DELTA TWP. - You won’tbe able to trash your house-hold junk for free at the recy-cling center next year, thanksto budget balancing cuts ap-proved 6-0 by the townshipboard Dec. 6.
Trustee Jan Cunninghamwas absent.
Greener Delta, the ecologyevent that brought familiesout in droves last spring toLansing Community College’swest campus, also bit thedust.
Both of these together willsave $30,000 in next year’sbudget.
Township finance director
Jeff Anderson said he waspleased with a balanced bud-get that contains no layoffsand no decrease in police andfire protection, despite a pro-jected drop of almost 7-per-cent in general fund revenue.
Some savings will comefrom township administra-tion. Employees will have noCOLA next year and therewill be no outstate travel. Also, the vacant deputy chiefposition in the fire depart-ment won’t be filled.
The public will see a newCommunity Development De-partment replace the currentbuilding, planning and engi-neering departments, whichwill cut the number of admin-istrators from three to one.
The two full-time townshipengineers nearing retirementwill not be replaced, for asavings of $230,000.
You’ll see fewer new side-walks put in next summer, too, with the sidewalk fund-ing slashed by 50-percent to$50,000.
A balanced budget for thecoming year doesn’t mean thefinance department can takeit easy.
Although there are manyunknowns, the 2012 generalfund deficit is pegged at half amillion dollars.
“The wild cards are prop-erty values, interest rates andwhat the state does with ourrevenue sharing,” Andersonsaid.
DELTA TWP. - An experi-enced principal has been hiredfor East Intermediate School aspart of a new round of admin-istrative changes in the Waver-ly district, superintendent Dr.Debra Jones announced Dec.9.
Delta Township residentCharlie Phillips will be principalfor the rest of the school year, replacing Jacklin Blodgett.
Phillips retired last springafter 20 years at Grand Ledge’sBeagle Middle School, 18 ofthem as principal. A seasoned
administrator, he was once thedirector of alternative educa-tion in the Lansing district andwas the principal of Otto Mid-dle School for three years.
Phillips says he misses deal-ing with students and staff.
“I think I really could helpthem out,” he said of the Wa-verly district. “It’s a good fit forWaverly and a nice fit for me.”
The district anticipates Phil-lips’ coming on board after theholiday break.
Blodgett, who remained asassistant superintendent whilerunning East, will now assumefull responsibility for budget
and finance inthe district.
Jones saidthe district didpost the chieffinancial offi-cer positionformerly heldby Rob Spag-nuolo, whomoved to theDeWitt school
district after the start of theschool year.
“We interviewed several can-didates,” Jones said. “None hadthe (broad) experience to cre-

Stimulus “Last Chance”
“Economic Stimulus”money for your own pocket…
Act quickly, and you can receive a $1,500 gift from thegovernment for the most comfortable and efficientheating & cooling system you’ve probably ever seen.
I know. We hear all these “claims” about some super-fantastic Government program that’s supposed to help normal,hard-working people living on “Main Street, USA.” But italways seems to end up in somebody else’s pocket, right?
Well, not this time… if you act quickly.Among the billionsof dollars the Government spread across our country inefforts to stimulate our economy, there’s something for yourvery own home and your very own pocket.
It’s about your energy bills.Yes, I mean your energy billsfor heating and cooling your home. Are you aware that inthe Lansing area your heating and air conditioning systemis responsible for an average of 43% of your monthly utilitybill? Meanwhile, the cost of energy continues to skyrocket. What is the solution?Where does it end? Right here, rightnow, and here’s why:
The government tripled the Federal tax credits throughthe end of 2010 to homeowners who are willing to helpconserve energy.
That says “credit.” That’s very different from a deductionthat only reduces the amount of taxable income. A creditdirectly reduces the amount of taxes you will be required to
pay. This is almost like the IRS marking through your taxbill with a red pen that says,
“Courtesy discount of $1,500. Love, the U.S.Government.” Just incredible.
What’s happened is, through the end of this year – in thegovernment’s best offer ever – you can get a 30% taxcredit of up to $1,500 for the purchase of highly efficientair conditioners, heat pumps or furnaces.
So invest a moment now and call 517-627-4822 to schedulea time for your Free Home Energy Evaluation. We willprovide you with all the details regarding system benefits, reduced cost of ownership, utility savings, the new taxcredits and your projected return on investments. The calland Energy Evaluation are FREE, but the comfort andsavings are yours!
So callAire Serv at 517-627-4822 today to schedule yourfree evaluation. We’ll tell you exactly how much of the newstimulus package you are eligible to receive.
“I’ve never seen an offer like thisduring my whole life in this business.”

