DataCite was formed in 2009 by 10 Libraries and Research Centers with a Mission: "Helping you find, access, and reuse data

The number has now grown to 17. In addition there are 5 associate members, including the Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information, the National Research Council of Thailand and Beijing Genomics Institute (BGI), so there is a presence in Asia.

DATACITEs primary methodology for achieving this mission: issuing DOIs (Digital Object Identifiers) for datasets.

The Joint Principles are virtually BAKED IN!

DataCite was founded in 2009 to increase acceptance of data as legitimate, citable contributions to the scientific record, among other objectives. DataCite has support for DOIs now. May support other persistent identifiers in the future.

ACCESS

Clientswill ensure that the URL assigned to the identifier provides users with the necessary information for making meaningful use of the data. Often this will be in the form of a landing page.

PERSISTENCE

Research data for which identifiers will be assigned must be located in data centres or repositories committed to persistence and maintenance.

DataCite is a big tent, working across disciplines and working to interoperate with emerging citation-related standards such as FundRef and ORCID. We support multiple approaches for citing dynamic datasets and follow with interest and engage when we can be of assistance.

CREDIT

Contributor propertyA repeating field, allows supply of name, role (or type), and name identifier information (ORCID).

EVIDENCE

Related identifierA repeating field, allows supply of related information, including antecedent or dependent data components, citing publications, additional metadata of any kind, including disciplinary-specific.

RelatedIdentifier with relationType= isPartOf or HasPart=isOriginalFormOf=isVariantFormOf=isIdenticalTo=HasMetadata=isCompiledBy=Compiles

VERSION & GRANULARITY

Decisions about version & granularity are up to the DataCite client, the custodian of the data. However, the schema provides full support for entry of Version subset information.

Version propertyAnd can associate another dataset usingRelatedIdentifier with relationType= isNewVersionOf or isPreviousVersionOfRelatedIdentifier with relationType= isPartOf or HasPart
