Prime Minister’s Message

People are often asked, “What is the most important piece of advice

that you could give to a high school student?” and the common answer is, “Get

involved”. However, they never specify what “getting involved” really means.

Contrary to popular belief, getting involved doesn’t have to be difficult or

embarrassing and it doesn’t necessarily mean that you are the captain of every

sports team or even the Prime Minister of the Student Parliament. Getting

involved is losing your voice at a pep rally or riding home on the bus drenched

in water and mud from Grade 9 day or even joining the club that you have a

passion for, although you couldn’t convince your friends to sign up with you.

Getting involved is putting in that little bit of effort to show how much you

truly love your school.

This advice is especially relevant to our new Grade 9 students. We

trust that you will quickly realize the immense opportunities that Riverside

bestows. From a variety of clubs, to sports teams and extracurricular activities,

there is a place for everyone to fit in and feel welcome. While you may be the

little fish in a big pond, we hope that you will put yourself out there and make

as many new friends and have as many experiences as possible in order to

maximize you high school experience to its full potential.

To the Grade 10’s and 11’s, you already have a couple years under

your belt, but this is your time to continue growing. Spend the rest of these few

years developing amazing friendships and memories that will last you a

lifetime. Also, include some time getting to know yourself. In a world where

time seems to race at an incredible speed, slow down and cherish each and

every moment. Don’t look back on the year with regrets but instead, stay

focused and give yourself that time to explore who you are as a person and get

to know the people around you.

Finally, to the Grade 12 students, we are almost there. Three and

soon to be four years have flown by so quickly and I feel as though it was just

yesterday that we were grade nines roaming through unknown territory. Now I

can confidently say that Riverside has prepared us to transition from Rebels, to

being the leaders of the next generation, wherever life may take us. While the

years may have flown by quickly, I am incredibly thankful for all of you, and

especially to our wonderful mentors and staff for leading the way and preparing

us for our future endeavours.

As the end of the year rapidly approaches, make it your goal to look

back on this past year and be proud of what you have achieved, how you were

able to get involved and how you made a difference. In a school with the motto

Rebels are Leaders, it can be difficult to distinguish yourself from the other 850

leadership students. But, don’t think that you’ll go unnoticed because no matter

who you are, we believe that you have that leadership capability in you, all you

have to do is prove us right.

On behalf of the 2017-2018 Student Parliament, we would like to

formally welcome you to another year filled with new experiences, adventures,

and hopefully a checklist full of goals that have finally been achieved. We look

forward to watching you grow as you develop the immense potential that we

know is in all of you. Let’s make this year, our year.

ATTENDANCE PROCEDURES The school is responsible for maintaining accurate attendance records. 1. If a student is absent from school, a parent/guardian must contact the school by that day. Messages can be left 24 hours a day at the Attendance Office: 519-948-4116 ext 1. If a call cannot be made, bring a note to the attendance office upon your arrival at school on the following day. Students with unverified absences will be deemed truant and progressive discipline will follow. 2. Students are responsible for completing missed work and informing their teachers in advance, when possible.

3. ASSEMBLIES: Students are required to attend school assemblies. SIGNING OUT OF SCHOOL 1. Students must sign out at the attendance office. 2. Bring a note from a parent/guardian to the office prior to 8:15 am. The student will be given a sign out slip to return to the teacher with the sign out time noted. 3. 9

LATE FOR SCHOOL POLICY If a student is late for the beginning of the school day, he/she will report to class. On the 5th late the student will be sent to the Attendance office for a late slip to gain admittance to class. Persistent lateness will result in progressive discipline up to and including contact with your parents, detentions, in-school withdrawals and possible suspension and/or removal from school. Repeated non-compliance with attendance and late procedures is defiance of school rules which are necessary to operate a safe and orderly school.

BEHAVIOUR MANAGEMENT Students are expected to be prepared for each and every class when they arrive at the classroom. Students are also expected to do all the work assigned and to behave properly in all classes. If a student disrupts the learning environment, he/she may be sent from the class to the Attendance Office. The student is required to immediately report to the Attendance Office when asked to leave class. The student must complete a student incident report form and wait to be seen by a vice principal. Return to the classroom will occur after consultation has occurred with the administration and the teacher.

