PROJECT STRATOS

Stratos I that flew in Kiruna, Sweden in 2009 was the first rocket designed and produced by DARE capable of reaching the stratosphere. Stratos I flew on an in-house developed solid rocket fuel com-bination of KNO3 and industrial sugar. According to radar and telemetry data, the rocket reached a height of 12.3km, whilst also collecting scientific data using electronics situated in the nose cone. This meant that Stratos I broke the European Amateur Rocket Altitude record [1]. Rem-nants of the flight capsule are still being displayed in the hall of the Electrical Engi-neering, Mathematics and Computer Sci-

ence (EWI) faculty at TU Delft.After the successful launch, the team was in a euphoric state. Straight after the flight capsule was retrieved and returned to Delft, the team started discussing a fol-low-up project. The team members knew that they had the capability to design, manufacture and launch rockets to ex-treme heights (on an international level), and this gave them such a confidence that DARE came up with a new and even big-ger challenge: becoming the first student team ever to reach space. A preliminary study concluded that with a higher specif-ic impulse and an increased performance of the propulsion system, it was possible

to reach the Kármán line – the boundary of space – at 100km altitude. Additional calculations showed that the solid rocket fuel used in Stratos I (Isp=120s) needed to make way for a type of fuel with a specific impulse of above 180s. Thus developing a new propulsion system and a new type of rocket fuel was essential.

It became clear that redeveloping a pro-pulsion system and reaching an altitude of 100km was more feasible if done step-wise. The team decided that the most reliable way to reach space was to first develop a new propulsion system and fly this system on a rocket half-way to space

Reaching space with a student-built rocket

In the spring of 2009 a team of 15 TU Delft students travelled to Kiruna, Sweden with

only one goal: to launch the rocket Stratos I they had been working on for 2 years to

an altitude of over 12km, thereby claiming the European Amateur Rocket Altitude

record. These students were part of Delft Aerospace Rocket Engineering (DARE), a

Dream Team of the TU Delft involved in research, development, manufacturing and

launching of rockets. However, this record-breaking launch was not a single project;

it was the first part of a larger endeavour of which the primary goal was to become

the first student team in the world to reach space with a student-built rocket.

Dream teamDare - Stratos II

All of the electronics used to control the Stratos II rocket, as

well as all other DARE rockets, are fully developed and built

by DARE members. The basic functionality required to con-

trol a rocket could be summarized as a straight forward set of

steps: igniting the engines, detecting launch and deploying a

parachute. One could achieve these functions using a simple

timer based controller. For most rockets however this method

would not suffice.

A significant challenge arises from making the electronics com-

pliant with the extreme forces and vibrations associated with

the launch of the rocket. An extra challenge for the electronics

in the Stratos II rocket results from the space-like conditions

at 50 kilometers altitude. In order to improve mission perfor-

mance, an event driven system is more suitable than a simple

timer based system. The Stratos II electronics are also to power

the various payloads on board, store generated payload data and

transmit telemetry data back to the ground station in real time.

The Stratos II flight computer will be equipped with a sensor kit

containing an inertial measurement unit, magnetic field sen-

sors, pressure sensors and temperature sensors. These sensors

Delft Aerospace Rocket Engineering (DARE) is a student organization at the TU Delft which focuses on

the design and production of rockets. The largest project within DARE is called Project Stratos. Within

this project, students aim to design, build and launch a rocket to at least 50 kilometers altitude, whilst

also servicing a multitude of payloads. After reaching the maximum altitude, the nosecone harboring all

of the electronics and payloads is to descend back to Earth using a parachute. This Stratos II rocket is

the successor to DARE’s Stratos I rocket, launched in 2009, which set the European altitude record for

amateur rocketry at 12.3 kilometer.

Met een mix van kaarsvet,koffiezoetjes, aluminium-poeder en lachgas als nogalongebruikelijk stuwstof ho-pen studenten van de TU-Delft dit najaar de STRA-

TOS II-raket naar een recordhoogte van 50 kilo-meter te brengen. Het relaas van een jongens-droom die werkelijkheid lijkt te worden.

