MARYLAND HISTORICAL TRUST WORKSHEET
NOMINATION FORM for the
D-51

NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES, NATIONAL PARKS SERVICE
l8J Altered 0 Uncltered 0 Moved f&:I Original Site DESCRIBE THE PRESENT~ ~D ORIGINAL (If mown) PHYSICAL APPEARANCE
The house consists of a central brick portion which is the earliest of the structure now standing. It is two bays long and has the steepest 'A' roof in the county. A single dormer lights the room on the second story on each side of the roof. The fenestration has been altered since it was constructed. Originally it had only a door and single window on each facade, but the door on the southwest facade has been bricked in and a newer window installed (c. 1800~. The rear facade still retains both original apertures plus another window introduced at the same time as the other remodeling.
Jarvis Hill is built on the highest spot in the Neck District and boasts a cellar. From evidence in the cel~ar, there appears to have been another section to the house prior to the construction of the two story wing.
It would seem that both the extensions were built at the same time. On the northwest side of the house is a continuation of the brick section, also with two bays on the first story and a doI'IIler above. There was no chimney in this part, the chimney rises in the brick section and towers above the roof.
The two story wing is three bays long and two bays deep. It is unusual in having a brick first story with exterior chimneys having free-stand stacks above the second floor. It retains much of the original beaded weatherboard and a Victorian porch.
The interior of the house consists of townhouse plan in the two story part with a single room in each of the other parts. Trim is plain and the mantels are missing. Between the two parlors is a double door. The stair is located in the back portion of the hall and interestingly has a newel post extending from the first story to the attic.
The brick portion had received a very elegant treatment in the Federal period with massive mantle having tapered pilasters, the likes of which have not been seen in the area. Unfortunately this unusual mantel has been removed, as has much of the trim.
In the last room is an enclosed stair to the room above. On the second story the trim is simple with the exception of the oldest room. The walls were sheathed with vertical beaded boards and were later covered with plaster. There is a small fireplace with segmental arch. In the closet is the frame to the fo1'Iller exterior gable window.
Jarvis Hill is one of the houses chosen in 1971 for recording by a joint project sponsored by the Maryland Historical Trust and the St. Mary's City Commission. From the investigation of this house it was determined that the brick portion of the house closely resembled the brick part of Elsing. The house is one of the most frequently cited buildings in the county as being a significant structure in the history of the county, however, nothing has been done to maintain the structure.
