A big pecan tree came down and totaled two of their vehicles and damaged the other two. Their daughter Melodie’s car was real- ly smashed big time. Pecan, cedar and Bradford pear trees are the ones that I’ve heard that were damaged the most. It’s gonna be a lean pecan season here this year. Sympathy Annie Frances Rose Willis went home to be with Jesus and her husband of 56 years, Earl Willis, July 7 at Pruitt Health Care Center, with her family by her side. Her funeral was a celebration of her life July 11 at Lighthouse Chapel and as the family entered they played “Christians Don’t Die” sung by the Lighthouse Trio. Annie had been a member of that trio so she even sang at her own funeral. The Grace Holiness Trio sang “Heaven For Me” and Bill Stone, a professional opera singer sang “How Great Thou Art” with his wife Bonnie play- ing the piano. Former pastor the Rev. Dan Parker preached and told several funny Harkers Island stories. The Rev. Ricky Rose also officiated and inter- ment followed at Vergie Mae Cemetery. She is survived by two daugh- ters, Sherry Hamilton and hus- band Richard of Gloucester and Edwina Willis and Frank Noe of Morehead City; special neph- ew, Joe Willis of Lilburn, Ga.; three grandsons, Kevin Guthrie, Otway, Neil Brown, Gloucester, Benjamin Guthrie, Beaufort; five great-grandchildren, Nadia, Onesty, Kyra, Hayley, and Bentley; and four sisters, Nova Doris Smith, Jacksonville, Louise Golden, Straits, Sidney Richardson and Betty Jean Gillikin, both of Otway. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, Edwin and Lela Rose. Our deepest sympathy to the family of Guy W. Lewis Jr. who passed away July 12 at Cherry Point Bay Nursing Home. He is survived by his life compan- ion, Charlene Willis; son, Jared Willis; daughter, Nicole Dudley and husband Scott; grand- daughter, Kendalyn; grandson, Christopher Gaskill; sisters, Judith Golden, Kay Willis and Laura Lewis, all of Smyrna and Jeanna Potter of Gloucester; also many nieces and nephews. I think we all knew his sisters and our kids went to school with his nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother, Nora Lewis; father, Guy W. Lewis; sisters, Gloria Culpepper and Anna Burke; nephews, Edward “Rebel” Gibbs and Brian Culpepper; and niece, Darla Capalbo. The family will have a visitation at a later date. Condolences also to the fam- ily of Aileen Player Newkirk who passed away peacefully at home July 12. Her funeral was held July 16 at Marshallberg Baptist Church with Rev. Lee officiating. Burial followed in Victoria Cemetery. She is sur- vived by two sons, Arthur Craig Newkirk of the home and James Edward Newkirk of Pensacola, Fla.; brother, Edward Player of Aiken, S.C.; two sisters, Bonnie Hendrick of Conway, S.C., and Georgette Wilson of Awendaw, S.C.; sister-in-law, Jenny Williamson of Marshallberg; two grandchildren, Lindsay Nicole Newkirk and Anthony Nathaniel Newkirk; and one great-grand- child, McKenna Newkirk. Again a lot of us knew Aileen because her children grew up with ours. Come ‘n’ go There are a lot of folks all excited that 7-month-old Jaelyn Grace Beachem and her folks, Brittany and Michael Beachem, arrived in Carteret County July 15 for a visit and to meet some of her family that haven’t seen the infant yet. Michael is serving our country and is stationed at Kirtland Air Force Base, Albuquerque, N.M. They’ll be visiting grandparents Terrena and Kevin Foley and Candi and Eddie Beachem and great-grandparents, Iris and Vance Gillikin, Alice and Roland Lewis, Helen and Kevin Foley right here in