Daly stated to tho police that hohad considerable trouble with thoCaptain. Last Sunday he had beena few minutes late, as the cars werodelayed on account of tho funeral o(Prince Kawannnakoa, nnd on that occasion tho Captain had berated himstrongly and had practically dlscharged him. The following day, however,Kokerwltz had shaken hands withhim and asked him to stay with thoship.

Last night, so Daly says, the Cap-

tain called him n foul namo when hewent on board. Daly resented it anJhe and Kokerwltz camo to blows.

Daly denies absolutely that hestabbed the Captain. Ho says, thathe owns only one knife, nnd that"only an excuse for n knife," nndthat was locked in his room at thotime.

The police have ascertained thatlast night, before ho boarded thoship, Daly had n quarrel with "Jerry," a barkeeper at "Scotty's" place, and gave him a black cyo In thosaloon.

After tho affair on tho Despatch, however, ho slept at "Jerry's" room,as ho often .did. Daly's friends arevery sorry for him, as they say thathe Is an excellent man, though quarrelsome when under the Influence ofliquor. He has a wife and family.

If Garfield will get out nntl run n; common sonso slinll prevail ngnlnstfoot-rac- e Just to show that lie la still fanaticism, lie will Improve the con-I- n

condition, his capture of the crowd dltlon of ho community and thowill be complete.

Here's where the people get one onthe Chamber of Commerce, Garfieldcould afford to miss tho Chamber'meeting but not the people assembledat Aala Park.

It Is a safe wager that SecretaryGarfield did not find a slnglo localitythroughout his tour where the Euro-pean Immigrant would not bo a pro-

moter of Territorial and Americanprogress.

As more dividends are announcedthe Stock Exchange responds with ageneral depression of prices. Is Itnot so that conditions in Hawaii arepeculiar mighty peculiar! ALL-FIIIB- D

STRANQK1

Judging from the reports comingIn to the II 1 1 o t i n , Honolulu

has a Berloup automobile prob-

lem In protecting the lives of pede-strians. Autospcedlnltls rockllnensisIs becoming epidemic.

Honolulu Is not the only one thathaggles some over the Fleet. Downin Sydney they are urging the peopleto treat the "Jackles" of the Britishships with as much enthusiasm as thomen from our ships.

Sherman has mado a poor start forVice Presidential honors. He mayfeel quite equal to the duties of thefuture, but there is no doubt that hispolitical opponents will aggravate hisphysical disabilities to the utmost.

Early drafts of tho Republicanplatform made no reference to Ha-

waii when reviewing conditions Inthe Island "possessions." They areare learning gradually to place thoTerritory of Hawaii In its proper Ter-

ritorial class.

Sunday baseball has been found amoral agent. Will some of the peo-

ple who thought differently, whenthe fight was on, kindly recall thatthere are other points on which theAverage Citizen ls'equally correct Inhis Judgment?

Between requests to keep out ref-

erence to automobile accidents, di-

vorce, and other court proceedings, the newspapers are having a glorioustime In making private arguments onwhether the real province of a news-paper Is to suppress the news.

In about two years Mr. Dickey willbe due to admit that boxing Is notprize-lightin- g, nnd he believes In itafter all. Dut what n time we arehaving to convince fellows like Dick-ey against their will, and what aprice Honolulu Is paying for theireducation!

It Ib all right to bring in new andpopular brands of coffee, but the cor-

rect Ideal will not be satisfied till Ha-

waiian coffee as a highest-clas- s brandIs known throughout the mainlandmarket. Hawaii should advertiseand popularize Its products as Cali-

fornia has done.

What Garfield said to the planterswould be the most Interesting. Atthat meeting he was talking to the

even men who, according to LinkMcCandless, give orders for every-

thing that Is done In the Territory ofHawaii, and no one but Linkdares to say them nay.

The Bulletin has done Its beetto obtain authoritative confirmationof the report that Borne of our fanati-cal friends urged the commanders ofVisiting warships to hold their menIn check. The statements, frcolymade, have not been confirmed. TheroIs no doubt, however, that thereIb a change from earlier daysin the attitude of ships of the Navytoward the city of Honolulu. Ninoof ten Average Citizens in tho townare satisfied that the real or imaginedchans la due to the extreme effortBmade' by certain of our own citizensto prove Honolulu the raw edge of

bell-hol- e, and lmprovo It for thobenefit of tho Fleet. When the Average .Citizen arises and demands that

Sir. Dickey's acknowledgment ofconversion to the Sunday-baseba- ll

Idea should huvo a good effect onborne of tho citizens of Honolulu whoarc very much disposed to scorn the"liberal" Ideas of tho Average Citi-

zen,When Sunday baseball was first

proposed the advocates of this health-ful pastlmo on the Sabbath were putdown by many of Mr. Dickey's asso-

ciates as dangerous persons. Theywere considered DAD indeed, for theywere proposing to desecrate the Sabbath day, and disturb the quiet oftheir fellow citizens.

Now these Average Citizens wcronot bad; they wero not intending todisturb anyone; they were not sin-

ners.They were exercising their com

mon sense and knowledge of humannature In dealing with exact conditions. They were Just as honest, justas sincere as any of those by whomthey were so harshly criticised. Theyare as good, perhaps better, citizensthan 'some of their critics.

We make reference to this, andcall especial attention to the expe-

rience of Mr. Dickey, because theroare other matters of public morals onwhich the Average Citizen of thecity of Honolulu has been most bit-

terly assailed by tho strict construe- -

tionlsts and high-tensio- n or fanaticalmoralists.

The Average Citizen is as certainlyRIGHT in his attltudo toward themore recent moral problems ns howas on Sunday baseball.

It Is sometimes hard to determinewhich Is the more deserving of crltlclsm the two or three fanatics andtheir scheming satellites who set outto reform everything and everybodyIn seven days, or the Average Citizens who know that the fanatics arowrong injuring themselves and In-

juring the town but still let themgo on with their program of Intolernncc and outrageous conduct.

The Average Citizen, assisted bythe 1) u 1 1 o 1 1 n , put tho Sundaybaseball project through, and thosewho cursed tho combination for itsevil work have come to praise it.

Taking this for a text, let us re-

member that there Is no set of per-

sons that possesses monopoly ofrighteousness or community decency.

The safest level for any city to fol-

low Is the sentiment of the AverageCitizen, or, as San Francisco has putJt, the Second-Uc- st Citizen the manwho Is respectable and

who doesn't assume to sit InJudgment on his fellow-me- butlores his home, his family, and wantsto see them properly protected, whois liberal and decent.

It the Average Citizen will takecommand of this town, as he shoulddo, the conditions will bo much morecatisfactory to those who live heroand those who may come. Today thofanatics hold very complete sway.

Fanaticism Is ruinous, and Honolulu has enjoyed a surfeit.
