Theinterpretation system in the Heritage Centre was designed and upgraded by a localcompany, Martello Media.

THE LORETO COMMUNION GARDENby Second Class, Loreto Primary School, Dalkey

The second class Loreto girls gathered in the First Communion Garden for asingsong and a prayer. We wanted to thank God for a very special week that

we’ll always remember; the week we made our First Holy Communion.Way back on the 8th of October 2014 the garden story began. The teachers, moms and girlsof the communion classes came together to make this special colourful space. We decidedthe Communion Garden would have white, pink and lilac colours to celebrate us!Over the months, we weeded, planted bulbs, watered, deadheaded and secured thesweetpeas to bamboo. The garden gurus, Niamh Fitzsimons and Deirdre Breathnach, taught us the names of the bulbs we would plant; Cosmos, Candytuft, Allium, Sweetpea,Iris, Chrysanthemums, Nemesia, Tulips, Lavender, Osteospernum and Marguerites. We

sketched and paintedflowers to decorate theclass windows and createda collage garden sign. Now that we have madeour First Communion andthe Garden is complete,Mrs. Corkery wanted us totake a moment to celebrateour special week.We gathered in the gardenon Friday the 29th of Mayto sing ‘Queen of the May’,‘Go now in Peace’ and‘Together’.Two Marguerites wereplanted especially for ourteachers Ms. Quinn andMs. Howard. The white

daisies are to remindthem of us. Each one ofus tied a pink ribbon tothe tree in the garden tothank God for ourCommunion day.Our Peaceful Garden hasbrought us joy becauseeven if we are having avery busy day we canlook outside our classwindow, see our gardenand be happy. We takecare of the garden andGod takes care of us!

CRUISE CONCERNS: Amid much ongoingcontroversy, a planningapplication for a €18m singlecruise-berth facility by theDun Laoghaire HarbourCompany (DLHC) was due tohave been lodged to An BordPleanála in mid-June. Should the application begranted permission, evenlarger visitors than the visit inMay of the imposing, yetarguably elegant, cruise liner’Queen Mary 2, couldpotentially see for exampleRCI’s giant 154,000 tonnesFreedom’ class Independenceof the Seas almost occupy theharbour’s centre.Concerns surrounding theapplication have been raised

by the boating fraternity, local residents and political representatives alike on the potentialimpacts posed by cruiseships on the historic Victorian harbour. While, others see the meritsof boosting the local economy and that overall of the borough. The contentious issue of the 435m long jetty incorporating a berth for cruiseships like theFreedom’ class of 340m length overall (LOA) or even slightly longer ships has beenconfirmed by DLHC. The class are 38m wide with a 9m draught. Currently, deep-draftedcruiseships have to anchor off Dalkey shores requiring passengers to be tendered ashore tothe Coal Harbour’s cruise-landing pontoon.Prior to DLHC’s application to An Bord Pleanála, the Dublin Port Company lodged their€30m double cruise-berth terminal proposal also to the planning authority. It should behighlighted that while the capital may see the biggest cruiseships in the world withwhopping ‘Oasis’ class of 225,000 tonnes, that does not easily dismiss how stillconsiderably large the ‘Freedom’ class pose on Dun Laoghaire.Freedom cruiseships with 4,375 passengers are the largest ever to visit Ireland and only callto Cobh Cruise Terminal in County Cork. In the meantime, the 3,600 passenger RoyalPrincess of 142,000 tonnes made a maiden call off Dun Laoghaire (see photo, last issue) on12th May but cancelled a further two calls. The same number of calls were also cancelled by the 137,000 tonnes MSC Splendidawhich, like the ‘Royal’, switched instead to docking in Dublin Port. DLHC expressed‘dismay’ over the change of port having carried out preparations for an anticipated visit ofup to 3,200 passengers.

