BIOMEDICALHUMANITIESUNIT
OvertheyearstheFOLSATECstudentshavebeenalsothecoreoftheBiomedicalHumanitiesUnitattheDepartmentofExperimentalOncologyoftheIEO.Itconsistedofthreesub‐units:ResearchUnit1:FoundationalquestionsThereareatleasttwowaysofaddressingbiomedicineandclinicalpracticefromaphilosophicalperspective:oneismoreattentivetothephilosophicalsideandonemoreattentivetothescientificside.Concerningtheformer,wewereinterestedintheconceptualanalysisbothoftermsbelongingtobiomedicalresearchorclinicalpractice(gene,susceptibility,disease,therapy,cancer,stemcell,modelorganism,etc.)andoftermsthatmaybeexplicatedbymeansofbiomedicalknowledge(life,death,individuality,organism,etc.).Regardingthelatter,weproposedaphilosophythathasarealimpactonscience,bothatresearchandatclinicallevel.Forexample,i)wedevelopedaformallanguagethatshouldpermittowriteintra‐andinfra‐cellularprocessesascomputabletheorems;ii)weworkedonbio‐ontologieswhich,intheseyears,haveagreatrelevancerelativelytotheelaboration,storageandretrievaloftheenormousbulkofdatacomingfromthelabandfromtheclinicalresearch.ResearchUnit2:IndividualandpublicethicalquestionsEachstepofthechainfromthescientist’slabbenchtothepatient’sbedsideraisesahostofethicalissues,bothattheindividuallevelandatthecollectivelevel.Ourresearchfocusedonsomeofthese,forexamplethoseraisedbybiobanks,consent,clinicaltrials,humanembryonicstemcells,vaccination,andsoon.Ouraimwastoimprovethequalityofthepublicdiscussionontheseimportantissuesaswellastopromoteresponsibleindividualchoicesandeffectivepublicpolicies(wetouchedissuessuchasdemocraticlegitimationofpublicpolicyconcerninghealthmatter,responsibleandactivecitizenshipinthehealthdomain,freedomofchoiceandexpressioninrelationtoresearchandtreatment,etc.).Ourresearchwascharacterised,atpubliclevel,byanemphasisondeliberativepracticesand,atindividuallevel,onthenecessityofagoodethicalcounselingtoreallyempowerpatientsinfrontofanydiagnosticortherapeuticaction.ResearchUnit3:SocietalquestionsInourScienceandTechnologyStudiesapproachwefocusedonthemutualshapingofepistemicandnormativeordersthatariseattheinterfaceofbiomedicineandsociety.PUBBLICATIONSOvertheyears,theBiomedicalHumanitiesUnithasproducedaboutthe90%ofthepaperspublishedininternationalpeerreviewjournalsbyItalianinstitutionsinthethreefieldsofexpertise.Inparticularthenon‐tenuredmembers(thePhDstudents)havepublished:
