Setting Up Wireless Connection

- Configure Access Point- Configure Laptop

What is Wireless Access Point?Wireless access point (AP or WAP) is specially configured node on wireless local area network (WLAN). Access point acts as a central transmitter and receiver of WLAN radio signals.

If your Access Point is still in the box:The physical setup for a wireless access point is pretty simple: You take it out of the box, put it on a shelf or on top of a bookcase near a network jack and a power outlet, plug in the power cable, and plug in the network cable.

What is SSID?An SSID is the name of a wireless local areanetwork (WLAN). All wireless devices on a WLAN must employ the same SSID in order to communicate with each other.

What is Wardriving?Wardriving, also called access point mapping, is the act of locating and possibly exploitingconnections to wireless local area networks while driving around a city or elsewhere.

Configuration Steps on Access Point1. Connect your laptop to the AP with a crossover Ethernet cable or access it from any other wired computer.2. Find the access point’s IP address.

It usually can be found on back of the device, in the device’s documentation, on Internet, or issuing ipconfig command on Windows command line, or netstat -nr |grep 'default’ on Mac terminal or from System Prefernces.

3. Open the browser. Type that address into the address bar of a browser. Configuration for an access point is usually done via a Web interface4. Log into the AP.

If this was the first time logging in, then I would have to login with default username and password, which can be found in the device’s documentation, on back of the device, or Internet. It is recommended that these default settings are changed.

5. Click on the Wireless tab on the left of the screen to go into Wireless configuration section.

Here I have three choices:- Wireless Network Setup Wizard (for those who are new to wireless networking and have never configured a wireless router before. The wizard will guide you through a few simple steps to get your wireless network up and running)- Add Wireless Device with WPS (wizard assists you in connecting your wireless device to your router with WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup)- Manual Wireless Network Setup (this is a manual setup option for advanced users and those who have configured a wireless router before

6. Choose whichever set up option you feel more comfortable. I chose to set it up with Wireless Network Setup Wizard. It is a two step procedure to get the AP ready: STEP 1 - Automatically assign a network key (Recommended) - Manually assign a network key (if I prefer to create my own key) - Here I can also select WPA (more secure) encryption instead of WEP - Here I can also change my Network Name (SSID)Click Next

• Here I chose automatically

• assigned network key and

• WPA settings for maximum

• security

STEP 2 - Set up is complete. Here I can see the summary of my settings. I need to write down Pre-shared Key that I will have to enter in my laptop when setting it for wireless connection. Save and close the browser.

7. I could also have done my configurations manually, which would have allowed me to make changes to:

- Wireless Network Name - 802.11 mode - Wireless channel - Visibility mode - Security mode

Configuration Steps on LaptopI will do my configurations on MacBook Pro.

1. Open System Preferences by going to Apple in the menu bar or to the dock and selecting System Preferences.

2. Open Network Preferences by clicking on the Network icon.

3. Select AirPort from the left side of the window. Make sure that AirPort is turned on. Click the Advanced button.

4. Open TCP/IP and select Using DHCP for obtaining IP address from the router automatically. Click OK.

5. Select Network Name from the list.

6. Enter Pre-shared Key from the Access Point (the one I previously wrote down). Click OK. And I am done. I should be able to get online now.

What to watch out:

- Make sure you have enabled one of the security modes (preferably WAP). Do not leave it open for your neighbors to use it. First of all, depending how much traffic your network gets, it might significantly slow down your connection. This happened to me when my wireless connection for whatever reason was open for anyone to use. It made my connection super slow. I was not surprised to see many people connected to my AP (I live in apartment). What is even more important is that it is not safe. Anybody can access to your network and get to your personal information. - Also watch for interference from cordless devices such as microwaves, cordless phones, etc. - If you set a password on your network yourself, make sure it is a long one, combination of numbers, symbols, upper and lower case letters.

I have done this procedure few times before and that is why the process of configuring and using a laptop over a wireless access point was easy and did not cause any problems to me.