PERSONAL COMMUNICATION DEVICE POLICY The GECDSB recognizes that personal communication and computing devices such as cellular phones, smartphones, laptops, netbooks or other electronic communication and computing devices have value and can be used effectively to support learning. However, within the confines of the school environment, their use has the potential to be disruptive when it undermines the integrity of an individual’s right to privacy; adversely affects the quality of teaching or learning; and/or interferes with the safe and efficient operation of the school. The following guidelines regarding personal communication and computing devices shall be adhered to at all times by students: 1) Use of personal communication and/or computing devices is permitted in the cafeteria and the halls for personal use during non-instructional time. They can only be used during instructional time when permitted and supervised by a staff member for educational purposes. Personal use during class time may result in discipline up to and including suspension. 2) Students who choose to bring personal communication and/or computing devices to school do so with the understanding that

Devices that are brought to school are the responsibility of the owner. The GECDSB and/or the school are not liable for damage, loss or theft of the device or data that is stored on the device.

Page 10: School Logo Here - Greater Essex County District School Board · involved in the Greater Essex County District School Board – students, parents or guardians, volunteers, visitors,

10

Devices that are brought to school, are to be off during instructional time unless approved by a staff member;

Devices may not be used at any time where individual privacy must be protected i.e. washroom, locker, change rooms

Unless permitted by a staff member, devices are not to be used during a curriculum assessment or evaluation (test or examination) and will result in a grade of zero if found using the device.

3) Students will be subject to school discipline, suspension, expulsion and/or police involvement, as per the school and board policy relative to the Code of Conduct, when:

a communication and/or computing device is used in such a way that disrespects another’s privacy;

a communication and/or computing device is used to bully or harass;

a communication and/or computing device is used, without staff permission, during a curriculum assessment or evaluation (test or examination).

4) Consequences for the inappropriate use of personal communication and computing devices by students shall be developed by each school consistent with the GECDSB and their school Code of Conduct and could include:

a verbal warning;

parent/guardian contact;

confiscation of communication device;

detention(s);

suspension(s);

expulsion;

referral to Police.

CODE OF STUDENT BEHAVIOUR This code of behaviour was developed to emphasize a feeling of self-worth and self-discipline in students. This code is used in conjunction with the GECDSB Safe School Policy to clearly outline standards and consequences. This code applies to all school-sponsored activities such as athletic events, field trips, dances and the like. These activities are an extension of the school and fall under this code. Physical, mental, sexual or racial abuse/harassment of any person will not be tolerated. The emphasis is on prevention. If you are having a problem with another student, speak to a teacher, or come see the Vice-Principal or Principal. Board policy will be applied in all cases.

Smoking is prohibited on school property (Smoke-Free Ontario Act). Students are not permitted to leave during or between classes (lunch excepted) to smoke. This also includes E-cigarettes and vapourizers.

11

school function will be suspended, and there may be Police involvement. Any reoccurrence will result in an escalation of consequences in conjunction with the Board’s progressive discipline policy.

Disrespect to people (language) or property (vandalism) will be dealt with by the Principal/Vice-Principal under Board policy and will result in progressive discipline which may include suspension and/or restitution for damages.

Please do not litter and remember to do your part to make our school and surrounding community clean and pleasant.

Demonstrate respect, co-operation and courtesy for all members of the Riverside school community.

Laser pointers are NOT allowed at school.

ELECTRONIC DEVICES - If you choose to bring any devices to school, you must adhere to the school and board policy on personal communication devices found on page 9 of this planner. Electronic devices such as personal phones, iPods, Bluetooth speakers, etc. are discouraged in hallways at any time during the school day as it may impede the flow of students and prevents students from hearing direct instructions. The school’s administration reserves the right to determine the acceptability of all electronic devices. The school is NOT responsible for lost or stolen items, including those in physical education classes and change rooms.

