ather Ian Writes ..........

Every religion's self-understanding is that its origins, sources and teachings are revealed by an Authority that lies above and beyond the realms of ordi-nary human experience. Usually the revelations are vouchsafed to an individ-ual tasked with the responsibility then of disseminating the Divine Wisdom inthe first place by word of mouth. Over time, centuries in some cases, the teaching is systematized, codified and written down, becoming the body of teaching associated with a particular Religion or Faith. The enormous rever-ence accorded to the Koran by Muslims, and to the ceremonial scrolls of the Torah by Jews, to take but two examples, both confirm and reflect their self-understanding as 'people of the Book', and their scriptures as the 'Word of God'.

It is well known that the Old Testament of the Bible is shared in its entirety by Christians and Jews and in large part with Muslims. All these are ground-ed in what is known as the Abrahamic Faith. Only the New Testament is spe-cifically and exclusively Christian. The uniqueness of Christianity within this family of religions is that it is not the religion of a book but of a Person. For the orthodox - believing Christian the Word of God is not the book or the words written down within it, but rather He of whom the words are written.

S. John's Gospel speaks of Jesus the Christ, Who from the beginning was not only with God, but was God. He is described as the Word, Who in the full-ness of time took human flesh being born of the Virgin Mary and lived, taught, healed, was crucified, rose again and opened the pathway to God which had long been closed by man's sin. Man continues to have free will; he is always at liberty to accept, to doubt or to reject.

Given that we do have free will, it seems to me that all these three positions should be respected by those with a different view. Hysterical religious fun-damentalism as much as shrill militant atheism is obnoxious as well as point-less. Part of the difficulty is that many people who reject Christianity do not always know what they are rejecting. In many places the Church seems afraid to teach the Faith clearly and with conviction, replacing the Gospel with so-cial welfare and 'contemporary issues', or by interfering in politics (usually ineptly). If that is all the church has to offer, then it deserves to be sidelined.

(Continued from the previous page.)

Christmas is the fundamental building-block of Christianity because in the person of Christ, God 'broke through' into human history. That moment in history is brought into our present, into our midst, at Christ's Mass. So let's enjoy the feasting, the tinsel and everything we all love to do at Christmas. It's all because of an historical event which is also a present reality. The Christ is one of Jesus' titles and means Anointed One. Another is Emmanuel which means 'God with us'. That is the reality of Christmas.

Festival of Nine Lessons and CarolsThis enormously popular celebration takes place on Sunday, December 23rd at 6pm. Once again we will 'raise the roof' with the hearty singing of our best-loved carols interspersed with the sonorous words of Scripture foretell-ing and recounting Our Lord's birth. As many would agree, this is an annual event in Deal 'not to be missed'.

New Electoral Roll 2013Every six years parishes in the Church of England are required to compile a new Electoral Roll. The last year when this was done was 2007.

The new Electoral Roll has to be compiled in advance of the Annual Parish Meeting according to a specific timescale. Only those people whose names are on the Electoral Roll are eligible to vote at that meeting.

The Annual Parochial Church Meeting at S. Andrew's will be held this year on Tuesday 5th March. The preparation for the new Electoral Roll has to begin at least 56 days prior to that meeting, which is before the next issue of the Lantern.

If you are 16 or over, have been baptised and consider yourself to be a mem-ber of the Church of England (even if you are not very regular in your attend-ance at Church) and live in the Parish, then you can apply to join the Elec-toral Roll. If you live outside the parish but have attended S. Andrew's regu-larly for more than six months then you too are eligible to join the Electoral Roll.

Membership of the Electoral Roll does have a financial implication for S. Andrew's - the larger the number on the Roll the larger the sum that the par-ish has to pay to the Diocese. It is hoped, therefore, that members of the Elec-toral Roll will wish to contribute financially to S. Andrew's; but it must be emphasised that this is not a requirement of membership.

If you would like your name to appear on the Electoral Roll, then an apppli-cation form may be had from the church from the New Year, or you can ring our Church Warden, Peter Gibson, (01304380860) for one to be delivered.

Please note that the closing date for receipt of your application is Friday 1st February. Applications received after this date will be placed on the Elec-toral Roll but not until after the Annual Meeting, meaning that the applicant will not be eligible to vote at that meeting.

