Introduction: Your Million-Dollar

Moneymaking Machine

millions of dollars. It’s not some fancy supercomputer or the latest in nano-technology. Before I

tell you what it is, let me ask you something….

Have you ever investigated how to make money online? If you are reading this, then chances are

that you have. You’ve probably come across terms like “af!liate marketing”, “CPA offers”, or

“drop shipping”. Without going into all the details, each of these techniques can very well pro-

vide a passive-income stream if done correctly.

You don’t actually own any of the products, but you get a percentage of sales or referrals.

The problem is lack of control. IF YOU DON’T OWN THE PRODUCT, YOU DON’T OWN

THE BUSINESS! What happens if a company goes under or decides to slash commissions?

Conversely, if you DO own the product, you DO control what happens to YOUR business.

Having said that, let me tell you about your million-dollar moneymaking machine.

The most important and valuable piece of equipment is right between your ears. It is the hu-

man brain. Your thoughts are !red as electrical impulses among countless neurons and synapses.

Understanding your thoughts and how you process information is your ticket to living the lifestyle

you desire. Your thoughts can launch you into success or keep you bound to mediocrity.

No matter what, you cannot reach your goals if you don’t get started. Thoughts and habits can be

corrected, but none of that matters if you don’t take the !rst step.

The most important aspect of getting started is making time for the things you want to do. While I

was creating this product, I visited my family whose members were spread out over South Carolina

and Georgia. I’m only able to do this once a year or every other year. While there, I had to balance

the time spent with them verses staying on track and working on my Internet business. In one in-

stance, I was in an area with no Internet access for a week. In another instance, I had access to cable

modem, but I hardly had the time to use it because of different family events going on every day. As

an introvert, this was mentally draining.

My visit with them was so time consuming that I didn’t achieve very much. It wasn’t until I de-

cided to set some time for myself at the local library, that I was able to get anything done. Why

didn’t I think of that sooner?

I had to ask myself some hard questions. What is the dream that is so powerful it’s worth putting

my heart and soul into it? What is my vision and is it worth !ghting for?

When will I !nally love myself enough to go after what I crave?

I couldn’t move ahead until the misery of the known eclipsed my fear of the unknown. I discov-

ered my big “Why?” That is, I asked myself “Why am I building my business instead of working

for someone else?”

I was giving the best and most creative time of my day over to my job. I woke up feeling like I

didn’t get any sleep. I felt like my vigor for life was being squeezed out of me. No matter what, I

could not get excited about life. I was not involved or actively engaged in it; I was merely an apa-

thetic observer. Even worse, every day I had the power to act or do something to change my life,

but I let the expectations of other people run my life.

My million-dollar thought process was wasting away.

Many people would envy my job as a marine scientist, but my heart was just not in it. My

“Why?” can be summed up in an excerpt from Robert Kiyosaki’s book Rich Dad, Poor Dad.

I don’t want to work all my life. I don’t want what my parents aspired for-which was

job security and a house in the suburbs. I don’t like being an employee. I want to be

free to travel the world and live in a lifestyle I love. I want to be young when I do

this. I want to simply be free. I want control over my time and my life. I want money

to work for me. Robert Kiyosaki, Rich Dad Poor Dad

So, making time and being mindful of your time will play a big role in your success.

If you don’t respect your time, no one else will.

My desire is for you, the reader, is to help you overcome the limiting beliefs and habits that kill

your dreams. Whether you’re reading my ebook or listening to me on audio, understand that the

purpose here is to break the information down into its most basic components so that you can get

started. A lot of products tell you what you should be doing, but not actually how to do it.

I am the Get-Started Expert. I help get you up and running! That’s what I do!

I don’t overwhelm you with terms like RSS, search-engine optimization, and video marketing,

although those things are important. I tell you in straight-forward language how to get yourself up

and running.

“If you don’t design your own life plan, chances are you’ll fall into someone

else’s plan. And guess what they have planned for you? Not much.”

— Jim Rohn

Chapter I. Barriers to

Getting Started

Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things

that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do.

Mark Twain

What prevents people from even getting off the ground? I like to break it down into two reasons:

one is technical and the other is mental. Let’s start with the technical one. The most obvious rea-

son that people don’t get started is that they just don’t know how. Simple, right? They don’t even

know where to begin. While not having the correct information can stall you, the opposite ex-

treme is having too much information. People get so overwhelmed with information that it para-

lyzes them. When I was creating this product that you’re reading now, I followed the steps that I

am outlining for you. The problem for me was my background.

I was trained as a marine scientist with an emphasis in aquatic toxicology. That’s quite a mouth-

ful. By default, I tend to over analyze things to the point where I end up not doing anything. It’s

the classic paralysis by analysis. I didn’t make any headway until I learned to stop over analyzing

and just do it. It is still a challenge for me, but I don’t let myself stay idle for too long.

SIMPLE VS. EASY

There is a difference between something being easy and something being simple. If I say I’m

going to give you a million dollars and all you have to do is take your bike from Florida to

California, that’s pretty simple, isn’t it? Just go from point A to point B. It’s not exactly an easy

task, especially if you are not used to riding a bike.

So, don’t confuse “simple” with “easy”.

