View from the Pew Villagers will have heard the church bells ringing on a cou-ple of occasions recently. The first of these was following Suzanne's and Simon's wedding on a sunny Saturday after-noon at the end of May. Such a pretty colour Suzanne had chosen for her dress and the flower arrangers had matched

this with the summer flowers and bows which decorated the church. We wish the couple a long and happy marriage.

More recently the church has been alive with people preparing for the Flower Festival at the beginning of June. Jill was delighted that every windowsill and available space had been used to display the various ways of depicting the Festival theme of "Paintings." An easel and paints had been supplied for visitors to try their hand at a little artwork. Along the pews different coloured paint pots and brushes were adorned with flowers in their matching colours - a stroke of genius Jill! Thank you to all those who took part in making this a most interesting Festival with the range of paintings cleverly illustrated in flowers. Even our Rector Jason was persuaded to apply floristry scissors to some red roses and place them in the altar display depicting the 'tongues of fire' seen at Pentecost!

The teas served on both afternoons were well accepted. Thank you to everyone who supplied cakes and thank you to the ladies who served them.

The Festival closed on Sunday with Songs of Praise focussing on Pentecost. We were again delighted to welcome musicians from Brampton to accompany the singing. The bells were rung for the service and we are grateful to Geoff Burn, Ian Hayden and our own Diana for the charming sound. Something else which makes our vil-lage so special.

Please note: There will be no service at Grafham on 2nd July as previously advertised. This is because many of us will be attending the ordination of our new Curate Mike Bigg at Ely. The Haycraft

PARISH NEWS May 2017 The Annual Parish Assembly was held prior to the May Council meeting. There was no business presented by Parishioners.

The Chair presented his annual report and this will be available to view on the Grafham Village website.

The Biggs Charity Report was provided to the Coun-cil. The aim is still to close these two accounts and the Parish Council is supporting this view.

The Annual General Meeting of the Parish Council was convened immediately after the close of the Par-ish Assembly.

Cllrs Peter Downes and Patricia Jordan attended and advised that their monthly surgeries would now take place every other month beginning with the July sur-gery being followed by the September surgery.

The reports of the County and District Councillors will be available to view on the village website.

Cllr Philip Allingham was again elected unanimously to the office of Chair.

There is considerable concern over the safety of the footpaths in the village and surrounding area. Anoth-er footpath, through the church and down towards the water has been ploughed. The elusive notices which were displayed for a small moment in time are still “content unknown” and Buckden Parish Council have asked the Grafham PC if they have any knowledge about footpaths. We do not, and neither it seems does the County Council. However, councillors will be

trying to work with the County Council and the farmer to ensure that footpaths remain just that!

Grafham Beekeepers Association applied to the Council for funds to help them with equipment to set up. The Council was pleased to be able to grant them £350.

The annual safety report from RoSPA on the condi-tion of the playground and its equipment was consid-ered. Risk assessments varied from low to medi-um. Areas to be actioned as soon as possible by the Parish Council will be the cleaning of algae from vari-ous pieces of equipment and a repair to the exercise equipment to replace a missing seat will be referred to the manufacturer.

The Annual Report and Accounts were presented to the Council for approval and signing before being au-dited. Copies of the accounts and your rights in re-spect of the accounts will be available for inspection on the village website.

Thanks from the Council go to Sam Malt for his exper-tise and time in helping to assemble the new goal posts. Thank you Sam.

The date of the next meeting is 20th June 2017 at

7.30pm in the village hall. All are welcome.

Letters to the Editors Dear Editors … Grafham Water Triathlon It's quite a while since we read concerns about cyclists competing in Grafham Water triathlon events. They would race through Grafham to Ellington and back through Grafham - so there was a two way stream of athletes hell bent on cycling as fast as possible! Of course, many athletic events cause some disruption but I think the prob-lems were exacerbated by a lack of advance notice. This has all changed and I haven't heard any moans about recent events, including the half-ironman on 21st May.

The next cycling event is on Sunday August 6th; as a Grafham resident I'm proud that Grafham Water has been selected as one of three UK locations for triathletes to qualify to represent Great Britain. This is quite an honour and it will draw some of GB's finest competitors in all age-groups. Wouldn't it be wonderful if we could give them our support as they cycle through our village. I cannot be certain but I believe they will be passing through be-tween about 8:30am and 9:30am; it's not too long for us to be inconvenienced! Not really.

For information they start off with a 1500 metre swim - the equivalent of 60 lengths in a normal sized pool - fol-lowed by over 40K on the bike. Then, after about 2 hours or so, they are faced with a 10K run around the hilly slopes of Grafham Water; it's not for the faint of heart!

