A rusty Kerala banked on the brilliance of experienced attacker Tom Joseph to overcome a strong challenge from Rajasthan and win 25-22, 25-14, 25-14 in a men’s Group A match in the 62nd National volleyball championship at the Teerthanker Mahaveer University indoor sports complex here on Sunday.

The star-studded defending champion took a while to find its rhythm.

Page 7: VOLLEYBALL FEDERATION OF INDIAvolleyballindia.com/NATIONAL EVENTS/Senior 2013/BUL44.pdfVOLLEYBALL FEDERATION OF INDIA MORADABAD, December 22, 2013 Updated: December 22, 2013 23:16

In the opening set, Kerala struggled to contain Rajasthan which launched some well-planned attacks through seasoned setter Rajesh Kumar, attacker Dilip Khoiwal and blocker Lavmeet Kataria.

Joseph led Kerala’s fight. He caught the opponents off-guard through his swift and clever offensive moves capped with powerful hits and an occasional deft touch.

Boosted by international libero Kamlesh Khatik, Rajasthan displayed some spectacular saves and kept Kerala engaged in long rallies.

Rajasthan gave chase but the good work of Vibin M. George and Azees M.T. narrowly won Kerala the set.

Rajasthan continued to apply pressure, but committed too many unforced errors to lose the next two sets as well.

The comeback of Dubai-based Azees, who extended his leave to participate in the event, and K.G. Ragesh benefited Kerala.

Manu V., a good setter and a sound blocker, and Ratheesh K.S., a powerful attacker, contributed handsomely in the team’s victory.

“The first set was a humbling experience. This was the first match, I am sure the team will improve with time,” said Kerala coach S. Manoj.

Last year’s finalist Tamil Nadu rallied to a win over Punjab in a Group B encounter.

Tamil Nadu exhibited its all-round supremacy to begin its campaign with a 25-12, 25-14, 25-14 win over Himachal Pradesh in a women’s Group A match on the inaugural day of the 62nd National volleyball championship at the Teerthanker Mahaveer University indoor sports complex here on Saturday.

Tamil Nadu, featuring five members of the Madras University team that won the all- India inter-varsity title, banked on P. Narmada’s attacks and Elizabeth Paul’s fine blocks and placement to gather full three points.

The young Tamil Nadu players’ good individual form overshadowed their minor shortcomings. Narmada was exceptionally good in her attacks as she garnered points with her

Page 10: VOLLEYBALL FEDERATION OF INDIAvolleyballindia.com/NATIONAL EVENTS/Senior 2013/BUL44.pdfVOLLEYBALL FEDERATION OF INDIA MORADABAD, December 22, 2013 Updated: December 22, 2013 23:16

deep and powerful shots as Tamil Nadu opened up a six-point lead at the half-way stage of the opening set and extended it further.

Using her height, Elizabeth showcased some timely blocks and added useful points by finding the gaps. Libero K.S. Kavya made some outstanding saves, while setter K. Laxmi Priya played a crucial role with her swift movement as Tamil Nadu took the next two sets in similar fashion.

The Himachal girls suffered because of their below-par coordination and scores of unforced errors. Ankita Sharma and Neha Negi were the prominent scorers for the side.

In the men’s section, Goa, gearing up for the Lusofonia Games in January, rallied from two sets down to stun host Uttar Pradesh 10-25, 19-25, 25-19, 30-28, 15-10.

According to Goa coach Shyamsundar Tari, this was the first occasion when the team had begun the National championship with a win. It was also Goa’s first ever victory over Uttar Pradesh.

Meanwhile, the Tripura men’s team did not turn up for the event.

The results:

Men: Group A: Railways bt Haryana 25-14, 25-13, 5-23; Group C: Goa bt Uttar Pradesh 10-25, 19-25, 25-19, 30-28, 15-10; Group D: Jammu and Kashmir bt Mizoram 25-13, 23-25, 18-25, 26-24, 15-12; Pudducherry bt Jharkhand 25-20, 21-25, 25-20, 26-24.

Kochi: Motivating players to give their best for the national senior volleyball championship is a difficult task as there is little financial reward connected with the tourney . Even as the event is the premier volleyball championship in India, the players are often paid nothing, even to meet their daily expenses.

But when Kerala coach S. Manoj fielded his main six against the bench in a practice match held at the state camp, it was played with all its seriousness and the players literally fought for each point.

“Money is important but we cannot expect a reward and then play . We should give our best on court to get a win. Even an untimely miss could ruin our chance. Off court matters should remain outside,“ said Tom Joseph, who is representing the state for a record 17th year running.

“Our focus is to win the national title for the third consecutive time. A hattrick is something special and every player in the squad dreams about it. No previous Kerala contingent has won the title three times,“ he said.

Kerala captain K.G. Ragesh feels every team has its own strengths.

“Uttarakhand, Railways, Punjab and Tamil Nadu have good players, who can turn the match their way . The results will be based on our ability to adapt to each match conditions. I believe luck also has a major role,“ said the skipper.

“I have heard that Tamil Nadu has come up with a very determined team.

They lost their title to us two years ago and we humiliated them in the Federation Cup held in March. They had a month-long camp and also players for the Asian Games to be held next year will be selected from the tourney . So the players, most of them Indian, will give everything on court to grab a win,“ said Vibin M. George, former Indian counter-attacker.

Former Indian blocker M.T. Azeez, who has returned to the state squad this year, believes if the combination is right no one can stop them. “The camp held at Thrissur was fine and though a brief one, it helped us get fit and ready.

I have not played in India for about a year and it will be a chance for me to renew my old friendships at the nationals,“ said Azeez, who plays for a UAE-based team.

Kerala will take on Rajasthan in their first match on December 21.
