News from the EIS Library………………. P A G E 4

Dear EIS Families, December is National Stress-Free Family Holidays Month. Many people find it dif-ficult to unwind during this busy time of shopping, baking, working, and traveling, but reading even for just a few minutes, can be a great way to de-stress. Losing yourself in a good book helps to distract your mind, allowing you to enjoy both the book and the holiday season! Whether it’s humor, adventure, romance, or non-fiction, taking the time to read is a great gift to give yourself. I believe that our students have the necessary reading material they need to re-main calm and relaxed during the upcoming holidays as we recently held our fall Scholastic Book Fair. Our theme, Pirate Island: Get Hooked on a Book was fully em-braced by the students and staff. All students had the opportunity to preview the fair before making purchases and there was a large selection of age appropriate books and novelty items priced for every budget. There was even a contest to guess how many pieces of “gold” were in the container. We had two winners and they each received $10 in Scholastic bucks to be used at the fair. Thanks to the volunteers, parents, students, teachers, and administration for helping to make the fair a huge success. We look forward to hosting a bigger and better book fair in the spring. We also had our first AR reward celebration in the library. Students in grades 5-8 who made their grade level AR goal were invited to the library to make ice cream sundaes. Students were able to add lots of tasty toppings to their ice cream and there were prizes and raffles during the party. I am already looking forward to our next celebration. The goals for each grade level are listed below:

This month promises to be just as exciting as we continue to add even more books to our expanding library collection. We will also host some fun contests and givea-ways before leaving for our winter vacation. I am looking forward to what 2017 will bring to our library and students. Please have a safe and relaxing holiday season. Season’s Readings, Ms. Weeden

Students of the Month Each month, students from each grade level are nominated by the EIS staff for exhibiting our behav-ioral expectations and going above and beyond at our school. From these nominations, our staff members choose a boy and a girl for our “Student of the Month” for each grade level. For the month of November we recognized the following students as our PBIS Students of the Month: 5th Grade:

Haley Dunn- Haley is always pleasant to be around. She works hard and helps others without being asked. She is a joy to have in class.

Luke Orlando- Luke is a kind, considerate, and insightful student who works hard to make the class-

room setting a positive learning environment.

6th Grade:

Leroy Blue- Leroy demonstrates all of the characteristics of the Essex Way. He is responsible, re-spectful, and always ready.

Trinity Webster- Trinity works hard to stay focused and do her best in class. She pays attention and follows directions the first time they are given. Her work is always quality work.

7th Grade:

Kathleen Winters- Kathleen always works hard and doesn't complain. She is respectful to her peers and teachers. Kathleen is always willing to help others. She also shows great patience with other stu-dents. She is very polite, completes all work, and her work is always completed on time.

Tamajai Parrotte- Tamajai always comes prepared to class and ready to learn. He is persistent and

diligent in understanding things he is learning. Tamajai shows respect to his peers and teachers daily.

8th Grade:

Rasheed Jackson- He is always respectful, responsible, and ready for class. He not only takes care of his own work but also takes on the responsibility of helping other students who are not getting the con-cept to understand it.

Makayla Davis- She works hard to be successful in class every day. She tries her best even in the difficult times- No matter the task/assignment that is given, Makayla will give it her best. She is always behaving in class, never complains, and always has her work done.

Congratulations to our Students of the Month for November. We look forward to honoring these stu-dents at a special luncheon on November 30th at EIS.

Update From Our Instructional Coaches……. Let It Snow!

As the weather outside turns frightful, let’s take a look at the amazing snowflake…. Did you know that: Snowflakes can be categorized into six main types? Snowflakes are not frozen raindrops? The largest snowflake in the world was 15 inches wide and 8 inches thick ?!?

There is a famous snowflake that’s not even a real snowflake; it’s a fractal called a Koch snowflake. Here is an image of a Koch snowflake:

A Koch snowflake is a kind of fractal. Fractals are repeated images that form

very cool pictures and help scientists model things like beach erosion. Here’s

how to make a Koch snowflake:

It is easier to make a Koch snowflake using triangle grid paper. Ask your Math teacher or Mr.

Risley (the Math Coach) for triangle grid paper, or follow this link to print your own:

http://math.rice.edu/~lanius/images/triangle.gif

If you have an interest in other kinds of fractals, ask your Math teacher…if you are interested in

learning more about snowflakes, ask your Science or Reading teacher, or Ms. Tobey

(Instructional Coach) or Ms. Dunn (Literacy Coach)

Step One. Start with a large equilateral triangle

Step two. Divide one side of the triangle into three equal parts and remove the

middle section. Replace it with two lines the same length as the section you re-

moved. Do this to all three sides of the triangle.

Repeat step two over….

And over…..

A Spotlight on Our New Teachers! Each month in our newsletter we will spend time introducing our families to the new teachers we have at EIS. To accomplish this goal, some of our stu-dent authors will compose articles for you to read as a way to get better ac-quainted with our new faculty members. These student authors will spend time interview-ing our new teachers, then they will compose an article with information highlighting these faculty members. We hope you enjoy their compositions! Mr. CJ Balderson- Mr. Balderson taught at the high school for nine years. He was transferred from EHS and enjoys this school year so far. He teaches physical education. He has wanted to teach since the second semester of his first year of college. He went to Liberty University. He has taught at Lancaster Primary School and Essex High School. He grew up in Virginia. He used to play football, baseball, and he used to wrestle. He was born on September 19th. He loves to spend time with his wife and two daughters. We hope you get to know him!

Ms. Jennifer Schaefer- Do you know Ms. Schafer? She decided to become a teacher after serving a mission for her church. She grew a passion for teaching others and decided to go to school for it. She teaches all subject areas and takes care of the Special Education. The college she went to was VCU for her Bachelor’s Degree in Psy-chology in 2007. She also went to Mary Baldwin College. She didn’t play any sports until she was an adult. She never played on a team but she played with her friends at church for fun. California was the state she grew up in but she came to Virginia. She has been teaching for 4 years in Public Education. Glen Allen Elementary, Seven Pines Elementary, and Middlesex Elementary were the schools where she taught. She wanted to teach at EIS to make an impact in a community, and it was a great opportunity to grow as a teacher. The things that she wants us to know about her is she loves learning new things because it helps her grow as an educator. She strives every day to spark something in her students to help them be successful. We are glad that you are here and we hope that you have a good year.
