DESERTEC

Why is it neccessary not to forget the European part of the DESERTEC project?

„...desert power can supply around two-thirds of the region’s [MENA] rising energy demand, whilst still leaving enough electricity for export, meeting 15 percent of European consumption.“ Flyer DESERTEC Foundation

„The diversification of the assets portfolio…has been completely ignored in the energy sector.” Whitebook DESERTEC

Europe‘s Energy Demand

• The EU-25 Energy Demand in 2005 was 3200 TWh/a

Population of 500 million people (2012)

Will increase to 600 million by 2050

• Energy Demand will rise to 4000 TWh/a by 2050

Hydropower

• Today EU-27 produces 360 TWh/a from hydropower

• The technical potential is about 1200 TWh/a

• Including global warming: potential decreases to 1080 TWh/a

Biogas

19.04.2012 FH Aachen University of Applied Sciences 8

• Theoretical potential is 1950 TWh

• The target of 500 TWh (1TWH per 1

million people) more likely achievable

• 250 000 km² agricultural land is

needed

Biogas

Advantage:

Storage capability

Disadvantage:

Usage of agricultural land

Wind Power

• Potential:

Offshore: 3400 TWh/a

Onshore: 27000 TWh/a

Wind Power could close the gap

Geothermal Power

• Energy Production in EU-27: 5.3 TWh/a

6.8 TWh/a (including Iceland)

• Potential between 25 – 50 TWh/a

Photovoltaic

• To cover the current electricity need a surface of 26000 km² must be used

Like the windenergy the PV-technology is a energy that can close the gap

Iceland and Norway

• At the moment both countries are not in the European Union

• Later connection to Iceland is integrated in the plans for DESERTEC

Iceland and Norway would be electricity exporters!

Conclusion

• DESERTEC is a project to solve upcoming and existing problems in the MENA region

• 15% of the electricity is imported to Europe

• Europe‘s future energy mix will mainly consist of biogas, hydro and wind energy.

• It is up to political leaders of the EU to start DESERTEC!