MSC Cruises claimed the switch to Dublin Port was due to high-tides and an opportunityfor guests to have extended shore-time. However, DLHC have confirmed that she is tofinally make a debut ‘anchorage’ call in August of this year. Interestingly, she is 10m widerthan the former Stena HSS Ferry of 40m.Together, the cancellations have reduced Dun Laoghaire’s record cruise season to a total of18 calls instead of the planned 22. This total could be further in doubt given PrincessCruises, operators of the ‘Royal’ whose original 9 scheduled calls is down to 6 for the restof the season and potential impact on businesses.Among the next callers is themajestic 312 guest five-mastedWind Surf, (well worth viewing!)when due at the harbour on 29thJune. Notably, the 143,000 tonnesBritannia, P&O Cruises’ largestever ship and built exclusively forthe UK market - and which made aSpring debut - is due offshore DunLaoghaire in July. TALLSHIPS:A pair of beautiful tallships undersail graced Dalkey waters on 28thMay. They were the Irish flaggedketch Spirit of Oysterhaven thatheaded down Dalkey Sound whileDutch rigged brig Morgenster had sailed from Gloucester Docks on the Severn, once atrading port with Dalkey. In fact, despite conflicting directions, both were bound for the annual Dublin ‘Riverfest’where a small gathering of tallships opened for visitors on the June Bank Holiday weekend. SWIMMING AROUND IRELAND:A duo of seasoned worldwide adventurers began a four-month swim around the entireisland of Ireland, having set off from Coliemore Harbour on 3 June. The intrepid pair, Maghnus Collins from Limerick and David Burns from Coleraine beganthe first 20km stretch of a gruelling 1,600km clockwise swim to be completed in Dublinduring September. They hope to raise funds for the RNLI and Gorta Africa.

DALKEY TIDY TOWN GRAFFITI UPDATE ❖❖

Just a short note to update you on our ongoing Graffiti Project in Dalkey. We have now completed presentations on Graffiti to the children in St Patricks, HaroldBoys and Loreto Schools and have been invited tomake this an annual programme which isencouraging. Judging by the response from theteachers and students, they appreciate the messagewhich we are trying to present. We also made a presentation to Irish Rail here in theHeritage Centre last month and had a very usefulmeeting. I have copied their Bob Love, Joy Murray,Tom Hayes, Liam Murphy and Jacqui Rogers above. Our concern is that the serious Graffiti damage nowvisible along the Dart line from Howth to Bray isleaking from the rail tracks and Stations into ourneighbourhoods. Irish Rail are facing a substantialfuture Graffiti removal cost and again it isencouraging to know that they see this as a priority.Thankfully, Irish Rail have now identified this as amajor concern and we hope to see details of theiraction plans this year. We will support them here inDalkey as best we can.Below you will see a slide which highlights theshocking annual costs involved in cleaning the Graffiti mess in some other countries. Fewseem to realise what the Taxpayer has to cover for this every year. At an annual contributionof just €490k, clearly Dublin is not as committed as some other cities as can be seen inmany downtown areas. A sum of about €30 million each year seems to be what is requiredelsewhere!!!Overall, our joint actions of our volunteers of the past year are proving to be effective eventhough we are cleaning off tags almost every day - 16 here in the past week ! We would liketo thank all who have given their support to make the improvement to date possible. Withthe School Holidays now on the horizon, the damage is likely to increase again and we areworking on a plan with DLRCC for this.Since launching our ADOPT MY STREET programme in Dalkey, we are also getting much

valued support from our neighbours. Over the pastthree months, we have seen a 54 per cent reductionover that same period last year. Two particularvandals are active at the moment using the tagsATN, ATW and FIK and we think we haveidentified the culprits and will pass the details toGarda Cathy Burke for action. As ever, any updateswhich you can provide will be much appreciated. Our good friend Shu Wai Tung at DLRCC isscheduled to move to other DLRCC activitiesshortly and will be replaced by Sinéad Riddick. ShuWai has done a great job over the past year insupporting our efforts and this we greatlyappreciate. He and I and Sinead have already done

As ever, your help in taking action againstthem will make an impact. These are some examples of the 61 tags removedduring the month of May in Dalkey.

