1 Introduction

1.1 TheDataCiteConsortiumScholarlyresearchisproducingeverincreasingamountsofdigitalresearchdata,anditdependsondatatoverifyresearchfindings,createnewresearch,andsharefindings.Inthiscontext,whathasbeenmissinguntilrecently,isapersistentapproachtoaccess,identification,sharing,andreuseofdatasets.Toaddressthisneed,theDataCite1internationalconsortiumwasfoundedinlate2009withthesethreefundamentalgoals:

establisheasieraccesstoscientificresearchdataontheInternet, increaseacceptanceofresearchdataaslegitimate,citablecontributionstothescientific

record,and supportdataarchivingthatwillpermitresultstobeverifiedandrepurposedforfuture

study.

ThebenefitsprovidedbyDataCitearedomainagnosticandservescholarsinarangeofdisciplines,fromthesciences,socialsciencesandhumanities.

KeytotheDataCiteserviceistheconceptofapersistentidentifier.Apersistentidentifierisanassociationbetweenacharacterstringandanobject.Objectscanbefiles,partsoffiles,persons,organizations,abstractions,etc.DataCiteusesDigitalObjectIdentifiers(DOIs)2,atthepresenttimeandisinvestigatingtheuseofotheridentifierschemesinthefuture.Forthisreason,theMetadataKernelhasbeendesignedwithflexibilityandextensibilityinmind.

1.2 TheMetadataSchemaTheDataCiteMetadataSchemaisalistofcoremetadatapropertieschosenfortheaccurateandconsistentidentificationofdataforcitationandretrievalpurposes,alongwithrecommendeduseinstructions.Ataminimum,themandatorymetadataschemapropertiesmustbeprovidedatthetimeofidentifierregistration.Datacentersandothersubmittersmayalsochoosetousetheoptionalpropertiestoidentifytheirdatamoreclearly. ThismetadataschemacanfulfillseveralkeyfunctionsinsupportofthelargergoalsofDataCite.Primarilytheseare:

recommendingastandardcitationformatfordatasets,basedonasmallnumberofpropertiesrequiredforidentifierregistration;

providingthebasisforinteroperabilitywithotherdatamanagementschemas;

promotingdatasetdiscoverywithoptionalpropertiesallowingforflexibledescriptionoftheresource,includingitsrelationshiptootherresources;

and,layingthegroundworkforfutureservices(e.g.,discovery)throughtheuseofcontrolledtermsfrombothaDataCitevocabularyandexternalvocabulariesasapplicable.TheDataCitevocabularieswillbeadministeredbytheDataCiteMetadataSupervisorwhowillestablishandpublicizeproceduresforsubmittingchanges.

Thisversionofthemetadataschemahasbenefitedgreatlyfromthecommentsprovidedduringthecommunityfeedbackperiodinthesummerof2010.Manychangestoonumeroustolistherehavebeenmadeinresponsetothesuggestions.Afewofthemajoradaptationsincludeareductioninthenumberofcontrolledlistsandasimplificationofthosethatremain,aradicalalterationofthewaythataresourcestopicorsubjectcanbedescribed,andrequiringonlythosepropertiesneededtosupportresourcecitation.

Inaddition,theMetadataWorkingGrouphastwoprovisionsforopennessandfutureextensibilityoftheschema.Thefirstisthereleaseofasecondversionoftheschema,thisonebeinginaDublinCoreapplicationprofileformat.ThiswillbeimplementedbytheMetadataSupervisorinatimeframetobedetermined.ThesecondisthemaintenanceoftheDataCitecontrolledlistsinseparatefilesfromthemainschema.Thisapproachnotonlypromoteseaseofusebutalsofacilitatessharingthelistswiththelargercommunity.Theschemamaintenancemethodologyhasalreadybeenimplemented.

1.3 ANoteaboutDataCiteDOIregistrationTheDataCiteDOIregistrationprocesstreatsinformationabouttheresourcescurrentlocation(forexample,itsURL)separatefromallothermetadata.Thisissothatupdatestothecurrentlocationarestreamlinedforthebestpossibleresponsetimeandservice.

Additionally,oneofthemainpurposesofassigningDOInames(oranypersistentidentifier)istoseparatethelocationinformationfromanyothermetadataaboutaresource.Changeablelocationinformationisnotconsideredpartoftheresourcedescription.Oncearesourcehasbeenregisteredwithapersistentidentifier,theonlylocationinformationrelevantforthisresourcefromnowonisthatidentifier,e.g.,http://dx.doi.org/10.xx.

AnysubsequentURLupdateswouldaffectonlytheidentifier,notthemetadatarecord.

1.4 FinalThoughtsThismetadataschemawillbesuccessfulifitcanfulfillthefunctionslistedaboveinthesimplestmanner.Itishopedthattherecentchangesarestepsinthisdirection.Inthefullnessoftime,DataCitecompliantmetadatasubmissionsmayoriginatefromwidelydisparatelocations.Therefore,itishighlydesirablethattheschemabeeasytoimplement,beopentounderstanding,andbeabletoadapttothefullextentofacademicandresearchusecases.Theschemawillbejudgedintheshorttermaccordingtosomeofthesestandards,buttimewillintroducetherealtests.
