View from the Pew! Only four weeks to Christmas at the time of writ-ing. How well are we prepared? A visit to our Mince Pie and Coffee Morning, on Saturday 1st December, will make a good start to get us fo-cussed on the main event of the month! If you haven't mixed your pudding on "stir-up Sunday" - the last Sunday in November this year - then come and see if you can win one in our seasonal raffle, or indeed a Christmas cake if you can correctly guess the weight of it! You may win cinema tickets from our Advent Calendar game. Then there will be gifts to choose from the array of jewellery, scarves and bags or table arrangements to buy or order. Failing all that, console yourself with a warm mince pie and a fresh coffee or mulled wine and chat to your friends and neighbours. Don't forget to bring that raffle ticket attached to the flyer which is coming through your letterbox, to enter for the cycling voucher prize.

The following day, being the first Sun-day in Advent we celebrate by lighting the first Advent candle at our Family Service at 11am. The Posada will set off round the village that day and Jill will be pleased to hear from you if you would like to have the nativity box in your home for a day. Please ring her on 810157.

The church will be decorated by our flower ladies for the Carol Service on 16th December at 4.30. If you have foliage in your garden which we could use we would be very grate-ful. Please contact Hazel or Jill. There will be no 11 am ser-vice that day. Our Crib service on 23rd December at 4 pm (NOT Christmas Eve this year), although designed espe-cially for the children is a jolly and lively service for all the family. Jill will lead the fun and frolics of returning all the Posada's knitted characters to the crib and there will be

rattles and bells to shake during the hymns. Come and join in the fun.

On Christmas day our Eucharist is at 11 am, led by Derek Billings and we are grateful to Derek for giving up his time to help us on this special day. Our fifth Sunday service will be a Group Eucharist at 10 am at Spaldwick and all are welcome.

As regards the recent thefts from our money box, we re-ceived replies from all the officials concerned in handling the case including an apology from the police, admitting to a failure of communication on their part. They doubted the outcome would be any different if the full information had been available to the court as we only had concrete evi-dence on CCTV of thefts on two occasions. However, we were very disappointed that the newspaper failed to print the letters that we wrote to the editor stating our side of the story.

Looking back over the year we have done really well in get-ting through the first stage of our restoration project applica-tion to English Heritage for a repair grant. We will know by the end of December whether we have been successful. We owe grateful thanks to all those who have given so gen-erously in response to our appeal. It is never too late to make a donation as there is much to be done which is not covered by the grant, should we be lucky enough to get it. Please contact Hazel 810326 for further details.

We would also like to thank all those "friends" of All Saints who give so generously of their time, cleaning the church, mowing and tidying the churchyard, making and serving tea and cakes at our events, putting up gazebos and generally fetching and carrying. We couldn't do it all without you. Thank you also to Save All Saints, our unstinting supporters for all their energy and determination on our behalf.

We wish you all a very happy Christmas and a peaceful and healthy new year.

PARISH NEWS…

November 2012 Cllr Peter Downes announced that there is to be a charge for the supply of a second green waste bin.

Families who use more than one green bin will have to pay £40 for the privilege, although there could be concessions for those on certain welfare benefits. It was generally agreed that the plan could be less lucrative than expected when taking into consideration the numbers who will return their second bin rather than pay the charge, the num-bers of concessions that might apply and the admin-istration costs. Cllr Downes will be campaigning for the re-opening of the Brampton landfill site for the disposal of green waste which cannot be put into one bin.

Huntingdon’s Citizens’ Advice Bureau will close at the end of November when it runs out of funds. There will be no cover for the month of December. Funds may be available for January to March 2013, but it is not clear where the service might operate from as the current premises are to be closed as the service is wound down. There is no decision currently, as to which body will be appointed to operate the service from April 2013. In the absence of a Huntingdon service, people will be re-directed to Cambridge or Ely.

Grafham is at the top of the league in expressing an interest in improved broadband facilities. Over the whole county there are in excess of 20,000 signatures and a case will be presented to would-be suppliers to put in cabling in conjunction with government-backed schemes that will be inviting tenders. Cambridgeshire is

currently ahead of Suffolk and Norfolk in the scheme. Timings are as yet unknown.

Councillor Al Watson will be attending the council sur-gery on 1st December at the village hall.

