2018 DECEMBER The word alone evokes warm feelings of crackling fires, family gatherings, delicious food, meaningful reflections and simple happiness. No matter what age, the excitement is palpable. Oddly enough, I had those same feelings the first day of November. As I opened my mail, I came across a note from a dear friend whose parents were residents of Arbor Acres. Her father passed away years ago and her mother more recently. They were beloved individuals– both here and in the community of Winston-Salem. I loved this resident. Her daughter and I carpooled for six years. The resident kept up with everyone around her. During her last six months, she was unable to verbalize her thoughts, but she maintained that special smile of knowing exactly what was going on and letting you know, she was definitely present. The note was beautifully written and told of her mother’s love for Arbor Acres and the care she received here. The daughter went on to say that she was enclosing a gift specifically for those residents who needed assistance. While living in Strickland Place, her mother witnessed a great deal and saw loving care administered to all, regardless of background. She saw what warm feelings and sincere love really look like. As I opened the enclosed check I thought to myself, “How nice of this resident to remember us.” It had been a while since she passed away, and I believed the gift was a token of her daughter’s appreciation. My development logic whispered that it was probably a wonderful check for $1,000. I looked and saw that it was from the resident’s checking account–not her daughter’s–and thought for a fleeting moment, it might be for $2,000. To my surprise, the check was for $100,000. Instantly I became a child on early Christmas morning, opening a gift that was totally unexpected and experiencing shock and delight at the extraordinary kindness and thoughtfulness behind the gift. I was overwhelmed. And such is life at Arbor Acres. One person, one moment, one planned gift that will be life changing for so many others. I invite you to join this resident and give to the Resident Assistance Fund at this special time of year –every gift matters. Amen. December

DECEMBER

The word alone evokes warm feelings of crackling fires, family gatherings, delicious food, meaningful reflections and simple happiness. No matter what age, the excitement is palpable.

Oddly enough, I had those same feelings the first day of November. As I opened my mail, I came across a note from a dear friend whose parents were residents of Arbor Acres. Her father passed away years ago and her mother more recently. They were beloved individuals–both here and in the community of Winston-Salem.

Amen.
