The folks behind SMASH opened the store because they knew Toronto was ready for an ambitious (and slightly off-kilter) source of well-picked, reclaimed, industrial and architectural materials. SMASH operaterates out of a large 4300 sq ft space which houses their showroom, a print studio, and design facilities in the Junction. It is an established, successful “go to” destination, and an incubator for new ideas.

Bookhou is an airy, light-filled shop and multidisciplinary studio that emphasizes natural handmade materials and small production pieces. Co-founded by John Booth and Arounna Khounnoraj, Bookhou is a family run business that believes in slow design with satchels and a range of other textile goods made one at a time, by hand, in their studio space. After more than 20 years of cutting and

teaching in top salons throughout the city, it was time for Leesa Berry to branch out on her own and focus on her specialty: a good haircut! The salon is a modern-day unisex barber parlour with exposed brick and mortar and a secret entrance to The Common for coffee while you wait in their sun-filled courtyard full of flowers and ivy in the summer. The focus is on the cut, whether curly or straight, short or long, male or female. Leesa’s philosophy is to work with what you’ve got using wet and dry-cutting techniques (and your fabulous hair).

The Museum of Contemporary Art has rapidly evolved under the leadership of Artistic Director/Curator David Liss. From modest beginnings in the Toronto Centre for the Arts, MOCCA has burgeoned into one of Canada’s leading art institutions and a fixture of the cultural landscape of Toronto and beyond. Discover the always intriguing exhibitions within the gallery and courtyard before its move from Queen Street West later in 2014. Keep your eyes open for striking artwork on the courtyard wall.

Dedicated to finding the best in independent contemporary craft, Kid Icarus is full of Canadian handmade goods from Vancouver to Halifax, with the majority of products coming from the neigbourhoods that make up the Greater Toronto Area. Their Print Department is the home of master screenprinters Michael Viglione and Bianca Bickmore, who have been churning out posters and art prints for over 12 years. Aside from printing flatstock, a variety of other materials have been seen leaving the studio such as skateboards, plastic boxes, and even metal beer towers.

When chef Simon Blackwell decided to make bread, he had only to look at his family for inspiration. In opening Blackbird, he is now the fourth generation of bakers since 1901 in Staffordshire, England. Following this tradition of small quality production, Blackbird Baking Co.’s rustic bakery and storefront is right at home in Kensington Market, bringing hand-formed breads, cakes and sandwiches daily to the community.

Davis Khounnoraj and Adam Mallory joined forces to create Crown Flora Studio in 2010 where they combine their love for botanicals and textiles in unique terrariums and handcrafted accessories, appealing to a wide range of customers from craft show goers to some of Toronto’s well-known store fronts.
