Thursday, August 1, 2019 Dear Friends in Christ, Greetings! The Sr. High missioner’s to Memphis have returned! It was a good week with a variety of experiences for us all. I hope you’ll mark your calendar for Sunday, August 25th at 10:00 am in the Wesley Center to hear mission adventure stories from our youth, adults, and their Director, Becca Nims. Those of you who attended the Kool Kool Luncheon this past week heard just a few stories already! I hurried back from Memphis to Cedar Rapids this past Saturday in time to join the Shifting Ground exhibit and video presentation at the Iowa Ceramics Center. All week long, artists from Portugal and Cedar Rapids were engaging some of our African members in storytelling through dialogue and reflections on memories, talents, and feelings of something of their past. They fostered each other’s imagination to create their individual Shifting Ground story into a clay sculpture. These became an exhibit and it was documented through video, public radio, and other media coverage. In September, the exhibit will be hosted at Mt. Mercy College and at St. Paul’s! Then on Sunday, we were blessed with the gifts of the Rev. Clint Twedt Ball preaching as part of our Kingdom Life series. We also hosted guest artist, Chris Carman (pictured top right), who shared his Assemblages, portraying moments in his life and the experience of grief. These stories from Clint and Chris where blessings to all of us who gathered to hear and to see. What stories are forming in you this summer? What stories are you telling? St. Paul’s has many stories to share whenever we are looking for the love and light of Christ in each other. These are stories worth telling. Grace & peace, Pastor Sherrie

Sculptures of Shifting GroundIn last week’s Outlook, we shared the news of the Shifting Ground art project hosted hereat St. Paul’s. Last Saturday, many of us gathered to see the sculptures created by ourAfrican brothers and sisters and celebrate our connections.

If you missed it, take heart! You have many ways to see what unfolded during our timetogether:

1. Shifting Ground website: Scroll down to view photos (under July 22-26) and a video(entitled Ground)

2. Iowa Public Radio story: Read the story of new Iowans exploring memory and home3. Exhibit at Mt. Mercy University, Janalyn Hanson White Gallery: September 3-25;

reception September 19 from 5-7 p.m.4. Exhibit at St. Paul’s: Dates to be announced

The Iowa Public Radio story focuses on our own Esther Mwamikazi. It says, in part:

“Esther is originally from the Democratic Republic of the Congo and has been in the U.S.for three years. In that time she says she’s taken great comfort in the biblical story ofNoah, who found safety and connection even while he weathered the storms thatdestroyed his home. This week Mwamikazi built her own ark.

‘The good story of Noah in the Bible is very, very important. The boat and the manypeople inside,’ she said as she described her piece. ‘It’s necessary…connected here inAmerica. The many people…’

Mwamikazi says she and her children have found their own community in Cedar Rapids,which they sought out for its diversity of immigrants and refugees. In Iowa she can onceagain speak with friends and neighbors in one of her many languages.”

Below, you’ll see Esther sculpting her creation and the finished ark.