COMMUNICATION

If you have an emergency and you need to use the phone during class time please report to the office. The office phone is available for signing in and out and in case of emergencies.

COMPUTER POLICIES

The use of computer equipment in the school is a privilege. Improper use of this equipment in any way will result in the loss of computer privileges and possible removal from computer classes. For security reasons, never give your personal user ID and password to another student. Change your generic password at the start of the school year to prevent misuse. To receive access to computers, students must agree to the Acceptable Use Agreement developed by the Board of Education. Violation of the Acceptable Use Policy will result in the loss of all computer privileges, and other disciplinary actions will be taken as deemed appropriate.

DRESS CODE

School is reflective of a work environment and students are expected to dress in a responsible and respectful manner. The Dress Code has been developed by a committee of students, parents, and teachers and is reviewed annually. Students at Riverside Secondary School are expected to take pride in their appearance by dressing in a clean, neat, and appropriate fashion, conducive to an academic environment. 1. While the selection of clothing worn at school is the responsibility of parents and students, the school administration reserves the right of final decision concerning the appropriateness of dress and appearance for school. 2. Proper Riverside P.E. Uniforms must be worn in physical education classes. Specific situations such as labs, shops, etc. may require additional regulations which students will be informed of by their teachers. Students are expected to wear clothing (and jewelry) appropriate for school activities where appropriate is defined as:

Free of inappropriate language and/or graphics (weapons profanity; vulgarity; remarks/images which are discriminatory, derogatory, or offensively suggestive; advertising for products which are illegal for minors to purchase) including messages with a double meaning

The complete covering of undergarments

The covering of the torso

The length of shorts and/or skirts are to be of an appropriate length as determined by school administration

4. Torn or revealing clothing, pajama bottoms, sleeveless muscle shirts, tube tops, halter tops, backless tops, spaghetti straps, swim/beach attire, mesh or transparent clothing are not acceptable. 5. No hats, bandannas or other head coverings are to be worn in the school. Hats are to be left in your locker and worn outside only. Exceptions are made for religious purposes.

6. Sunglasses are not to be worn inside the school unless medically necessary. 7. For Health and Safety reasons shoes must be worn at all times.

13

PERSONAL ITEMS

1. Roller blades and skate boards are not to be used at school. When you arrive at school, store them in your locker. 2. Bicycles are not permitted inside the school building. Students are responsible to secure their bicycles in designated areas. Bicycles are not to be locked to fences or trees. 3. Jackets, backpacks and other school bags are not permitted in any classroom. This is a safety matter.

EVACUATION DRILLS

A fire and/or evacuation plan is posted in each room. Students should study the plan and become familiar with it. When the fire alarm sounds, students must leave the room in an orderly manner, remain with their class and report to their designated meeting spot outside. Running is not permitted. A tornado plan is placed in each classroom. Do not leave the school grounds during any of these situations. Attendance will be taken by the teacher at the designated meeting place. If you exit the building in an area not near your class you must report to the nearest teacher for attendance purposes.

Lockdown Procedure This is an emergency code designed to deal with situations where there is an intruder in the building. When the following message is broadcasted over the P.A. “THIS IS A LOCKDOWN” students are to remain in class until the all clear is given. If students are in the halls, they are to proceed quickly to the nearest supervised room. Students, who are outside Phys. Ed. classes are to remain outside and wait for instructions from their teacher. Students who are outside the school for any other reason, or are just arriving at school are to remain outside and wait for instructions from emergency response personnel.

Assessment and Evaluation Guidelines

At the beginning of each course, students will be provided with a Course Information Sheet (CIS) detailing the course material and assessments.

1) Learning Goals will be shared and Success Criteria co-constructed with students throughout the learning process so that students have a good understanding of the expectations.

2) Students will be given specific and timely descriptive feedback on a variety of assessments and evaluations.

3) Assignments for evaluation, tests and exams are to be completed whenever possible, under the supervision of a teacher.