Bouw je eigen raket

Voor de 22-jarige Rob Herm-sen, vierdejaars studentLucht- en Ruimtevaart, staathet al maanden vast: het oudeEuropese record van 12,5 kilo-meter van de STRATOS Iwordt verpulverd. Rob is’Head of Operations’ van de ra-ketvereniging DARE. De ne-gen leden zijn behoorlijk ze-ker van hun zaak. Afgelopenweek heeft de DHX-200 - desterkste raketmotor ooit ge-bouwd bij de TUDelft – een be-langrijke test in de TNO-bun-ker in Rijswijk doorstaan.

STRATOS II is in alle op-zichten een uniek project. Hetis de eerste raket die een we-tenschappelijke lading rich-ting stratopauze vervoert, eenGeigerteller die ruimtestra-ling meet en een antenne diede ESA wil gebruiken voor een– ooit - te bouwen Maanlander.

Maar vooral opmerkelijk isde ontwikkeling van een revo-lutionaire nieuwe brandstofvoor deze zes meter grote ’hy-bride’-raket. Hermsen:„Vloeibare brandstof, zoals deSpaceshuttle gebruikte, vielaf. Dat vergt uiterst gecompli-ceerde systemen. In ’86 faaldedit bij de Challenger met desa-streuze gevolgen. Vaste brand-stof was ook geen optie. Zo’nraket is feitelijk niets andersdan een kolossale vuurpijl. Nalancering ben je alle controlekwijt. Daarom een vaste stuw-stof, bestaande uit sorbitol, pa-raffine en aluminiumpoedermet 80 liter lachgas (N2O) alsoxidator. De SpaceShipTwovan Richard Branson en deDream Chaser die astronautennaar ISS moet brengen makenook gebruik van hybride aan-drijving. Maar er is een groot

team tegenaan loopt zijn legio.„Het is geen conceptcar diekun stilzetten om processen tetweaken, bij een raket moetenalle systemen vanaf het mo-ment van ontsteking feillooswerken. Omdat het een hybri-de is kunnen we de vlucht wel-iswaar in de lucht afbrekenmaar dan houd je niet meerover dan een berg metaal waaralleen de schroothandelaarnog een paar centen voorgeeft. En dan heb je over deeindfase van het project. Wezijn vanaf nul begonnen, meteen aluminium straalpijp diebij de eerste test onmiddellijksmolt. In onze zoektocht naareen hittebestendig alternatiefkwamen we uiteindelijk uit inPolen. Daar vonden we een be-drijf dat blokken grafiet le-vert. Op de draaibank hebbenwe uit zo’n brok een zelf ont-worpen straalpijp getoverd.Ook de software, lanceerin-richting en de tank voor hetlachgas - die bestand moestzijn tegen een druk van 100 at-mosfeer - en de verstuiver heb-ben we zelf ontworpen."

De test in de TNO-bunkerheeft wel een belangrijke pro-ductiefout aan het licht ge-bracht. Tijdens de 15 secondenbrandertest – op drie secondena de totale brandertijd - ont-stond een scheur in de mantelvan de verbrandingskamer(zie video). Na onderzoekbleek dat dit werd veroorzaaktdoordat bij de productie luchtwas opgesloten in de vastestuwstof. Dit gaf ruimte voorde hete gassen om een gat in demantel te branden.

Als dit probleem in getac-

■ HYBRIDEDe tussenvariant. Bestaat netals de vastebrandstofraket uiteen holle buis met daarin devaste brandstof. Alleen wordtde oxidator vanuit een apartetank door de holle buis metbrandstof gespoten. Hetsysteem is bijna net zo simpelals een vastebrandstofmotor,maar de stuwkracht is welregelbaar. Veel hybride motoren gebrui-ken lachgas (N2O)als oxida-tor. De brandstof in een hy-bride motor brandt met eenfactor 10 langzamer weg danin een vastebrandstofmotor.Dat is een probleem als demotor een hoge stuwkrachtmoet leveren.