Otway and Gloucester and may even get to see great-grandma and great-grandpa Beachem who live near Wilmington. Jaelyn will be dedicated at the morning worship service at Marshallberg Baptist Church today. Glenda Gillikin, Bettie, and her family went to Jefferson for a relaxing vacation July 10-13. They visited Tweetsie Railroad, Grandfather Mountain, canoe- ing down the New River, visited Blowing Rock, Banner Elk, Boone and downtown West Jefferson. Making the trip were Curtis and Katrina Gillikin and their daugh- ters Emily Gillikin and Michelle and Mark Quillen and their two children, Madison and Mason; Dusty Quillen, Laurana Gillikin, Jackie Smith with her grandson Cole Smith, Rhonda Gillikin Dixon with her two children Chris Dixon and Danielle and Jamie Gillikin with their daugh- ter, Taylor. The evenings were filled with seafood dinners, steaks on the grill, corn hole games, fire- works and outdoor fireplace with roasted s’mores. Debbie and Robbie Barber and their son Ellis and daughter, Hannah Barber Cox, all of Waco, Texas, visited Helen and David Charles Willis, Bette Gillikin, Dale Gillikin and Dan Smith, July 10-12. It was a short visit but they had to get back so that Robbie, a Scout leader and Ellis, a Boy Scout, could fly to the Bahamas with another leader and 10 Scouts. They’ll be on a sailboat with a captain and they’ll learn about sails, ropes and may even get to scuba dive and go snorkeling. Otway Fire Department Otway Fire and Rescue held their regular monthly meeting July 14 conducted by Randall Stephens. Officers that were elected last month and were pres- ent at this meeting were installed. Birthdays for this quarter were recognized and cake and ice cream were served. It was report- ed that the Bloodmobile that was July 11 did not reach the quota of 49 pints. I believe this is only the second time in the 12 or more years that we have been doing it, that we did not reach our goal but did have 38 pints donated. The next Bloodmobile will be back from noon until 5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 12. Duke Daugherty had always been a faithful donor and I think that many that usu- ally donate were in Smyrna at the benefit dinner for him. When I picked up my plate Skip Waters, our weatherman, was there and the place was very crowded. Everyone turned out to help Duke but that left our donations down. This time of the year folks are on vacation and donations are down all over, but the need is still very real. Plan to come out and donate Sept. 12. It doesn’t take long. The longest part is the paper work but I gave a pint in less than five minutes. Come out and join me and get the feeling that you’ve just helped someone. They usu- ally have homemade brownies in the canteen for you after you’ve finished giving. New addition Congratulations to Tera Danielle Gillikin, Sea Level, on the July 13 birth of Gabrielle Elizabeth Joyce Gillikin who weighed 7 pounds 11 ounces and measured 20½ inches long. Grandparents are Curt Gillikin, Otway, and she was born on his birthday, and Teresa Ann Salter, Atlantic; and great-grandparents are Ann Davis, Beaufort and Terry Preston Salter, Michigan. Church news Otway Christian Church will be having an ice cream social at 7 p.m. Wednesday. Members were so glad to see former pastor, the Rev. Merrritt Watson and his wife Linda at the morning worship service at Otway Christian Church last Sunday. Woodville Baptist Church will be holding vacation Bible school from 6 until 8:30 p.m. July 28 through Friday, Aug. 1. The theme will be Agency D3.