Page 14: School Logo Here - Greater Essex County District School Board · involved in the Greater Essex County District School Board – students, parents or guardians, volunteers, visitors,

14

4) Academic dishonesty is unacceptable. Students must submit their own work for all assessments, even if they work in a group setting. Any student found cheating or plagiarizing on any assessment may receive a mark as low as zero, at the discretion of the teacher and in consultation with school administration.

5) Homework is an essential part of learning but will not be assessed for marks. Homework falls under the Student Learning Skills portion of the report card.

6) Group work is a valuable learning opportunity in which students will be assessed individually. No group marks will be applied to individual students.

7) The determination of a student’s grade will only be based on the assessment of curriculum expectations, and not on work habits, effort, attendance or behaviour.

8) Students cannot earn “Bonus Marks” for doing extra assignments. 9) Teachers may deduct marks for late assignments, as outlined below,

provided they have attempted at least one of the following interventions: a) Appropriate reminders are given to students leading up to the

due dates. b) A teacher-student conference is arranged to discuss a student’s

progress. c) There is consultation with the school administration by the

teacher. d) Teacher-parent conference or phone call is conducted.

10) Students must understand that deadlines are important and missing them can impact the final assignment mark:

a) Students will be informed, including those students who are absent on the day an assignment was issued, of all impending due dates.

b) Barring unforeseen circumstances, all students are expected to meet all reasonable timelines and deadlines set by the teacher for an assessment.

c) A student who does not meet a deadline may be penalized up to 10% of the assignment mark. A new reasonable deadline will be set by the teacher and communicated to the student and/or parent. If that new deadline is not met the teacher may deduct up to and including 50% of the assignment mark.

d) Teachers will use their professional judgement in determining the mark.

e) Students who ultimately do not complete assignments or fail to meet the above guidelines will be assigned a grade of zero for that assignment.

Page 15: School Logo Here - Greater Essex County District School Board · involved in the Greater Essex County District School Board – students, parents or guardians, volunteers, visitors,

15

11) Advanced notice of all assessments will be given to students whenever possible. The following Missed Tests/Assessment guidelines will apply:

a) Students who are truant on the day of an assessment, as determined by school administration, may receive a mark as low as zero. Please note that truancy is defined as an absence without legitimate reason.

b) Parents cannot give a student permission to miss an assessment; and similarly, students 18 years or older cannot give themselves permission to miss an assessment. These absences will be treated as truancies.

c) Medical notes may be requested by school administration only.

d) If a student was absent with a legitimate reason, as determined by the teacher and/or school administration, an appropriate time and place will be set for the student to complete the assessment without penalty. In some cases the student may receive a different version of the assessment.

e) Any student who cannot demonstrate that they have learned the curriculum expectations of an assessment may be assigned a mark of zero.

EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES POLICY

Extra-curricular programs are a privilege for students to enrich their school lives. Students who wish to participate in extra-curricular activities are subject to the expectations and standards outlined in the Greater Essex County District School Board policy and that of any policies, expectations and standards found within the governing sport bodies: WECSSAA, SWOSSAA and OFSAA. Attendance, behaviour and academics are considered when determining student eligibility in extra-curricular activities. School administration reserves the right to review the eligibility of any student. Students are also encouraged to refer to the WECSSA constitution to review eligibility. Students must be in attendance all day when playing a sport on the specified game day. Appointment slips/cards may be required to verify absences. Administration will make the final decision on student eligibility for extra-curricular activities.

EXAM/FINAL SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT POLICY

All Code of Conduct, Attendance, Behaviour and Textbook policies are in place during the entire exam schedule.

Students should be in the classroom at least 10 minutes before the examination starts. If a student arrives late, that student will only be allowed the remaining exam time. No additional time will be granted without office approval.

Textbooks MUST be returned before the exam.

SPARES, SUBJECT CHANGES

Spares: All grade 9, 10, and 11 students must take eight subjects and have no spares. Grade 12 students may have an unassigned period (spare); however, they must have a minimum of 23 credits and select enough credits to graduate. If the unassigned period is at any other time during the day the student may leave the property; however, it is the student’s responsibility to be on time for their next scheduled class.