This is an awesome place! This is none other than the house of God,

and this is the gate of Heaven.

Hopefully, you noticed the coloured full page advertisement in last month’s Lantern for the Confraternity of the Blessed Sacrament’s 150th Anniversary Festival. As your District Superior I attended this at St. Alban’s Church, Hol-born, London. It was one of those Anglo-Catholic occasions with lots of cere-mony, first at a Solemn Concelebrated Mass and finishing with Benediction. The procession did not go around the streets due to the bad weather!

We are all engaged in injecting new life into this, the oldest devotional society in the Church of England. It was founded by Fr. Carter of Clewer, in Windsor, among others, to teach the doctrine of the Eucharistic Real Presence and prop-er preparation and reverence in receiving regular Holy Communion. The early members were often reviled and even persecuted because of their devotion and persistence.

The Eucharist is now at the heart of the Church’s worship. It is the principal service in most parishes on a Sunday and there is frequently a midweek or even daily celebration. The sacrament is also reserved for adoration and for communion of the sick. In a minority number of churches, services of Bene-diction are held to focus on the presence of Jesus Christ in the most Holy Sac-rament. Saint Andrew’s is one of those most fortune parishes where all this happens.

In his sermon, Bishop Roger Jupp, the Superior General of CBS, reminded us of two things. First, we must not take all this achievement for granted, but nourish and foster its growth. Secondly, the founders placed great emphasis on teaching about the true nature of the real presence in the Sacrament. One fears that in Holy Communion becoming the norm in our parishes (a good thing), it has not always been accompanied by sufficient teaching and under-standing,

In regenerating the local Ward of CBS in our parish, so that it can become a nucleus for others in this Diocese, we need to strengthen our membership and our teaching. We have gained some new members and we need more. Bene-diction is a good focus for our devotion and teaching. I am therefore asking all our members and those who wish to join to make a special effort to come to Evensong and Benediction on Sunday 16th December at 6.00 pm. There will be a sermon at this service and an opportunity for new members to be admitted. Should you wish to join then please speak to one of the clergy. Admission forms are at the back of the Church.

Feed my SheepIt was Sunday morning and time for church,And I knew where I should be;But as family and friends were coming for lunchMuch work was required of me.So I asked for Our Lord's forbearance:I knew He would understand.I told Him I was feeding His sheep,Thus trying to keep His command. Then a funny thought occurred to meAs I pondered on what we would eat:The aroma of roast meat pervaded the air-I was feeding a lamb to His sheep.

Something serious for young people. The Twelve Days of Christmas.

Everyone knows that Christmas Day is celebrated on 25th December. Not eve-ryone celebrates it as the Christ Mass, but most families have a jolly time of lots to eat and drink and giving each other presents. A lot of partying goes on before the day itself but it was not always so. Christmas began with Midnight Mass and the celebrations continued for twelve days. Twelfth Night on 5th Jan-uary is the Eve of the Epiphany when we commemorate the arrival of theThree Kings.

The four Sundays before Christmas are called Advent – Coming and is a sol-emn period of hope, preparation and fasting. The colour in Church is purple. At Midnight Mass the darkness is broken by rays of light and the colour for the next twelve days is gold. You can imagine that when Advent was kept by most people, they were overjoyed about the Birth - Nativity of Jesus and enjoyed the holidays of feasting and games.

Most of you will know the song The Twelve Days of Christmas, but what we cannot be sure about are the meanings behind the different objects each day, such as five golden rings and ten lords a- leaping. There may not be any deep significance but here is one set of ideas;

A partridge in a pear tree is JesusTwo turtle doves are the Old and New TestamentsThree French hens are the Three KingsFour calling birds are the Evangelists of the GospelsFive gold rings are the first five books of the Old Testament called the PentateuchSix geese a-laying are the days of CreationSeven swans are the seven gifts of the Holy SpiritEight maids a-milking are the BeatitudesNine ladies dancing are the nine fruits of the Holy SpiritTen lords a-leaping are the Ten CommandmentsEleven pipers piping are the eleven faithful ApostlesTwelve drummers drumming are the twelve points of the Apostles’ Creed.

Page 25: December 2012

Should you not know what some of these are, then that was the point of the song. It was to get children to find out and then remember them by sing the song! An early Christmas quiz?