As I said, there are generally two reasons why people don’t get started. The technical reason

for not getting started is simple to address. It’s just a matter of presenting the information in a

way people can grasp. The mental roadblocks are more subtle reasons which make them more

insidious.

Let me introduce you to the fear of failure and its evil twin sibling the fear of success.

THE FEAR OF FAILURE

The fear of failure is easier of the two to recognize. No one wants to look like a fool or to appear

dumb.

For example, there are books and audio programs out there designed speci!cally to help men

overcome the fear of failure when trying to talk to women. Fear of failure is also why public

speaking is the number one fear, particularly the United States. Messing up is one thing, doing it

in front of a captive audience terri!es people more than the fear of death.

Part of the fear of failure is being afraid of not living up to other people’s or one’s own expecta-

tions. We are our own worst critic. The fear of failure is a defense mechanism that is admirable,

but can paralyze your success. Understand that the inner critic is the scared part of you that lives

for the status quo. It is afraid to step outside of its comfort zone. Acknowledge the critic and rec-

ognize him or her for what he or she is, a scared child.

We can also fear failure when we don’t have a track record of success.

THE FEAR OF SUCCESS

The fear of success is probably the worse of the two for the simple fact that it seems counter-

intuitive that anyone would fear moving forward in life and achieving their goals and life dreams.

What rational-thinking person would be afraid to succeed? So, the fear of success is not as

obvious for that very reason. Since many people can’t imagine that they would fear their own

greatness, they often don’t recognize the signs of the fear of success and continue to sabotage

themselves. Fear of success and failure often go hand in hand. People often go through life not

knowing why they are not getting what they want out of life. Yes, other factors can be involved,

but I’m talking speci!cally about the success factor. I’ve listed one of the reasons why we fear

success.

PROBLEM 1. We fear that we will achieve the goal we want only to be unsatis!ed or empty

after the goal is achieved.

Sometimes your identity is so tied up in your goals that you can feel lost after the feat is accom-

plished. After a goal is accomplished there can be this feeling of aimlessness. You think, “Now

what?” The completion of a goal can sometimes feel like being slammed into a brick wall.

SOLUTION 1: Mini tasks and goals; progression instead of perfection.

SOLUTION 2: My second strategy is to realize (and this is an extremely important point) it’s

not the goal; it’s the person you become in pursuit of that goal! It’s important to focus on self-

development while you’re working on your goals. If I had kept that thought in mind when I was

TheGetStartedExpert.com

PROBLEM 2: We fear that our success will isolate us from our loved ones.

The desire to !t in or to belong is one of the hallmarks of our human nature. We are generally

social creatures. That’s why acceptance from family and friends is so important to us and plays a

crucial part in determining human behavior. People like me, who are introverts, would rather be

alone with our thoughts than out and about at a large social gathering. Too much social interac-

tion wears us out and we need alone time to recharge. Still, we need some interaction with other

people. Wanting to bond with another human being is quite natural and can be healthy. However,

this bond has a darker side.

In the effort to keep those bonds, people sometimes !nd themselves in situations they loathe but

tolerate just to keep their loved ones happy. Take, for example, a college friend of mine; she re-

ally wanted to become a veterinarian, but her parents were adamant that she become a doctor. I

don’t know if she ever went to medical school or not. I do remember that she was so miserable

because she hated every waking moment of preparing for medical school but didn’t want to dis-

appoint her parents. I could probably go through a long list of case studies where children chose

career paths not because they cared about that particular !eld but because, they just wanted to

make their parents happy. It’s not uncommon for people to marry folks they don’t love just to

make others happy or move to a city they could care less about for the same reason.

Understand that people can sometimes take your success as an insult to themselves. Though the

logic seems "awed, the real issue is that you are doing something that magni!es their own me-

diocrity or unwillingness to live life courageously. This jealousy lends itself to subsequent criti-

cism. Even something like you learning another language can be seen as an insult to your loved

ones.

SOLUTION 1: When dealing with loved ones, there is just no easy solution. People who are

emotionally invested in others, especially parents, may !nd themselves in con"ict with you. One

way to deal with them is to share neutral information about your life-leaving out the juicy parts.

In my life, I learned to keep conversations to general things like, “work is !ne,” “church is !ne,”

“dinner is !ne,” “the weather is !ne” etc. It can be painful, but I’d rather have a civil conversation

talking about mundane things, than constantly having to defend myself for why I want to do the

things I want to do. This can work for you with many people in your life.

Probably the best coping mechanism in your arsenal is knowledge. Knowing that jealousy and

envy come from one’s own insecurities and self-esteem issues can put things into perspective. For

example, when I see someone glaring at me out of resentment, I used to get upset. Now, I almost

feel sorry for them. Ironically, people fear being isolated from loved ones when they, in fact, fear

that your success will take you away from them.

The fear, resentment, or jealousy that other people have can manifest itself in the form of criti-

cism. Fearing isolation is bad enough without fearing the criticism you might get from people.

Don’t let yourself get offended or angry over someone else’s sense of inadequacy or self-loathing.

I’ve never been the type to downplay intelligence just to make someone else feel better. That said,

I don’t like being something I’m not just to soothe someone else’s fragile ego.

Because of bad thinking and bad habits, my life has been riddled with missed opportunities.

My challenge to you is to overcome mental barriers and to live courageously! DEMO
