Defend Your LMN: Creating, Submitting and Supporting Your Documentation for Complex Rehab Technology DATE & TIME: LOCATION: CONTACT: PRESENTER: TARGET AUDIENCE This program is designed for Occupational Therapists, Occupational Therapy Assistants, Physical Therapists, Physical Therapist Assistants, Assistive Technology Professionals, and Medical Suppliers/Providers. COURSE OVERVIEW The evaluation process for Complex Seating and Mobility Equipment includes a variety of steps, many of which must be completed in a timely manner, with correct vocabulary, and specific personalization. The lecture portion of this course will review key criteria for completing a letter of medical necessity for mobility equipment including ultralight weight manual wheelchairs, power wheelchairs with power seat functions, as well as seating and positioning components. In an interactive workshop, participants will work in groups to create an effective LMN for a given clinical example. They will describe subjective client goals, objective tests and measures, MRADL status, functional mobility goals, as well as research based recommendation and justification for each component recommended. They will also predict a timeline of events that need to take place for approval when given a specific funding source. The LMN will then be traded to the opposing group for review and that group will choose to deny or approve the equipment based on documentation provided. If the LMN is not approved, the defending group will have to revise their documentation and each group member will state their case for each segment of the LMN. By the end of this course, clinicians will have a better understanding of how to write an effective LMN, critically appraise their work, create an appeal, as well as additional methods for continuing to support the need for customized equipment for their clients. LEVEL- Intermediate| INSTRUCTIONAL METHOD- Lecture | Discussion | Clinical Applications | Demonstration CEU OBJECTIVES Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to: 1. Differentiate two benefits and potential drawbacks of five different power seat functions. 2. Summarize how to complete an effective evaluation for an ultra-light weight manual wheelchair. 3. List three key objective tests and measures to include in a letter of medical necessity for complex rehabilitation technology. 4. Participate in group discussion and activity to compose a letter of medical necessity for a given clinical example. 5. Utilize information presented to critique a letter of medical necessity and determine if the equipment would be denied or approved. 6. Given the outcome of the LMN, determine alternative solutions for continuing with equipment procurement.