What are your news, views and comments? E-mail: [email protected] if you’d like your letter published in ‘Letters to the Editors.’ Please supply your name and address/email address but tell us if you’d prefer us not to print it in the Grafham Gossip. Thanks , Ed

Gary Nichols

Thank you so much to everyone who sponsored us to

walk around Grafham Water with the Grafham Water

Lions to raise money for charity. We have been

pledged a total of £550 which is absolutely fantastic

and we are so grateful to everyone for their generosity.

If you signed our sponsor forms but have not yet paid,

please pop into the shop as soon as you can. As any

of you who were out in the village on that day will

know, it was a very busy day as the Grafman triathlon

was taking place at the same time. We mostly man-

aged not to get caught up with them but a few choice

words were

uttered on a

couple of

occasions! Not

by us of course.

The weather was

glorious and it

was a very enjoy-

able day. We

managed to com-

plete the walk

without too many

squabbles!

Lunch and a bev-

erage or two in

the pub after-

wards was very

welcome.

There have, of course, been lots of activities taking

place in the village recently which all help to boost our

takings. Cricket on the playing field is always very prof-

itable when the sun shines and lots of ice creams and

cold drinks are consumed. Polling day is also good for

business and I did think perhaps it should come

around more often. You know what they say, “Be care-

ful what you wish for!”

We have recently been pleased to accept donations of

plants to sell in the shop. We have had tomato plants,

cucumber, peppers and English marigolds to name but

a few. We’ve also recently been given home grown

corn on the cob which sold very quickly. We try to sell

as much local produce as possible so do come and

see what we currently have. And if you grow veg or

have surplus plants we would be very happy to take

them off your hands.

Do you work from home? Are you aware that we stock

many things which would make the perfect lunch? So,

stop for half an hour, come and buy a fresh filled ba-

guette or samosa, sausage roll or pasty. We can make

you a cappuccino, hot chocolate or you may prefer a

cold drink; there’s always a good selection in our

fridge.

We look forward to seeing you soon and if you’d like to

get involved and can spare any time to volunteer in the

shop we would be most grateful.

July 2017 7 Issue 149

Grafham Cricket Club When does a defeat feel like a victory? No this

is not a psychological or philosophical paradox.

It was the sense of victory that Grafham CC felt,

after it had gone to play Hexton CC: located on

the Beds and Herts border, with eight players

and came within 11 runs of winning.

Hexton opened the batting and quickly lost their first

wicket, but they scored quickly throughout their innings,

because of the gaps left by only six men fielding in the

outfield. Nevertheless Hexton regularly lost wickets,

never truly being able to cope with the Grafham bowling.

Hexton’s top scoring batsman made 81, out to a perfect

leg break, with Jonathan Lederman being the pick of the

Grafham bowlers, taking 3 wkts for 15 runs off 4.5

overs. The Hexton innings finished on 197 all out.

Grafham’s reply was dogged and slow, faced with the

pacey and accurate bowling of the Hexton opening bow-

lers, who gave nothing away. After 20 overs Grafham

were 68 runs without loss, although well below the re-

quired run rate, there was a sense that Grafham was

winning the psychological battle. The unwritten rule is

that when a team turns up with 3 or 4 men short, it is the

11 man team who piles on the runs, and skittles the re-

duced team out for a handful of runs, but this was not

happening for Hexton. The Grafham openers wanted to

see what the Hexton change bowlers were like. Soon

Grafham were accelerating their run rate, so that by 30

overs Grafham were 131 without loss, requiring 66 off

the last ten overs for victory. Shortly after Fraser Hutton

was caught at point for a laudable 70, when the score

was 142. Great efforts were made by the remaining

Grafham batsman to reach the Hexton score, which was

still under threat until the final over. Jonathan Lederman

finished 74 not out, and Grafham completed their inning

on 185 for 4, a compelling game; that although ending in

defeat for Grafham, nevertheless had the smell

of a victory for Grafham.

The next game was at home to Kempston

Methodists, which began under threatening

skies, with Grafham opening the batting, ending

on 133 for 4, with interruptions for rain. When

tea was taken it started to rain heavily and the

game was abandoned.

The next game was also at home to Sandy CC, who

came with nine men, a sense of déjà vu with the Hexton

game came to mind; with Grafham having a team of

eleven. Grafham opened the batting, losing a quick

wicket, but a flamboyant Ovi (Imran Ansari), with lady

luck smiling, swash buckled himself with 4s and 6s to a

score of 81, with Jonathan Lederman playing the an-

chor: scoring 52. The other main scorer for Grafham

was Ben McCutcheon with 30 not out, leaving at the

close, the Grafham innings on 209 for 5.

