This is an extension of Bishop Thomas' pastoral letter in which he sets the vision for where we are going. The strategic planning of the diocese has also said that this is important and has made it central to our work here. When Dr. Bergsma came for our parish mission, he gave us, on the first night, a practical approach to fostering holy families. Therefore, on this weekend when we celebrate the Holy Family it may be helpful to be reminded of the seven principles that he suggested. They are as follows: 1. Go to Mass. We should be as insistent that our families go to Mass as we are that they go to school or the doctor. We do it not just when we feel like it but as a sign of our love. 2. Go to confession. Dr. Bergsma mentioned that every great spiritual writer has mentioned that one should go to confession at least monthly and not more than weekly. It is an amazing opportunity to celebrate as he called it, "a second baptism." 3. Pray the rosary. He mentioned that the family who "prays together, stays together." -------------- Praying as a family helps us to focus our prayers and help each other get to heaven. 4. Family dinner. We know that in our ever busying world that it is so important to spend time together. Dr. Bergsma mentioned that it is at the family dinner that we experience each other as a family. 5. Spiritual reading and prayer. He suggests that a family who reads scripture and the lives of the Saints begins to imitate what they read. 6. One on one time. Dr. Bergsma mentioned that the average American family only spends 15 minutes a week in one on one time, while logging 30+ hours of television. Turn off the TV, go for a walk, sit on the porch, and enjoy each other's company. (Even if they're crazy.) 7. Celebrate. Our faith and our families are only boring if we set out to make them boring. When we celebrate moments of virtue, goodness, truth, and beauty we make our lives vibrant and exciting. No matter which of these we choose work on to enrich our families, may we all more closely imitate the Holy Family together, FCOMPLIMENTARY LIFETOUCH PHOTOS: Anyone who had their photograph taken for the directory but did not order extras, may pick up their complementary photo at the parish office. DID YOU KNOW?

Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph The Holy Family consists of the Child Jesus, the

Virgin Mary, and Saint Joseph. Veneration of the Holy Family was formally begun in the 17th century by Saint Frani;ois de Laval, the first bishop of New France, who founded a Confraternity.

The Feast of the Holy Family is a liturgical celebration in the Catholic Church in honor of Jesus, his mother, and his legal father, Saint Joseph, as a family. The primary purpose of this feast is to present the Holy Family as a model for Christian families.

Appropriate to the season, we usually visualize the Holy Family as they appear in the typical nativity scene: the baby Jesus lying in a manger, surrounded by his parents. Joseph, Mary and Jesus lived together for many years, through Jesus' infancy, childhood, adolescence, and maybe even into his adulthood. As we celebrate the Holy Family, let us call to mind the families we have been a part of, both as children and as adults. As we move into the new year let us keep in mind our mission statement, "Leading all families in loving, serving and knowing God in our community". God Bless and Have a Blessed New Year!

Reflections on the Readings

The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph taken from St. Joseph Sunday Missal

First Reading - 1 Samuel 1 :20-22,24-28 This reading teaches us that motherhood and life

are a gift of God. The presence of children in a family signals the continuation of life and manifests the newness of God's love, which gives origin to ever new creatures.

Second Reading -1 John 3:1-2, 21-24 Every family must be a mirror of the divine love

because the root of every love is God. Therefore, members of a family should deal lovingly with one another.

Gospel -Luke 2:41-52 Entire villages joined the annual Passover

pilgrimage to Jerusalem. It is quite normal that Jesus' parents did not worry about their son till the first night on their way home. Jesus listened and asked questions. At twelve, a year before his "bar Mitzvah," he had learned the Torah, the Law of Moses, and its interpretations by the rabbis. "In my Father's house" indicates the close personal relationship between Jesus and the Father. Mary had to realize that Jesus was not simply her son, but the Father's Son, who had a special mission that would mean separation and pain for her.

"They did not understand" indicates that Mary did not understand Jesus as God's Son from the very beginning. In faith she had to accept a mystery, which became clear only in the light of the Easter event. Christmas, God sharing our human condition, is a mystery that we must accept in faith, as Mary did.

Solemnity of Mary, The Holy Mother of God

First Reading - Numbers 6:22-27 Israel, God's chosen people, knew God from what

he did for them. By calling upon his name and power, the liturgical prayer of this reading implores God's graciousness for all of us.

"May (God) let his face shine upon us!" God's face became visible to us in the face of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Second Reading -Galatians 4:4-7 In Jesus, God has given us everything. Once we

were slaves, subjected to evil, but in the Lord, Jesus God adopted us as his children. Mary played and important role in God's self-disclosure as Father. She is the Mother of God's Son, in whose Spirit we can cry out "Abba!" ("Father!")

Gospel -Luke 2:16-21 Whoever receives Jesus Christ receives the

message of salvation. Luke depicts the shepherds, poor and despised, as the first ones to receive Jesus as Savior.

"Mary kept all these things, reflecting on them in her heart." As such Mary is an example to all praying people! We pray to God "that we may experience the intercession of her, through whom (we received) the author of life".
