Our Team Dear Readers,I hope you are enjoying the quieter, slightly more laid back pace of

summer days in South Florida. Each year I find myself welcoming the break with open arms, and although eleven weeks seems like a long time to keep

the kids entertained, I realize that in what seems like a blink of the eye, Ill be busy checking homework and packing lunches again.

We live in the perfect place for a STAYcation! While some are traveling to a favorite vacation spot or perhaps venturing to somewhere new, others are taking pleasure in the glory of living in South Florida. Here we have the opportunity every day to enjoy what many people across the world would consider the ideal vacation destination. We can easily hop on a cruise without the added expense of a flight, enjoy a weekend escape to the Keys or even just a day trip to the beach where you can enjoy cloudless blue skies and our crystal clear ocean. You really do not have to venture too far from your own doorstep to enjoy the Summer, there are a myriad of fun places offering entertainment for any or all of the family. Check out the content of this issue to find some of the fine establishments and businesses geared to assist you in whatever your family or personal needs may be.

Please be sure to look through our events section, there are some amazing things going on around town over the next couple of months! For our athletes out there, check out some of the fun runs coming up. Perhaps encourage your child to take part in the Triathlon hosted by Davie PAL, it is tailored to fit each age group accordingly and is a fun challenge for the novice or the advanced young athlete. While you are out at the city events, look out for a Sports and Activities Directory photographer, we are out there capturing your memorable moments! Take a look on our Sports and Activities Directory smart phone APP to see hundreds of local residents out there enjoying our community. Who knows? You may already be there! While youre in the APP, check out all the great information on some of the best venues not only in our town, but from each of the cities in which we publish. Its a terrific resource always on hand while you are on the go.Its FREE! Give it a try, youll LOVE it!!!

Before we get back to folding uniforms, lets not forget that registration for many of the fall season sports, dance and other recreational activities will be starting in August/September. Now is the time to ask your child what they desire to do and get them enrolled, dont leave it till the last minute when we are already caught up in the homework wars. And of course, remember to get those health visits squared away, be sure to take a look through our Family Health directory to find some of the best qualified medical professionals in town.

I hope you enjoy this Back to School issue featuring all of your local schools updated information, including FCAT scores, letters from Broward County School Board members, articles from your schools, and tips on easing your child back into the school year.

Looking forward to seeing you around town.

    My very best to you,

HELLO DAVIE,As usual, numerous programs and activities are listed inside this issue of

Sports & Activities Directory for your summer enjoyment. Let me highlight a few.The Towns Annual 4th of July event will be outstanding as always. Starting at

3:00pm this year, there will be lots of family games and activities as well as food trucks, live music, free birthday cake and of course, the best fireworks in Broward

    County west of I-95.

Looking for a fall sports program for your child? Take a look at what Davie is offering for youth ages 3-15. Theres baseball for ages 5-12, cheerleading for ages 4-10, flag football for ages 5-14, soccer for ages 3-15 and smart start softball for ages 3-4. The Smart Start program is designed to teach the basic fundamentals of softball in new and innovative ways with sports equipment that allows children to feel comfortable. In addition, this program encourages parents to participate with the activities and drills that help children learn the fundamentals faster. In past issues, I have mentioned our pickle ball program at Pine Island Park, which is still well attended on Tuesday and Thursday nights and Saturday mornings. The game has become a favorite with adults of all ages in Davie. Its played very similar to tennis, but on a court one-third the size. Its easy to learn and the skills to play it can be mastered quickly. I personally think it would be a great game for the Towns youth, and so this summer, staff will be offering pickle ball classes for youth ages 8 and up.

If your child is looking for something other than the traditional youth sports programs offered, give the staff a call at (954) 327-3941 to find out more information on this new activity. You can also find information on other youth programs, including dance programs such as clogging, hip-hop, ballet, jazz and cheer, baton and martial arts. For adults looking to stay healthy or get healthier, there is jazzercise, which offers 14 classes a week or zumba that offers three classes a week at the Pine Island Multipurpose Center. Want to learn tennis? Davie has three tennis instructors that offer tennis lessons for all ages at Town Parks throughout the week. Youre sure to find a class that meets your busy schedule. Have you become a member of the Pine Island Fitness Center yet? Stop by and check out the renovated facility and the new fitness equipment. If you purchase a six (6) month or a twelve (12) month membership, you will also get free access to the swimming pool. That means you can take a rejuvenating swim after your workout or visit the pool anytime for recreational swimming.

