What sets us apart from other company is that we grow by leadership. Leadership doesnt always mean to lead teams. It also means to lead yourself, empowers individu- als so we can rise together, says Caecillia, who adds that she still regards herself as a village girl from Semarang, Central Java, who now plays a significant role in the country office of this behemoth company. Despite of having no formal background in Human Resources Caecillia studied clinical psychology at Gadjah Mada University in Yogyakarta and interned for two years at a mental institution in the United States it is clear that her devotion to this career path runs strongly in heir veins. Caecillia grew up in a rather academic and musical family. Her mother was an English and piano teacher. Growing in a classical music environment should have paved the way for her to choose a career down this path. Instead, she chose to go with human resources. In music, Im always curious to explore the creative notions that lead musicians to create musical masterpieces, she says. Its not just creativity, but also emotion. Thats why I studied psychology. And Ive always believed that psychology and human resources have a strong connection, especially in finding the perfect candidate profile for a specific role in a company. Directing and managing human resources in such a big company like GE Indonesia requires more than just skills and qualifications, but also a strong understand- ing of the companys culture. When asked about the corporate culture at GE Indonesia, Caecillia quoted her own HR chief, Susan Peters: Culture eats strategy for lunch meaning that despite any amount of strategy one draws up, without culture the company would not go anywhere, Caecillia explains. Perhaps this view is influenced not only by the strong culture that GE Indonesias employees are wrapped in, but also their journey within the company that allows them to identify core values. It is for this reason that Caecillia points out three core essences that represent the cultural value of the company. First is experiential, where talent is required to master the multiple aspects of the companys business. Second is collabo- ration, to further provide solutions to various departments. And finally, merit, where the company provides rewards for employees with outstanding performance. From the very beginning, we told our employee what to expect. We told them how to get there, and we give them rewards if they reach it, Caecillia says. There is also another unique aspect about the working environment at GE Indonesia. EmpoweringWorkersLikeGE CaecilliaAdinotoisGEIndonesiashumanresourceschief. GAPhoto We have to play fast, learn fast, and make sure we are shielded with knowledge. We have to educate as well as manage ourselves. Rather of having all staff across the board, the company put Caecillia on a kind of solo ops duty. In our company, people like me are called single contributors, she says. I dont have direct staff, I dont have any direct reports. But I manage teams, which are recruitment, compensations and benefits, and HR operations. Caecillia explains that the single contributor is the companys creed, whose main purpose is to empower talent through the assimilation of process, system and technology, which enables employees to be self-sufficient in handling their job roles. Most managers generally measure success through teams. Thats not what we do, Caecillia says. InGEIndonesia,weempowerindividu- alsthroughleadership.Everyoneisasingle contributorwhocollaborateswitheachother. Becauseofourdistinctivebusiness, weare mainlyfocusedonsinglecontributors, sothat wecanallrisetogether. Caecillia says one of the important roles of a human resources manager is to always promote education, besides developing talent and nurturing the companys culture, both inside and outside the organization. It is important to believe that everything is uncertain, not only in business but also in life in general, she says. Therefore, we need to mitigate everything through education. We have to play fast, learn fast, and make sure that we are shielded with knowledge. We have to educate as well as manage ourselves. This is what we do at GE Indonesia.