Sympathy

Annie Frances Rose Willis went home to be with Jesus and her husband of 56 years, Earl Willis, July 7 at Pruitt Health Care Center, with her family by her side. Her funeral was a celebration of her life July 11 at Lighthouse Chapel and as the family entered they played “Christians Don’t Die” sung by the Lighthouse Trio. Annie had been a member of that trio so she even sang at her own funeral. The Grace Holiness Trio sang “Heaven For Me” and Bill Stone, a professional opera singer sang “How Great Thou Art” with his wife Bonnie play-ing the piano. Former pastor the Rev. Dan Parker preached and told several funny Harkers Island stories. The Rev. Ricky Rose also officiated and inter-ment followed at Vergie Mae Cemetery.

She is survived by two daugh-ters, Sherry Hamilton and hus-band Richard of Gloucester and Edwina Willis and Frank Noe of Morehead City; special neph-ew, Joe Willis of Lilburn, Ga.; three grandsons, Kevin Guthrie, Otway, Neil Brown, Gloucester, Benjamin Guthrie, Beaufort; five great-grandchildren, Nadia, Onesty, Kyra, Hayley, and Bentley; and four sisters, Nova Doris Smith, Jacksonville, Louise Golden, Straits, Sidney Richardson and Betty Jean

Gillikin, both of Otway. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, Edwin and Lela Rose.

Our deepest sympathy to the family of Guy W. Lewis Jr. who passed away July 12 at Cherry Point Bay Nursing Home. He is survived by his life compan-ion, Charlene Willis; son, Jared Willis; daughter, Nicole Dudley and husband Scott; grand-daughter, Kendalyn; grandson, Christopher Gaskill; sisters, Judith Golden, Kay Willis and Laura Lewis, all of Smyrna and Jeanna Potter of Gloucester; also many nieces and nephews.

Condolences also to the fam-ily of Aileen Player Newkirk who passed away peacefully at home July 12. Her funeral was held July 16 at Marshallberg Baptist Church with Rev. Lee officiating. Burial followed in Victoria Cemetery. She is sur-vived by two sons, Arthur Craig Newkirk of the home and James Edward Newkirk of Pensacola, Fla.; brother, Edward Player of Aiken, S.C.; two sisters, Bonnie Hendrick of Conway, S.C., and Georgette Wilson of Awendaw, S.C.; sister-in-law, Jenny Williamson of Marshallberg; two grandchildren, Lindsay Nicole Newkirk and Anthony Nathaniel Newkirk; and one great-grand-child, McKenna Newkirk. Again a lot of us knew Aileen because her children grew up with ours.

Come ‘n’ go

There are a lot of folks all excited that 7-month-old Jaelyn Grace Beachem and her folks, Brittany and Michael Beachem, arrived in Carteret County July 15 for a visit and to meet some of her family that haven’t seen the infant yet.

Michael is serving our country

and is stationed at Kirtland Air Force Base, Albuquerque, N.M.

They visited Tweetsie Railroad, Grandfather Mountain, canoe-ing down the New River, visited Blowing Rock, Banner Elk, Boone and downtown West Jefferson. Making the trip were Curtis and Katrina Gillikin and their daugh-ters Emily Gillikin and Michelle and Mark Quillen and their two children, Madison and Mason; Dusty Quillen, Laurana Gillikin, Jackie Smith with her grandson Cole Smith, Rhonda Gillikin Dixon with her two children Chris Dixon and Danielle and Jamie Gillikin with their daugh-ter, Taylor. The evenings were filled with seafood dinners, steaks on the grill, corn hole games, fire-works and outdoor fireplace with roasted s’mores.

Otway Fire Department

Otway Fire and Rescue held their regular monthly meeting July 14 conducted by Randall Stephens. Officers that were elected last month and were pres-ent at this meeting were installed. Birthdays for this quarter were

recognized and cake and ice cream were served. It was report-ed that the Bloodmobile that was July 11 did not reach the quota of 49 pints. I believe this is only the second time in the 12 or more years that we have been doing it, that we did not reach our goal but did have 38 pints donated.

The next Bloodmobile will be back from noon until 5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 12. Duke Daugherty had always been a faithful donor and I think that many that usu-ally donate were in Smyrna at the benefit dinner for him. They usu-ally have homemade brownies in the canteen for you after you’ve finished giving.

New addition

Congratulations to Tera Danielle Gillikin, Sea Level, on the July 13 birth of Gabrielle Elizabeth Joyce Gillikin who weighed 7 pounds 11 ounces and measured 20½ inches long. Grandparents are Curt Gillikin, Otway, and she was born on his birthday, and Teresa Ann Salter, Atlantic; and great-grandparents are Ann Davis, Beaufort and Terry Preston Salter, Michigan.