Speaking of swimming, the Towns pools are open for your enjoyment. Whether you want to take a water fitness class, sign-up your child for swimming lessons or just stop by to enjoy a cool and refreshing swim, both Pine Island Park and Betty Booth Roberts pools are available to meet your swimming needs. While there, check out classes for scuba diving, aqua zumba, water aerobics, synchronized swimming and inner tube water polo. Looking to rent a facility for a wedding, family gathering or birthday party? Give the staff a call and see how easily and affordable it is to rent a room in one of our centers or a picnic shelter in one of our parks. As usual, the Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department has something for everyone. Take a look inside and see what the Town of Davie is offering to help make this summer one of your best yet.

As always, see you in the Parks!

Respectfully yours, Judy Paul, MayorTown of Davie

Hello, Im Commissioner Jamie Curran. This month Im proud to boast about several committed students of Cooper City High School for volunteering their efforts in making a difference in Cooper City. Specifi cally, our young adults

are promoting the following three events.STUDENTS TAKE FLIGHT IN VOLUNTEERING:

Cooper City High School Honor Flights is an organization with the goal of fundraising money to send World War II Veterans to visit the Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. Through their hard work and dedication, Jamie Cutler & Alyssa Demetriou became the co-chairs of Honor Flights for all of Broward County. The goal of Honor Flights is to motivate every Broward County school to raise $425 each to send one Veteran to visit the Memorial. Through the diligence and hard work of Jamie & Alyssa, Cooper City High School raised $1,400 which will send 3 Veterans to visit the World War II Memorial. The remaining $125 will be donated to the Honor Flights organization. Good job Jamie & Alyssa, you should be extremely proud of your accomplishment!

COOPER CITY HIGH SCHOOL HUNGER HEROS: Every fi ve seconds, a child dies from hunger! This year, Cooper City High School students, Persis & Alexis Bhadha, took part in a Feeding Children Everywhere packaging event. Feeding Children Everywhere is a charity that empowers and mobilizes people to assemble healthy meals for hungry children. As a club, Cooper City High School students planned, organized and executed fundraising activities to raise money for meals for hungry children. Numerous events were held to raise money and awareness about the growing hunger crisis.

On February 26, 2014, Cooper City High School hosted the Cooper City Hunger

Project; an inspiring packaging event where over 80 students, teachers, administrators, parents, City Offi cials and School Board Members came together to package 30,000 meals for hungry children.

In total, the Hunger Heroes of Cooper City raised $7,500 for Feeding Children Everywhere. This project has made an impact on the food aid recipients lives and has opened the eyes of many individuals in Cooper City. Thank you to Persis & Alexis Bhadha for their implementation of this project and their inspiration towards the less fortunate. Persis & Alexis; you are truly Cooper Citys Hunger Heroes!

RELAY FOR LIFE: CELEBRATE- REMEMBER- FIGHT BACK---- this is what Relay for Life celebrates. We CELEBRATE those members of our community that have survived their battle with cancer; we REMEMBER those who have lost their battle with cancer and ultimately FIGHT BACK to end cancer!

Relay for Life began in 1985 by one man, Dr. Gordy Klatt, a colorectal surgeon who wanted to show what a cancer patient goes through. That year, Dr. Klatt raised over $27,000 in one night. The next year, Relay for Life took off. Dr. Klatt is now in his own battle with cancer.

Logan Silverman, a sophomore at Cooper City High School, relays for his Mother. Logan challenges everyone to take fi ve dollars, ordinarily spent on coffee, lunch or a drink, and donate it to Relay for Life. He also encouraged everyone to attend the opening ceremony of the Davie/Cooper City Relay for Life at 4:00pm, on Saturday, April 5th at Cooper City High School. Logan is to be commended for his dedication and passion towards this most important cause.

I thank you for your support as I continue to serve as your Commissioner. Please feel free to contact me at any time with any questions or concerns you may have. My offi ce number is (954) 434-4300, Ext. #260.

And rememberKids + Sports = Success!
