School Board Meeting Thursday, 6 September 2018
LANGUAGES REPORT Nick Archbold, Japanese Teacher at Dalmain Primary, gave a presentation to the board on changes to the Languages curriculum. Currently, Japanese is taught from Year 3 at Dalmain. The newly introduced Western Australian version of the curriculum is more in depth and focuses on activity based learning which makes connections to other areas of learning. Mr Archbold raised the idea of the commencement of languages from a Pre-primary level. The board was invited to examine how a student’s day is structured and how much time is allocated to each learning area. Online language support materials are currently being developed by Mr Archbold and will shortly be available for parents to utilise with their children.
SCHOOL ENROLMENTS The board reviewed forecast student numbers and staffing for 2019. At this stage, current enrolment numbers will necessitate split classes across all year levels.
CONTRIBUTIONS AND CHARGES The board was given an overview of the Contributions and Charges Schedule for 2019. No significant changes are foreseen to the proposed costs other than minor alterations to book lists. Contributions will remain fixed at $60 per child and Dalmain will continue to work with OfficeMax for book and stationery orders. A copy of the schedule will be sent home to families during term four.
SCHOOL REVIEW Every state school is subject to a review every three years with Dalmain Primary coming up for review in term one next year. Dalmain will present a report addressing all the key objectives of the school’s business plan along with other key areas in the management of the school. Reviewers will read the report prior to coming out to the school and, as part of the review, will meet with staff, board members and parents.
NAPLAN NAPLAN results are expected to arrive around the 10 September.
The board discussed the readiness testing carried out for NAPLAN online earlier this term. This was reported to have gone extremely well and was positively received by students. Students enjoyed the trial online test and expressed a preference for keyboard to writing on paper. A positive outcome was that most students wrote more than in previous years and the use of headphones appeared to help students achieve greater focus. The students exhibited greater concentration and appeared more motivated to engage with NAPLAN. Between now and NAPLAN next year, students will have ample opportunities to familiarise themselves with the iPads and keyboards. Finally, a reminder that the school board exists to enable parents, teachers and community members to contribute and have a voice in the education provided for the students at the school. Please feel free to consult any parent members of the board; Bianca Galipo, Nick Wood, Justin Burt, Jane McIntyre and Andrew Morris if you have a topic you feel could be discussed at a board meeting.
R U OK? Day is a day dedicated to reminding everyone that any day is the day to ask; “Are you ok?”. The day is about inspiring people to start these conversations every day of the year.
TA 5 recognised R U OK? Day by beginning a series of Health lessons and activities to help students recognise when they, or their friends, need help with their mental health and the best way to get assistance.
Students in TA 5 were asked to nominate a friend or family member who has been there for them when they have been feeling low. Some of the reasons they gave for nominating people as a great friend included: 'He is always there for me when I have a case of the blues'; 'She knows when I'm not feeling good and will talk to me about it'; 'He listens to everything I say and lets me speak'; 'I trust her with my personal thoughts and feelings'.