Jon E. Arendsen Designs, Inc.Jon E. Arendsen Designs, Inc.FINE JEWELRY CREATION FORTHREE GENERATIONS
DELTA TWP. - Decemberhigh school basketballgames, especiallynonleague, have nearly nobearing once March rollsaround.
But two mid-Michiganteams with major aspira-tions for that championshipmonth will draw plentyfrom one of the state’s topfirst-week matchups Friday,Dec. 3.
East Lansing is the reign-ing Class A champion, andWaverly is the team poten-tially best-built to unseatthe Trojans atop the areathis winter.
But a 44-38 Trojans winover the Warriors left thereigning No. 1 still the teamto beat - even if this newestversion of East Lansing re-ceived a few eye-openersafter falling behind early, getting up big, and thennearly letting Waverly catchup.
“Right now, it gets kindahectic. But at the sametime, all teams are going tobe hectic at the beginningof the season. I think we’regoing to learn fast,” EastLansing senior guard Deb-orah Hoekstra said. “One,it will give us a littlebit of confidence that wecame and we played againsta tough team and wematched them. Two, it’sgood because it gives us achance to really see whatwe’re made of.”
Hoekstra, who hassigned with Bowling Green, has played just two gamesfor East Lansing (2-0) afterplaying her first three sea-sons at Eastern.
The Trojans’ startinglineup Friday, Dec. 3, alsoincluded a three-year var-sity player in junior guardAlex Green, but also twosophomores and a fresh-men with little combinedvarsity experience.
And yet, they hung toughwhen Waverly (0-1) flew out
to an 8-0 lead and remainedahead until a Hoekstra bas-ket gave the Trojans theirfirst advantage with 4:38 togo in the second quarter.
But Waverly also pulledoff some smart maneuvers, including a full-court pressthat gave East Lansingsome fits midway throughthe fourth quarter. Runningand pressuring, Waverlywent on a 10-0 run over 3minutes.
East Lansing wasn’tmuch better from the floor, hitting just 36 percent of itsshots. The teams combinedfor 47 turnovers. B over thecourt.
“We have so much tolearn. That’s the thing Ilove most about team,” EastLansing coach Rob Smithsaid, “is that they’re a reallygood basketball team rightnow, and they know about25 percent of what theyneed to know.”
Hoekstra finished with16 points, seven reboundsand five steals, and sopho-
more forward Piper Tuckerhad 10 rebounds. Freshmanguard Meechi Thompsonadded nine points for theTrojans.
For the Warriors, juniorforward Taylor McKay hadseven points, seven re-bounds, five assists and fivesteals. Senior center CarliReid had nine points andsix rebounds and seniorguard Deanna Stickler-Gat-son added eight points.
Waverly is the coaches’preseason favorite in theCAAC Red, and East Lan-sing is the same in the Blue. They won’t meet again untila possible matchup in theClass A district at Eastern.By then, many of Friday’slessons will no doubt havetaken hold.
“Early in the season, both teams are going tomake a lot of mistakes. Sothere’s going to be a littlebit of ugliness early on,”Waverly coach Erik Kutassaid.
“But I think the intensity
level and the com-petitiveness (of thisgame) was similar tothat of a playoffgame. We know ourteam’s going to fight. We know our team’sgotta a lot of heart. We know our team’sathletic. .... And weknow we’re going tobe a really goodteam.
“But there’s noquestion we havesome things we’vegot to work on.”
Taylor McKay (12)of Waverly bumpsAlex Green(bottom) of EastLansing as McKaylays the ball upduring their gameFriday Dec. 3,2010 in DeltaTownship.

DELTA TWP. - The Wa-verly Middle School weightroom has eight more ma-chines to help kids keepphysically fit, thanks to TimWilson and Mitchell Gast ofGym Bumz Fitness on W.Saginaw.
Gym Bumz recently do-nated two Stairmasters, twoLifeFitness bikes, a verticalchest press, two crunch ma-chines and a weight benchto the school.
Middle school phys edteacher Gary Wilson, whoworks out at Gym Bumz, inquired about several ma-chines he noticed were notbeing used. It turned outthey were scheduled to besold.
“They (the fitness centerowners) were happy to do-nate them,” Wilson said. “Itcosts them more to sellthem.”
Wilson, a self described“lightweight and cardioguru” said both he andMichelle DeBrabander, themiddle school’s other physed teacher, are well trainedin how to help students usethe machines safely.
DeBrabander said the
“new” equipment will add tothe middle school curricu-lum and will help both stu-dents and teachers.
“This equipment will as-
sist in helping studentsachieve life-long healthyhabits as well as help thestaff in achieving their fit-ness goals,” she said.
