ner of Eaton Rapids knows alot about prison life, havingspent three and a half yearsincarcerated in North Caroli-na for drug trafficking offens-es.
He sold pot, acid and co-caine and has the colorfulstories to prove it. Once hemanaged a trip on a Grey-hound bus, for instance, withdrugs hidden in his boots.
Today Skinner credits hisprisonyearsforwhathasbeenperhaps his greatest blessing:finding God and the strengthto turn his life around.
Waiting to be sentenced,he happened to have a shortconversation with another in-mate, a conversation that“planted a seed” in his soulthat eventually blossomedinto a new way of living.
“Prison is a miserable life,”Skinnersaid,“(but)Idon’tcar-ry that with me (anymore),”adding that after giving his lifeto Christ, he began studyingand working to help others.
He’s had a few “mysteri-ous things” happen to him, too, in which he sees God’shand.
For example, Skinner wasonce at a gas station whena woman drove in, came upto him and gave him a “sternmessage” about how he hadto change his life. “You’re nota stranger to God,” the strang-
er told him before she droveoff without buying any gas.
TodaySkinnerhasfinishedatrainingcoursethroughNewDirections, a local prisonministry, and spends a goodchunk of his time volunteer-ing there.
He writes pen pal lettersto prisoners all over the Unit-
ed States and dreams of oneday starting a Christian reen-tryhomeforrecentlyreleasedinmates.
He now has a stable fam-ily life with his wife, Danielle, and two young sons and hasmade the Eaton Rapids Wes-leyan Church his home.
“I’m at the most peace I’ve
ever been in my life,” he said.New Directions, Inc., now
in rented space at MountHope Church in Delta Town-ship, casts a wide net. Its di-rector, Pastor Len Hill, trainsoutreach volunteers who vis-it prisons and jails to counsel
Ex-offender Kurt Skinner of Eaton Rapids works in the New Directions prisonministry office at Mt. Hope Church in Delta Township March 9. Volunteers visitinmates in jails and prisons, write letters to more than 60 inmates each monthand collect and distribute Bibles and other Christian materials all over theUnited States.

EAST LANSING, MI | HOW MANYFRIENDS HAVE TOLD YOU THEY LOVE
THEIR HEARING AIDS? Now how manyhave said their hearing aids makesome sounds too loud, don’t workwell in noise, or they can’t tell if theyare really helping them hear at all?Audiologists and dispensers try tomake hearing aids function the bestthey can to give the patient a goodoutcome. But there were always a lotof difficulties surrounding comfortand understanding of speech.
Let’s say you havea small child,an average sizedwoman, and a verylarge man, all withthe same hearingloss. All hearingaids would beprogrammed the
same way, according to the hearingaid manufacturers software. But theear canals themselves must figureinto the process, as well. Withoutdiving into too much physics, earcanal size and shape for the childwould be quite small. The womanwould be close to the average sizeear canals and the man’s ear canalswould be quite large and long. Thechild would receive too much powerfrom the hearing aids, the woman’sfitting would be close, and the man’shearing aids would seem very quiet. All hearing aid manufacturers basetheir science off the average ear. Butno one has the average ear.Live speech mapping is the latestinnovative approach to hearing aidfitting which uses natural speech toshow how effective digital hearing
aids are in helping you to hearspeech. With digital speech mapping,an actual speech signal, not tones orhissing sounds, is used to test thehearing aids while inserted in thepatient’s ears. This allows for the shapeand size of the patient’s ear canals to beincluded in the fitting process, as wellas using the most important signal wehear, speech. For hearing aid fittingsto be successful, speech must beappropriately amplified with respectto loudness, clarity, and comfort.Soft speech should be perceived assoft, moderate speech sounds shouldbe perceived as moderate, and loudspeech sounds should not reach thepatient’s discomfort level.Speech mapping helps to provide
a clear “visual” sense of the hearingloss, and the benefits or perhaps thelimitations that your current hearingaids offer in relation to actual speech. While wearing hearing aids, a tinyprobe microphone is inserted intothe ear canal while the hearing aidsare running, then a stimulus (voices/music) is used to measure the outputand shows if the hearing aids areamplifying sounds appropriately. TheLive Speech Map is displayed on amonitor through easily-understoodgraphics so that you can actuallysee sounds that are missing and bepresented with a clear visual senseof hearing loss and aided benefitsrelating to actual speech. It allowsyou to see graphically just how theaid is performing in a live, real worldenvironment.Once we see what sounds you’re
missing, we’ll be able to tune yourpersonal hearing aids until it restoresthe missing speech patterns andtones. So, not only will you hear thedifference a hearing aid makes withyour speech, you’ll be able to see thesounds being restored visually aswell. A successful hearing aid fittingshould be a dynamic, patient-centered
process. To achieve optimum success, the dispensing professional musttailor the process to meet the needs, abilities, and desires of the patient. If you are wondering if your hearingaids, or those of your loved ones, aremeeting their current needs, pleasecall Accuquest Hearing Center at
877-560-3786. Request a no chargeconsultation using the Auricle DigitalSpeech Mapping System. This systemhas set the acknowledged industrystandard for hearing instrumentfitting equipment. This can lead toa better insight into exactly howhearing aids are performing.
Hearing loss is better servicedby healthcare providers withthe appropriate credentialsand resources.

DELTA TWP. - The DeltaTownship Historical Soci-ety will present a specialhistorical program titledLansing to Lansing andBack – The Rededication ofthe 1799 North Log Cabin,Lansing Township, NY. Theprogram will be held onThursday, April 21 at 6 p.m.at Delta Township Adminis-tration Building.
Jane and Terry Brycewill present a program onthe North family migrationin the 1830’s from Lansing,New York to Delhi Town-ship, Michigan and the earlyformation of Lansing, Mich-igan.
The presentation is cen-tered on their August 2010trip to the New York Lan-sing Township and the re-dedication of the 1799 logcabin of Thomas North, aRevolutionary War veteran.
Have you ever wonderedhow Lansing was named?Jane Bryce’s ancestor Jo-seph E. North (Thomas’soldest son) suggested thename to commemorate thetown where he was born.
At the time of the cabinrededication last year, the
Lansing Star paper inter-viewed Jane.
“He was the first to goto Michigan,” Bryce said.“Then he talked his brotherHenry into visiting him. Onthat visit Henry decidedhe would move to thatarea. Joseph mentioned thename Lansing. Henry ac-tually suggested the nameGenessee, but that was al-ready being used some-where closer to Detroit, soLansing won out for thename of the township. Thecity of Lansing was namedafter the township.”
Jane Bryce is also a de-scendent of the Moon fam-ily who lived in the cabinon the grounds of Woldu-mar Nature Center. She hasdone extensive research ontheir family and the historyof the Lansing area.
The administrationbuilding is at 7710 W. Sagi-naw Hwy., across from Hor-rocks.
The talk is open tothe public and is offeredfree of charge. For moreinformation call517-974-5523 or [email protected].
