Looking for the perfect gift for the avid cy-clist in your family? The Bike Barn has some cool gift ideas.

It starts with the perfect toy to make your child the coolest kid in school. The Bike Barn has Havoc pro scooters that they can barely keep in stock, says sales person Geoff Prowse, as they are the biggest Christmas seller.

“Kids are absolutely crazy about them,” he said, adding they come in different colours and are customizable. “Basically do whatever you want to make it your own scooter. They are really popular. They are more popular on the skatepark than BMX bikes are.”

Prowse added they are almost a fashion accessory when kids take them to school and every kids wants them. The stunt trick scooters are made with sealed bearings and stainless steel that is heavy duty. They start at $169.90.

Garmin Edge 1000The live GPS mapping system is the “go-

to training tool for the hard-core road biker.” It can measure everything from heart rate ca-dence to the amount of watts riders are put-ting on their bike. It also has bluetooth to pair with a phone. It enables cyclists to live track themselves and friends while on rides. There is a segment to race your friends, even if they rode the day before. You can also save infor-mation. Prowse said this is great, especially if you are training for races.

“It’s really the ultimate training tool,” said Prowse, adding it comes with a heart rate monitor and a sensor for pedal revolutions.

Cyclists can also purchase map packs for North America and Europe, with a SIM card

required. That allows cyclists to have street maps laid out on screen. Prowse agreed that technology lovers will appreciate this.

“It looks like kind of a cool cell phone,” he said. “You just mount it to your handle bars.”

Electra Cruiser BikeThe Electra Cruiser Bike is designed to sit

on comfortably and be able to have your feet fl at on the ground when you want. There are several designs to choose from and large tires.

“It’s all about style and comfort at a pretty decent price,” said Prowse, adding that they start at $350. “There is something in that line of bikes for everyone. That makes it popular. Everyone wants to have a cool bike.”

The Electra website says that the only hard part about the bike is choosing which one you want. Electra, which launched 22 years ago, opened up the frames and moved the pedals forward and provide a relaxed seat angle. The changes also resulted in a “less clunky, more ergonomic ride” according to the website. People can choose an alloy or steel frame, single or multiple gears, and a variety of styles and accessories to suit them.

Endura Luminite Thermal Gloves

Those are a great gift just for anyone who has a family member riding in the snow or even shoveling.

“The nice thing about the cycling gloves is they are winter proof, they are wind proof,” said Prowse. “They are really warm but also light weight. Endura makes a re-ally good brand. They are paired with Thinsulate.”

The gloves are all around great for winter riding and cost $88.99.

Kurt Kinetic Road Machine

This is a great gift in the winter for cyclists to either do spin classes or indoor training in their basement. The bike can be mounted to it.

“Either ride the spin classes or watch a movie while riding their bike,” said Prowse. “It sort of does ev-erything. It’s a lot quieter than most others.”

It has a fl uid fi lled cham-ber with a turbine in it. The faster you pedal, the more resistance it builds.

“It’s exactly like riding on the road,” he said. “Only

thing to change the resis-tance are the gears.”

It also comes with a life-time warranty. If a problem arises with it, bring it to the bike shop and the broken

piece is replaced. It also comes in fl ashy green.

“Who doesn’t like fl ashy colors?”

The Kurt Kinetic can be purchased for $389.90.

Holiday hot toy list releasedSubmitted

Expect to see these items on the wish lists of thousands of Canadian kids this holiday season: action heroes, paint makers, robotic pets and more.

The annual Holiday Hot Toy List, features the 20 most popular toys for kids of all ages. Since the start of the year, Toys ’R’ Us have been busy tracking trends and new product releases worldwide to determine the hottest and most compelling toys to include on this year’s Holiday Hot Toy List.

“With so many exciting toys and hot trends in the market, these lists are sure to appeal to kids of various age groups and interests with different play patterns,” said Liz MacDonald, vice-president, marketing and store planning Toys ’R’ Us Canada.

Each toy passes the “kid test” by enlisting the expertise of 12-year-old Chief Play Offi-cer of Toys ’R’ Us, Canada, Alex Thorne.

“My job as the CPO is to help parents find the best toys for their kids. I play with and review the toys, and think about what is cool about each one on the list,” said Thorne. “I’ve given each toy on this list my stamp of ap-proval, and there are some that will also be on my personal holiday list this year, includ-ing Skylanders Trap Team and the LEGO Star Wars AT-AT. I know kids across Canada will be as excited about the toys on this list as I am.”