It’s always nice to see red squirrels on Dalkey or Killiney Hills and this particular morningin late May we’d already got very excited after seeing one individual but it headed off in ahurry, throwing itself from branch to branch and eventually disappearing into the leafcanopy. We continued up the hill then Lucy spotted another red then realised there was apair together in a big larch tree, chasing each other around the trunk. We assembled adelighted little crowd around us as we pointed out the reds to them till the squirrels movedup into the denser branches. We made our way to the cafe, very happy with our sighting.I figured we’d filled our quota of squirrel spottings for the day and we couldn’t complainbut we thought we’d try again on our return journey so approached the same big larch. They were still there and as we watched one squirrel perched on the fork of a branch whilethe other circled the trunk, approached the sitting one then as we watched they actuallymated. Afterwards they crouched together against the trunk and the male rested a front pawon the female’s back in what looked like a very tender gesture. It was wonderful to witnessbut then Lucy drew my attention to something I hadn’t noticed. Neither of the squirrels hadearclips which meant they must be squirrels born last year and not previously captured andrecorded by the researchers who monitor the project, very encouraging news for the futureof red squirrels on the hill.I mentioned last month this is the twentieth year of the Dalkey Tern Project. The project hasexperienced various fortunes over the years and after initial great success in establishing abreeding colony of Roseate Terns, alongside the Common and Arctic terns already nestingthere, we had a succession of horrendous summers with north easterly storms washingaway tern chicks and eggs. After no roseates in 2013 a pair nested there last year but forreasons unknown the nest was abandoned with eggs still in it.Anyhow the arctic and common terns still come to nest on the rock so every year we takeout small stones for the birds to use as nest material, the previous year’s stones probablyhaving been washed down into pools and gulleys. The birds only arrived in the last week inMay and the weather had been too bad to get out so it was on the Saturday of the June BankHoliday we made plans to go out. Luckily for us Ken, the Dalkey Island ferryman, wasvery agreeable to take us out.

OVER25 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE

Dalkey July '15 18/6/15 3:05 am Page 16

Page 17: Dalkey July '15

In recent years we’d gone out in Stephen Newton, BirdWatch Ireland’s senior seabirdofficer’s inflatable. The boat, though handy for wedging in between rocks to land, had itsbest years well behind it and the fact it needed constant re inflating wasn’t too reassuring. So, in the comparative luxury of Ken’s boat with 60 kilos ofgravel, four new nest boxes, big chunks of stone to weighthem down with and the four of us we crossed over on alovely sunny morning.I’d seen the first terns there the previous Tuesday, alreadymating and courting, the male birds offering sandeels to thefemales. Stephen had predicted they might already haveeggs even after just five days and sure enough after landinghe had a quick scan and came back to tell us to be carefulwhere we stood since some birds had already laid. The eggswould stay warm in the sunshine for a while but we didn’twant to delay too long keeping the parent birds off theirclutches. We spread the gravel and weighed down the newboxes watched by a pair of curious seals swimming a fewyards off the rock and dozens of terns wheeling and callingoverhead. We kept spotting new clutches and a final count ofthe eggs revealed 25 nests. No roseates so far but hopefullythe commons and arctics will have a good season.BirdWatch South Dublin Branch members will be on hand with telescopes at the viewingarea at Coliemore for seabird watching every Tuesday in July from 6.30 to 8.00pm.The following day coming through the woods on Killiney Hill we came across anotherrecently fledged family of Treecreepers. When these delightful little birds leave the nestthey crouch motionless, often in bunched groups of four and five against tree trunks wherethe adults will bring food to them. There was still an active Treecreepers nest in a piece ofdead wood on a big beech tree where the parents were still bringing food but we’d cameacross at least two, possibly three other Treecreeper families whose young had already leftthe nest. Although very small birds and often overlooked as they move upward pressedagainst tree trunks they have lovely plumage, snow white on the underside and lovelymottled subtle browns on the back, perfect camouflage when the bird is against a tree bark.Their curved bill, designed to pick out insects and their eggs from tiny cracks on the tree, ispossibly the thinnest bill of any of our bird species. We were making our way to see if the other Treecreepers were bringing food to the nest inthe beech tree when we stopped short as the most distinct of bird calls echoed through thewoods, a cuckoo! We followed the calls but couldn’t see it. Almost every year a cuckooarrives and calls on Dalkey or Killiney Hill for just a day or two but I certainly wasn’texpecting to hear one this late, the last day of May. We headed on and were walking roundthe Hill above the Vico when on the top of Dalkey Hill that unmistakable, long tail andhawk like pointed wings silhouette of the cuckoo flew above the Monterey Pines. Last yearit had been calling near the same area not far from the aircraft beacon. Could it havethought that area of high ground was potentially somewhere a meadow pipit might nest andprovide a home for the cuckoo’s offspring? A couple of decades ago a meadow pipit diddisplay in the area, singing as it rose up beside the Telegraph Tower, but I don’t think it evernested and I haven’t seen any around there since but presumably the cuckoo instinctivelyknows the type of habitat its host species might nest in.The latest issue of the Irish Wildlife Trust’s quarterly magazine has a very disturbing reportwhich states that ‘scientists tracking badgers using GPS as part of ongoing TB vaccination trials

have inadvertently highlighted the number of badgers being kidnapped for badger baiting inwhich badgers are placed in a ring to be pitted against dogs as people watch for gory‘entertainment’. The badgers being monitored were transferred rapidly over large distancesindicating motorised transport before turning up dead.’ It’s not bad enough that the badgers aretorn apart by savage dogs but apparently the ‘baiters’ often ‘restrain or injure the badger(removing teeth and/or claws, cutting hindleg tendons) to minimise injury to the dogs’.

