Welcome to Agribition 2012. After 40 years of working with the Simmental breed in various capacities, it is very gratify-ing to observe the tremendous commitment numerous people have made to get where we are today. One of the things I continue to appreciate is the hard work put forth by the exhibitors and sale consignors every year to parade before the public at Agribition and promote this great breed. It is always rewarding to see you folks fill the seats and support their efforts both show and sale day.

The 2012 sale offering is as solid as we have seen in years. The open heifer offering definitely has some diversity, in a breed that has come to be appreciated for that, as well as being a real cornerstone in the beef industry. These open heifers will be potential candidates to build a herd around or take you to the pay window at an elite show.The five bred heifers speak volumes to maternal, in a breed second to none maternally. The flush lot has a track record of turning a reasonable investment into a stout financial decision. The exclusive semen lot will feature one of the truly proven herd sires in the Simmental breed. A bull capable of siring herd bulls to headline your bull sale, but a bull that will give you predictable calving ease and a set of replacements capable of showcasing your front pasture.

Please take the time to be in attendance show and sale day. It is your attendance that makes this the great event it continues to be. Every year the SSA auctions off a donated heifer by Dutch Auction at the Canadian Western Agribition. All proceeds raised fund the SSA Scholarship Fund.

The 2012 heifer has been generously donated by Stough-ton Farms and will be auctioned November 21, following the Simmental Show during the Pick of the Barn.

Pick of the Barn

• $10 from every Gold & Silver membership sold goes into a jackpot. Vote for the heifer calf that you think will be the crowd favorite. All the names that correctly picked Miss Agribition 2012 will go into a draw. The jackpot will be split 50/50 between the name drawn and the owner of the heifer calf.

• Calendar year bull and heifer calves only eleigible to be entered.

• A draw will take place at 5:00pm, November 21 in the Simmental Barn. The final ticket drawn will be given the right to select their Pick of the Barn from one of the nominated animals.

• Gold Level Membership: $200 (plus GST), one animal entry, one draw ticket, and one ballot. Additional entries $100 (plus GST) each. Contact Carolyn McCormack at 306-697-2945

• Silver Level Membership: $110 (includes GST) for one draw ticket and one ballot. Please make memberships payable to the Saskatchewan Simmental Association. Silver memberships can be pre-purchased or will be available at the show until 4:45pm on November 21.

• Entries will be accepted until November 20 at noon. The animals entered will be identified by stall cards. All Simmental animals will have tie-outs delayed to allow for the draws to be completed and an animal to be selected.

• Grand Prize draw winner receives full possession and ownership of the animal they select. If a bull calf is selected, the owner will retain 50% semen interest. The contributor of the animal picked will receive $10,000. A Grand Prize draw win-ner cannot select an animal in which they have whole or part ownership in. Sponsorship draws for secondary prizes will be made throughout the process of the draw.

Renata 42Z is a deep, attractive “Crocket” daughter with a great disposition and endless potential. 42Z’s dam pro-duced the super sweet Bravado heifer that sold in the Agri-bition Sale as a calf to Tessiers. Her Dam also had one of our lead-off red bulls at the Southwest Showcase Bull Sale last spring. 42Z’s Grandam Renata 20R was purchased at Farm-fair’s Northern Image Sale as a calf and has had some stellar calves over the years. The Renata cows have that rare abil-ity to produce both fancy females and powerful bull calves and we expect 42Z to be no different. A unique pedigree here! Mutombo was a bull we selected to flush one of our very best red cows to last year, as he was a different pedigree for red genetics, and his performance numbers are exceptional! The five siblings we have on the ground this year look very good. They are long-spined, nice-footed, have lots of capacity, and are weighing up at the top of the calf crop. The two bull calves in the flush weighed close to 1100 pounds early October, and the other two fe-males will be retained in the herd. The dam of these calves is a Limited Black cow we purchased from Crossroads out of Checkers a few years back. She has been an exceptional pro-ducer! Every calf this female has produced has either been a female that we have consigned to an elite fall sale or a bull that has been featured in our annual bull sale. Last spring she produced a high selling red bull who sold for $12,500 to Pioneer Simmentals. If you analyze this cow, she is flawless-uddered, very sound-footed, moderate-framed, and has lots of spring and depth of rib. This heifer calf is nicely put to-gether, as she is broody-made, very good-footed, very long-bodied, good-haired, and overall a very easy keeper. She is Homozygous Polled by parentage.

Needless to say, her three full siblings last year were all at the top of the calf crop. She was the only full sibling born this past spring, and once again, she is a ringer! She is extremely stout-made, has piles of rib shape and body capacity, and still maintains a nice front end. The 680S prog-eny are easily some of the top black genetics still available. The semen is very rare and in high demand, and the off-spring still available for sale is reducing every year. They are making great breeding cattle for many producers around north America. The dam of this female is a powerhouse female. We showed her as a bred heifer getting named Re-serve Champion Female at the Olds Fall Classic, she won her class at the National show in Brandon, and stood third in a very competitive class at Agribition.