Sandy’s initial reply started well, but 2 quick wickets by

Tom Chester, followed by a wicket from James Gould

had Sandy struggling. Then Sandy dug in with their

number 4 and 6 batsmen, scoring slowly at first, then

quickening their strike rate until they were ahead of the

run rate required to catch the Grafham score. The cap-

tain for the day Matt Chester, put himself on to bowl,

immediately took a wicket, and with his brother bowling

from the other end, took the remaining Sandy wickets,

leaving Sandy all out for 144, with Grafham winning by

65 runs. The Sandy innings turned out to be a Chester

bowling fest, with Tom taking 5 wkts for 26 off 7.2 overs,

and Matt 2 wkts for 7 runs off 3 overs.

Chris Dighton, Club Chairman

The legend of St Swithun (or Swithin) The name of Swithun is best known today for a rhyme known since Eliza-bethan times, which says that if it rains on St. Swithun's day, 15th July, it will rain for 40 days.

St Swithun's day if thou dost rain

For forty days it will remain

St Swithun's day if thou be fair

For forty days 'twill rain nae mare

A Buckinghamshire variation has:

If on St Swithun's day it really pours

You're better off to stay indoors.

St Swithun (or Swithin) was an Anglo-Saxon bishop at Winchester Cathe-dral from his consecration in October 853 until his death on 2nd July around AD 862. Swithun’s body was initially buried out of doors at his own request where it might be subject to the feet of passers-by and to the raindrops pouring from on high. In 971, it was decided to move his body to a new indoor shrine, and one theory traces the origin of the legend to a heavy shower on the day of the move when the saint marked his dis-pleasure towards those who were removing his remains.

Productivity is now a ‘thing’. A quick internet search will turn up blogs, pod-casts, individuals and organisations all trying to help you get the very most out of every minute of every day. Of course, you need to start with your ‘Morning Ritual’ – often a cup of green tea, some meditation and journaling followed by your MIT, or Most Important Tasks. It’s a good idea, I gath-er, if you have to eat a frog to do that first! This is productivity talk for getting the difficult/unpleasant tasks done first so that you feel a sense of accom-plishment and can clear the decks for other tasks. Whatever you do it should have been planned and scheduled and you should do all you can to minimise interruptions. After a full and productive day you re-view it, carry any uncompleted tasks over to the follow-ing day and check your diary for that day to prepare yourself mentally for it.

I’m all for being productive! I even do some of the things I’ve just mentioned, or variations on them but can I just give a shout out for rest. If you forget to rest – to have to re-creation time, you will soon stop being productive at all. This is where the biblical idea of Sab-bath comes in. It turns out that God wants us to rest now and then; so much so that he made it one of the Ten Commandments.

"Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy" is one of the Ten Commandments found in the Hebrew Bible. The full text of the commandment reads: Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labour, and do all your work, but the seventh day is

a Sabbath to the LORD your God.

There are a few things to note here about the Sab-bath:

Firstly, we are to “remember”. Sabbath literally means rest. “Remember the Sabbath day” means, “Don’t for-get to take a day off”.

Second, “Keep it holy”; something holy is set aside or set apart from everything else like it, so our Sabbath day should not resemble any other day – no quick check of the work email then! Specifically, we are to keep it “to the Lord”; In other words, the rest is not to be aimless rest, but God-centred rest. Attention is to be directed to God in a way that is more concentrated and steady than on ordinary days. Keep the day holy by keeping the focus on the holy God.

Third, the holy rest day should be one out of every seven: "Six days you shall labour, and do all your work; but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God." Work six, rest one. Work six, rest one. That's the pattern prescribed in the Ten Command-ments. Note it does not say that the Sabbath ("rest day") has to be the last day of the week or the first day of the week. The concept of weeks is not even men-tioned. The command is simply work six, rest one. Every seventh day should be a Sabbath.

The final, and perhaps most important, thing to note is that it’s a COMMANDMENT not a suggestion. It’s in the same paragraph as not committing idolatry, mur-der and blasphemy so I think we can assume God takes the Sabbath seriously. Maybe we should too!

Sabbath Rest

Memories of transactions at the door– decades before the internet

Entrepreneurial local business people are not a new thing. In my childhood the streets echoed to the sounds of delivery vehicles. With fewer cars, the vendors and their vehicles had little to compete with for our attention. We noticed them - with their distinctive logos.