The playing field in Grafham is now protected under the Queen Elizabeth II Fields in Trust Scheme. Fields in Trust is a national charity working to safeguard and support outdoor recreational spaces. If you want to know more you can get information from http://charities.asda.com/fields-in-trust

You might have heard that a very virulent disease affecting ash trees has been found in England, having caused wide-spread death of the Ash in Europe. For those of us who love trees and the English countryside, the presence of this disease is very sad.

However, you could be on the lookout for symptoms in Ash and if you see anything suspicious, you can report

your findings via the following websites: www.fera.defra.gov.uk www.forstry.gov.uk or

http://ashtag.org/ At this time of year Ash leaves do turn brown and wither and drop off.

The main symptoms to look for are lesions on the stems. Please do not handle the Ash and wash your boots before and after going into woods or the country-side.

The Parish Council has a vacancy created by the resig-nation of Tracy Lord. Please write to the clerk if you would like to apply to join the council. The date of the next Parish Council meeting is Tuesday 4th December 2012.

Much to our surprise the Lions Adventure Club has been running for three years now and as a result a number of members have had to leave as they have completed their maximum term for membership.

This has meant a reduction in the numbers of mem-bers on the waiting list and some vacancies because those on the waiting list are not yet old enough to par-ticipate.

The club was established in 2009 following fundrais-ing at Perry Fêtes and a partnership being estab-lished between Huntingdon Grafham Water Lions Club and Grafham Water Centre (GWC). The Lions Club acts as organisers and GWC provides the facilities, equipment and instructors.

The club gives local children the opportunity to experience a range of activities that they may otherwise have been unable to access, with the aim of developing personal and so-

cial skills. Effective learn-ing takes place in an environment of fun and enjoyment with experi-enced and skilled instructors.

The type of activities that will be experienced include, high and low ropes, archery, the Grafham Challenge, indoor climbing, orienteering, prob-

lem solving, mountain biking and pio-neering. These will take place during the winter months and in addition water

borne events such as sailing, canoeing, kayaking and windsurfing will be avail-able during the warmer months.

Funding for the club is raised at the Annual Fête held at the Wheatsheaf in Perry in conjunction with the local Lions Club. Participants are re-quired to make a contribution of £4 per session,

payable three sessions in advance.

Numbers that can attend the sessions are limited to 32, (two sessions of sixteen) and sessions will be held fort-nightly on Saturdays during school terms. Timings are 10.00 to 12.00 and 14.00 to 16.00. The age range that can attend is 8 to 13 years, i.e. children must be 8 to 13 years old at the beginning of September in the year they join, or already a member if 13. The start date was 14th November 2009 and the register has been full for most of this time.

The club is almost full and there is a waiting list for ad-mission, but should you be interested in finding out more, please telephone Lion Bernard Dable on 01480 810704 or e- mail [email protected]

LIONS ADVENTURE CLUB CELEBRATES 3rd BIRTHDAY

Letters to the Editors Letters to the Editors Letters to the Editors Letters to the Editors Dear EditorsDear EditorsDear EditorsDear Editors ………… Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service consultationCambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service consultationCambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service consultationCambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service consultation I am writing to inform you that a consultation between Cambridgeshire and Suffolk fire and rescue services is cur-rently taking place.

This is your opportunity to give your views on the two services collaborating further in the coming years, potentially up to merging together into one service for both areas. Your views will be included within the full business case, which is currently being put together and is likely to be presented to the Fire Authority and Suffolk County Council Cabinet in the New Year.

You may already be aware that Cambridgeshire and Suffolk have collaborated successfully in recent years, resulting in the first Combined Fire Control in the country. This set up of Combined Fire Control allowed both services to save significant sums of money annually and with further funding cuts expected in the coming years, it is essential that further opportunities to collaborate and potentially save money are fully explored.

The consultation pack and online feedback form is available on our website (http://www.cambsfire.gov.uk/6667.php). We are keen to receive as much feedback as possible so I would encourage you to let others know that this public consultation is taking place and to fill in the form yourselves and provide your honest opinions. The form does not ask for any personal information.

I would like to emphasise that there is still a lot of work to do, and that we will only proceed further if it is the right decision for the residents of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough.

Hard copies of the consultation pack and feedback form are available at libraries and fire stations around Cam-bridgeshire. If you would like a hard copy posted to you, contact the fire service on 01480 444500.

NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH Between 4pm on 9th November and 8am on 10th November, 400 litres of oil was drained /siphoned from a tank in a property near Model Farm.

