result, many donations were kept in various locations, making it dif-ficult to know what exactly was on hand and what should be on the floor for sale. Options were sought but all dis-carded as being too expensive or impractical. But Larry offered the perfect solution in one of his buildings with everything needed (especially space!) to perform all the necessary back room tasks of the store, as well as being able to store larger pieces of furniture we haven’t been able to accept.

Thanks again, Larry! We’re so grateful!

Macha to the Rescue! Again.

Thank you to Kelly Rouse and Kylee McKarnin for helping move some heavy stuff for us last week at the Second Chance. The old and feeble greatly appreciate the assistance!

Pet of the Week

Anya

Sweet little Anya came to us as a tiny and unusually calm little girl. Although she has grown, Anya has kept her loving nature. This is a beautiful puppy who will be an outstanding adult dog. Anya would be a wonderful pet for any family.