The baker’s van, small and clean, probably an Austin or a Morris, delivered bread and cakes. He brought a selection from the van to the door in a large wicker bas-ket.

The bottled drinks man used a flat bed truck loaded with metal crates containing large returnable bottles of lemonade, orangeade, limeade, cherryade and Tizer. He came weekly in the summer and that clink of glass bottles against metal crates was distinctive.

The fish and chips van was a weekly event with stra-tegic roadside stops and we knew where he would be and at what time.

The fresh fish van came by with a selection of fish on ice. The range was limited but included eels.

Grocery delivery, an important service to those living out of town, farms for example. The van brought the customer’s regular weekly order and carried stock for special requests or impulse buys. The driver wore a brown overall (Ronnie Barker, Open All Hours style).

The ice cream man was without doubt a favourite. Ours had a tricycle with ice box and wares in the front. He rang his bell and that was all it took to get our atten-tion. He came during the school holidays, relying on the youngsters’ pester power to motivate mum for a pur-chase. He was replaced by the ice cream van (with Italian name) and that in turn was replaced by the ice cream, confectionery, tobacconist van with known stops at known times on known days of the week.

The delivery service found everywhere, was the milk-man. The early morning clink of glass on metal crates heralded the full cream milk - the perfect accompani-ment to corn flakes. In the early days, our milkman used a horse and cart. This was replaced by an electric vehicle with a man walking in front and eventually driv-en from a cab. David Cudby

Statue of Liberty

The Cunard QM2 to New York Tina Theodorou Last month we read how Tina, Terry and friends Marjorie and John travelled to New York on the QM2. Now read about their adventures in New York ...

The hotel

We were greeted very politely and assisted until we exited the Brooklyn Dock terminal in a taxi to our hotel. Our hotel was centrally located but, due to New York’s Fashion Week taking place, we ended up at the Holiday Inn. However, it was close to all that we wished to do and see, and the rooms were very big with two king size beds and a huge bathroom. What let it down badly was that there was no bar and no restaurant to speak of. We came down to a “plastic” breakfast each morning, which was not very pleasant. However, 30 yards from our hotel there were some superb restaurants and were delighted with the food and service!

We were also just short walk from Macey’s (which is amazing), Broadway and the buses for the harbour, boat trips and the Open Top Bus Tours.

Memorable dining

We dined out every evening and had memorable eve-nings in different restaurants. At “Ellen’s Stardust Diner” all the waiters and waitresses wait on you then pick up the microphone and sing. An experience not to be missed! “The View” restaurant, at the top of the Marriott Hotel on Broadway, rotates round as you are dining and you face a different view every few minutes. At night, this was breathtakingly beautiful. When the waiters asked us what we were doing in New York and we told them that we were celebrating significant birthdays and anniversaries, they bought two cakes lit with candles; which really did top the evening! At Keane’s restaurant, Terry had the best steak ever and the food was delight-ful. The meal and service in the TradeMark restaurant was also absolutely superb. So, we were never short of fine dining in New York with great service and lots of smiles!

We also had a superb meal the evening we visited Grand Central Station. The marble. the chandeliers and the opulence of this station is a must see, even if you do not dine there, you do need to take photographs!

The sights

Terry and I did the Empire State Building, again on a beautiful sunny day. We could see for miles from the top plat-form.

At the Rockefeller Centre and Shopping Plaza, after we finished shopping, Marjorie and I had lunch, and it was an extremely pleasant experience. The “men” went off to visit “The Intrepid” and the Space Shuttle!

We all went on the “Grays” Open Top Bus Tour and this is a good way to see more of a particular location, as you can hop off and on. The tickets they give you also allow you discounts on boat trips and entries to other special sights, espe-cially the museums in New York. We visited Ground Zero which was an emotion-al experience but you do need to do this if you are in New York, if only to pay your respects.

Another favourite event of mine, was taking the boat trip around Long Island and Ellis Island, getting so close to the Statue of Liberty. We had a beautiful sunny day and the commentator was very well informed on everything about New York. He made it so special for us with this knowledge, so I would strongly recommend the 3-hour boat trip!

The horse and carriage ride in Central Park, was an interesting experience and we were very glad we did that too! On a sun-ny day of 93 degrees, it was delightful sitting in an open horse carriage going through the famous Central Park.

There is so much to do and see; we had pre-booked a few things from the UK. If you go, my advice would be to look at what is available in advance and save some money by pre-booking be-fore you leave the UK!