Over the weekend of November 18th diesel was siphoned from the fuel tanks of five vehicles, by drilling three holes in the fuel tank. One vehicles was at the Wheat-sheaf pub, there were three at properties in Chichester Way and one in East Perry. If anyone has any further information they should call the police immediately.

I received further phone calls last month concern-ing the blue van parked in the single track road to Brampton and the police carried out further in-vestigations. It was shown that the occupants were in fact homeless and the van has now been moved on.

I have been advised that there has been an in-crease in rural burglaries and over the weekend

of 11th November, one occurred in Ellington.

Also, we must be aware not to leave packaging of electrical goods outside our property which alerts anyone of new goods on the premises.

Doorstep selling continues to be a problem and the Office of Fair Trading has published literature aimed at the over 70s which can be downloaded from: www.oft.gov.uk/doorstopselling

News from Spaldwick School As part of their literacy unit of work about how to write instructions the Blackbirds (Year 2) looked at recipes. They also read a story about stone soup, in which a man goes to a village and makes Magical Stone Soup for the villagers. The villagers say “It is the best soup we have ever tasted.” They believe that it is the magical qualities of the stone which makes the stone so delicious and don’t realise that the ingredients which the man asks the villagers to provide, are anything to do with the taste.

The children enjoyed the story and as a class, they created a recipe based on the same ideas but instead of having a magical stone, they had a pot blackbird. The children made their soup together, chopping, slicing, stirring the mixture and then tasting their final product. They agreed that the Blackbird soup was,

“The best soup we have ever tasted!”

Having written up their Blackbird soup recipe the children decid-ed to enter it into the East of England Soup competition. Fortu-nately, the recipe was short listed and some of Blackbirds class were invited to go and make the soup with ‘real chefs’ along with

some other schools who had entered.

The children showed the chef how to make Blackbird soup and took along with them the vital ingredient- The Pot Blackbird. They made their soup and tasted the en-tries from other schools. Then the judging took place, the soup was enjoyed but on this occasion the Blackbirds didn’t win.

However, it was a very good day out and the Blackbirds still think that their Blackbird soup is the best they have ever tasted.

Local Places of Interest Sam Malt

This map shows sites of local interest. Names like Black Finger Corner, Stunnel Bridge and Harts Hill were used on a daily basis. Harts Hill got its name as the Hart family had lived in the cottage there for many years, Annie Hart died in the cottage when I was a lad in the early 1950s.

Dec’12/Jan’13 11 Issue 99

Name: Riley, Age: 33, Profession: Fighter - girl One icy January evening I popped my head through the door of our Grafham village hall and immediately fell in love with what I saw. I don’t know what motivates you but I have always had this dream of becoming a martial artist. As a teenager I did not know anyone who was involved in the sport so instead of joining a local club I finished school and went off to Munich to get some experience in my first job.

After a few years I got so bored that I decided to become a full time singer in a rock band. We travelled the UK for four years and it was an awesome time. When I had to quit a few years later I lost everything: my big dream, my passion and my freedom.

I decided to move to England permanently (I‘m German) and quickly found an office job in St Neots. As you can imagine, it was not easy to go from supporting bands like the Scorpions to an-swering the phones all day. Even though I got a great promotion a year later I knew I was missing a passion in my life. This is when I found Grafham Tang Soo Do (TSD).

Not only did TSD give me the physical activity I was craving but I also met some amazing people who I am grateful to be calling my friends now. My instructor is Master Carter. He is a 6th Dan black belt and I am proud to be learning from one of the top instructors in Europe. We train at Grafham village hall because it has the right size for a small to medium sized class so that Master Carter can focus on the individual’s needs and abilities.

In July this year I and my partner Jim (who I met through TSD) travelled to the US to participate in the TSD World Championships. Jim got his first 1st place and I was so proud of him. In the past he had to put up with me coming home with Grand Champion titles and it was time for him to get his moment of fame.

TSD changed so many things in my life. I am now healthier, happier and stronger than ever before. I know this sounds a bit naf but I’m afraid it is true. I just love it! So, as I said in the beginning, I don’t know what your passion is: getting fit, learning self-defence or sharing a passion with your kids…whatever it is I would be curious to find out.

Thank you for giving me your time and maybe I will see you at the village hall on a Wednes-day evening. Tang Soo!