MICHAEL RYAN

Q. I suffer from dry patches of skin behind my elbows and knees which cansometimes be very red and sore. A friend mentioned I could haveEczema or Psoriasis. What do you think?

A. Eczema is an inflammatory condition which can affect any part of the skin, including the face, but the area’s that are most commonly affected are thejoints at the elbows and knees, as well as the wrists and neck. The skin in these areasbecomes red and dry, and itching is common. When a flare up is severe, the skin may bemoist and blistery.Because it is prone to drying out and is easily damaged, skin with eczema is more liable tobecome red and inflamed on contact with substances that are known to irritate or cause anallergic reaction. This can happen due to irritants (for example tobacco smoke, chemicals, soaps, shampoos, washing powders, cosmetics, toiletries, alcohol, astringents, andfragrances), allergens, food, stress, infections or teething in babies. It normally starts in the first few months of life but can develop in adulthood. Psoriasis occurs when the immune system rapidly produces new skin cells which cause theouter layers to thicken and results in flaky red patches to form on the elbows, knees andscalp but can affect any other parts of the body. Simply put the average person renews theirskin every 28-30 days while a person with psoriasis renews their skin every 2-3 days.Psoriasis is normally a condition which runs in families. It is not contagious or infectiousand a flare up may be triggered by infection, injury to the skin, certain medications andlifestyle factors. From what you have described it sounds as if you might be suffering from Eczema ratherthan Psoriasis but I would suggest calling to your local Pharmacist and asking them to take alook. They can also recommend appropriate treatment options for you.Treatment for eczema can involve short term use of steroids to clear the flare up but longterm management of eczema should be done using emollients to wash and moisturize theskin which then maintains a good skin barrier and helps to prevent a flare up. YourPharmacist will be able to discuss the many different types of emollients on the market andhow they should be used.If you have any questions you would like answered please email us [email protected] and put ‘Dalkey Newsletter’ in the message subject line.

Jerez De La Frontera Part 2This month’s issue brings us back to the impressiveLustau Bodega in Jerez De La Frontera, Spain. Thistraditional Bodega has thick white washed walls andhigh ceilings. Windows are high up on the wallspointing towards the cooling Pontiente winds, which help to maintain a cool temperature.Unfortunately, few of these traditional Bodegasremain and are being replaced by far lesspicturesque industrial buildings with air

conditioning. The old town in the heart of the city is far more beautiful than its industrialstyle surrounds. The production of Sherry is complicated to say the least. The grapes are fermented instainless steel vats but aged in oak barrels. The barrels are treated so the oak has no impacton the sherry inside and are used only to allow the transfer of oxygen. The barrels arestacked to make its famous system of maturation called the Solera system (see picture). Each barrel level is called a Criadera and the bottom barrel is the Solera. There can be asmany as fourteen Criaderas. The Solera (bottom barrel) is the finished product but not fullyemptied each time and is then filled by wine from the level above. The youngest wine(Saca) enters the top Criadera, this process of extraction from the Solera happens severaltimes in a year. It is impossible to tell the age of the resulting Sherry as it is a blend ofmany vintages, it is only possible to give an approximate age. Miguel our guide directed us to the tasting room after a full tour of their large Bodega. Iwas not sure what to expect as I only had bad memories of dry Sherries previously. Westarted with the driest- Amontillado “Los Arcos” Solera Reserva, it had a distinctive nuttyaroma and had a hint of smoke and raisins. Miguel recommended we try this Sherry withroasted almonds to appreciate it fully. I was not fully convinced that I had a taste for Sherryat this point but as we moved along the Sherries became sweeter and my palate moreaccepting. My favourite Sherry was Lustau’s “Moscatel Emilin”. It had more appealingdried fruit flavours but still held its nutty complexity. Miguel, a lover of the sweeterSherries himself suggested I pair this with blue cheese. And so after a lovely day at Lustau Iheaded out into the sunshine with a bottle of Moscatel Emilin underarm and made my wayto the nearest Cheese shop.
