What is a Cyclotron?- It is a device that accelerates charged particles such as protons, deutrons,
particles to very high energies.
- Types of cyclotron:
- How does it work:- A charged particle can be accelerated to very high energies by making it
pass through a moderate electric field multiple times.
- Main internal components of cyclotron:
- Ion source, • Produces particles to be accelerated,- Magnet, • Keeps particles on a circular motion,- Radiofrequency system, • Accelerated beam,- Extraction system, • Guides particles out of the cyclotron,- Vacuum system,- Cooling system,- Diagnostics (beam probe)
- Main external components of cyclotron:• Quadrupoles, • Steering magnet,• Beam stop, • Beam viewers,
• Signals pickup elements, • Collimator,
- What is a hot cell?- It is a compartment made of lead that is thick enough to shield 511 kev pho-
tons. It is also used to house PET radiotracer synthesizers. In addition, there are class A dispensing unit in a hot cell.
1. Linear accelerators:Accelerate particles in a straight line.
2. Cyclotrons:Accelerate particles along an outward spi-ral path.
3. Synchrotrons:Cyclic accelerators that send the particles into a closed-loop path. PET
