Best Wishesfor a Happy

Holiday Season

Nothing can take the place of a Christmas tree when it comes time to decorate our homes for the holi-days. The tree is the focal point of the Christmas décor and sets the tone for the style and colours of all the other festive decorations.

The pleasure of

decorating the tree is what counts the most, whether you choose to have a natural or an artifi cial one. Both types of trees have their pros and cons.

The advantages of a natural tree:

• It fi lls the house with a wonderful aroma

• It has a natural look (which is always more beautiful)

• It’s an ecologi-

cal option — natural trees do not contrib-ute to deforestation,

as they are cultivat-ed for this purpose. Gas and oil use are minimal in their pro-duction; they can be composted; and they are produced locally or regionally

• It doesn’t require storage space

The advantages of an artifi cial tree:

• It is simple to set up

• It doesn’t lose its needles

• It doesn’t need to be watered

• If kept for more than ten years it could end up being less expensive than buying a natural tree every year

To avoid a “busy” effect when decorat-ing your Christmas tree, choose a style or theme for your decorations. Here are a few examples: mo nochrome decora-tions, an tique look, modern style, food theme (fi gures made of gingerbread or pas-try), or a wild touch (feathers, synthetic fur, reindeers). Once you’ve chosen your theme, take the time to fi nd decorations that go well together and that will create the look you want.

Spreading inspiration that comes from a devastating diagnosis

Christmas trees —Arti cial or real?

Get out the bowl and make some punch

Simple Punch Recipe Tips from the Old Farmer’s Almanac

• Get out the punch bowl and put it to work, or use a large glass pitcher. (Glass punch cups are readily available at thrift shops.)

• Freeze some of your punch in one or two ice cube trays, and use this instead of ice cubes to avoid diluting your drink.

• For decorative ice, add a few sweetened, dried cranberries, cherries, mint leaves, pieces of orange, or bits of pineapple to each ice cube tray compartment. Pour in diluted apple juice or water, and freeze. Add to the punch just before serving.

• To keep hot punch from cooling too much, don’t pour it all into the punch bowl but simmer about 1/4 of it on the stovetop, and occasionally use it to top off the bowl.

• Use your slow-cooker, set on low, to heat nonalcoholic drinks and keep them hot. Allow about 2 hours for the ingredients to get hot.

• If you use whole spices, add them when you rst heat up the ingredients, and strain them out before serving; or tie them up in a cheesecloth bundle and remove before serving.

Christmas Punch

This punch is a beautiful addition to your Christmas table. Not only does it feature the holiday’s colours, it is a

divine mix that your guests will love.

Yield: Makes 12 eight-ounce cups; 15 six-ounce.

1 quart cranberry juice 1 cup sugar

2 cups orange juice 1 cup pineapple juice

3/4 cup fresh or frozen lemon juice 1/2 teaspoon almond extract

2 cups ginger ale, chilled 1 pint pineapple sherbet

Blend cranberry juice, sugar, fruit juices, and almond extract. Refrigerate, covered, until serving time. Just before

serving, stir in ginger ale and sherbet.

Recycling isn’t just for Christmas time. There are more items and packaging to re-cycle around Christ-mas, but make it your gift to the environ-ment to recycle all year round. These tips from Recyle More will help you to stay environmentally conscious year round.

After Christmas you can recycle your used packaging, used elec-trical items and bat-teries.

Keep all recyclables clean. Remember to wash and squash be-fore popping them into your recycle bin.

Remember put the following Christmas packaging in your re-cycle bin once they’re clean and dry: Card-board and paper, food tins, aluminum drink cans, aluminum trays and plastic (Recycla-ble).

Keep glass separate for recycling at the bottle bank or recy-cling centre. Do not leave your bottles on the ground in boxes or bags at the bottle bank as this slows collections and is a litter offence leaving you open to potential prosecution.

How to recycle your used card-board and Christ-mas wrapping pa-per:

Fold used wrap-ping paper rather than scrunching it up. This

will help you sort it and you’ll fit more in your recycling bin.

Remember that Christmas crackers and Christmas cards are all recyclable.

Flatten used boxes and remove any plas-tic inserts in selection boxes.

No need to worry about selotape on wrapping paper; this can be recycled too.

Make sure all the cardboard and paper is clean and dry.

How to recycle food tins:

Rinse out the tins to remove any left over food or sauce.

Place the lids or tops inside the washed tin.

If you can, squash the tin, then pop it into your recycle bin.

How to recycle Aluminum cans:

Rinse out the drink cans to get rid of any left over fizzy drink.

Squash the can and pop it into your re-cycle bin.

Aluminum is not just used in drinks cans, you will find it in other areas around the house and it’s just as recyclable as a drinks can.

Aluminium trays – from mince pies and when you have eaten enough turkey don’t forget to recycle your take-away food trays. Just make sure these items are clean and dry.

Squash or flatten them and pop them into your recycle bin.

How to recycle Plastic:

Recycle all plas-tic containers with the number 1 and 2 placed inside a tri-angle, usually shown on the base of these bottles.

These include items such as plastic drinks bottles, milk bottles, shampoo bottles, detergent and wash-ing up liquid bot-tles, soap dispenser bottles, shower gel bottles and yogurt drink bottles.

Always rinse these bottles out to get rid of any leftovers.

Then squash them and pop them into your recycle bin.

The company that collects your recycle bin may take more types of plastic in their recycle bins, so check with them to see if you can recycle more.

How to recycle glass.

Rinse out glass drinks bottles to get rid of any left over liquid.

Don’t forget to recy-cle your mayonnaise, cranberry and pickled sauce jars.

Clean out your glass jars to get rid of any left over food.

Give the lids a quick wash and pop them separately into the re-cycle bin too.

Try to use reusable bags or boxes to col-lect up your glass bottles.

Remember don’t

just recycle items from your kitchen. Maybe make a New Years resolution to recycle more by re-cycling from other ar-eas of the house like the living room, bed-room, bathroom and

home office or study. When the festivi-

ties are over bring any unwanted gifts of clothes or toys to your local charity shop.