The holiday season is a joy-ous time of year dominated by family reunions and seasonal soirees.

And while kindness is a theme of the holiday season, this time of year can be especially unkind to personal budgets, many of which get stretched thin in the weeks between Thanks-giving and New Year’s Day.

Travel and shopping tend to do the most damage to budgets come the holiday season. But the holiday season does not have to be so harsh on personal bud-gets, especially for those men and women who employ a few tricks of the trade to lighten their financial burdens.

* Set spending limits. Many families, especially those that are very large, establish spend-ing limits with regard to how much each person can spend on gifts for their loved ones. Such limits still allow holiday cel-ebrants to exchange gifts with their family members, but lim-its help celebrants reign in their holiday spending as well.

No one wants to begin the new year with heaps of debt or an empty bank account.

* Share hosting duties. In addition to travel and shopping, hosting holiday parties requires a considerable financial com-mitment on the part of the host. Rather than forcing holiday hosts to shoulder that burden on their own, families can share the hosting duties, even if the party is still slated to take place at one person’s home.

Make the holiday dinner a potluck affair so holiday hosts don’t have to assume the cost of the entire meal on their own. Request family members bring certain items, asking one per-son to provide beverages for the night while another takes care of dessert.

Sharing such duties makes the cost of hosting a large holi-day dinner much more manage-able.

* Make your own decora-tions. Holiday decorations go a long way toward feeding the fes-tive atmosphere of the season. But store-bought decorations can be expensive. Instead of outsourcing your holiday deco-rating, make homemade decora-tions with materials purchased at a nearby arts and crafts store.

Gather the family together for a crafts night and enjoy

this time spent together during what’s typically a hectic time of year. Homemade decorations also create lasting memories, as you and your family can enjoy reflecting every holiday season for years to come.

* Start shopping early. One way to stretch your holiday shopping budget is to start shop-ping early. Though many holi-day shoppers have been given such advice, very few take it to heart. Shopping early affords you more time to find deals and comparison shop, and beginning your search for gifts early allows you to patiently wait for sales or other discounts that might not be available once the holiday sea-son hits full swing.

If you plan to purchase any big-ticket items well in advance of the holiday season, first con-firm the return policy, specifical-ly how long you have to return the gift, as you don’t want your loved one to end up with a gift they can’t return if necessary.

The holiday season finds many people stretching their budgets. But men and women can employ several strategies to save money while still enjoying a memorable and festive holiday season.

Celebrate and stay true to your budget

Families do not have to stretch their budgets to enjoy a festive and memorable holiday season.

The holidays are here and that means shoppers have started to stockpile gifts for those they love.

Although some people are gift-wrap gu-rus, there are many others who feel that their wrapping skills are lacking. Regardless, any-one can create delightful wrapped gifts with a little know-how.

PrepareThe first step to wrapping is to have all of

the supplies in one place. There are some peo-ple who have actually dedicated small rooms as gift-wrap stations. While you don’t have to go this far, find a large table and keep your tape, tags, paper, ribbon, scissor, pen, and other accessories nearby. Also, sort out the gifts according to recipient and have any gift receipts handy to wrap up with the gift.

Wrap at a time when there are no distrac-tions and you can devote your attention to the task at hand, like after children have gone to bed or during the day when no one is home.

Paper or Bags?A thicker, higher quality paper will make

wrapping go more smoothly. That’s because it will be less likely to tear on boxes or when you’re rolling out and cutting it.

Thicker paper means you’ll also be able to achieve more intricate folds and better creas-ing around boxes. It also may be more forgiv-able around oddly shaped items.

Gift bags are the go-to wrapping medium when you’re short on time or have items that are not easily wrapped with paper. Because they come in a variety of sizes — and even gi-ant plastic bags to contain large gifts — they

are often more convenient.

Other Tips* Buy neutral-patterned wrapping paper

that coordinates with other papers. This way if you run out of one type of paper you can stagger other pieces and make a collage of papers so there’s no waste.

* Use ribbon to dress up a gift and direct the eye away from any imperfections.

* Keep a stack of paper scraps and use it instead of tissue paper to fill in gift bags.

*Keep scissors sharp for clean cuts.* Pack smaller items or oddly shaped

things into a different container that is easier to wrap.

* Roll up clothing and place into a paper towel tube to turn the wrapping into a candy cane shaped gift.

Practice often makes perfect when it comes to wrapping gifts. Having the right paper, a few decorative supplies and some patience can ensure that gifts look festive this year.
