1. SUMMARY OF BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

Education: Dr Elizabeth Papathanassoglou has received her BSc in Nursing from the University of Athens, Greece, a Masters degree from the Erasmus European Inter-University Collaboration Program, her PhD from the University of Rochester, NY, USA, and post-doctoral training as a research fellow at Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA, USA. Her area of clinical practice and research is critical care nursing. Research Activities: Dr Papathanassoglou’s research interests combine basic science with the nursing management of acutely ill patients. She explores the effects of non-pharmacological, integrative interventions and stress responses in critical care. She studies the role of stress, stress neuropeptides and apoptosis in the pathophysiology of critical illness and multiple organ dysfunction (MODS) and the impact on non-pharmacological and integrative approaches on critically ill patients’ outcomes, including inflammation, pain and delirium. Additionally, she explores issues of inter-professional collaboration, nursing autonomy and clinical decision-making, as well as patients’ rights and ethical aspects of critical care. Another strong area of interest focuses on the phenomenological investigation of the lived experience of patients and nurses in intensive care and the phenomena of caring, empathy and advocacy. She employs a wide range of research methods, including laboratory, quantitative and qualitative research. Publications and citations: Dr Papathanassoglou has a record of 122 publications in peer reviewed journals. Her published work has received over 2,040 citations (h-index: 23). She is the author of three nursing textbooks in Greek, and co- editor at one international peer-reviewed journal, as well as member of the editorial board of 3 international and 1 national peer-review journals. She has delivered 65 invited lectures at international and national conferences, has presented another 200 papers at international and national conferences, and has received 12 awards for conference papers. She is elected Ambassador of the World Federation of Critical Care Nurses (WFCCN) 2015-2020, WFCCN’s representative to the Global Sepsis Alliance Network and co-editor of CONNECT: The World of Critical Care Nursing, The official journal of WFCCN. Teaching Activities: Dr Papathanassoglou has 18 years of teaching experience, at pre- and post-graduate level in the fields of intensive care nursing, research methodology, evidence-based practice, holistic nursing and advanced practice. Administrative activities: Dr Papathanassoglou is member at the Research Review Committee, Graduate studies Committee, and Faculty and students relations Committee, at the Faculty of Nursing, University of Alberta. Prior to that she served as Head of the Department of Nursing and of the Doctoral Program and as elected member of the University Senate, Cyprus University of Technology. She was Head of the Masters of Science and she chaired numerous committees at the Cyprus University of Technology. Her role was critical in the initiation of the Masters of Science Program in Advanced Practice, as well as of the Doctoral Program Curriculum at the Cyprus University of Technology. She has founded and was the director of the Nursing Biological Research Laboratory at the Cyprus University of Technology.

In total, 17 years of autonomous teaching as faculty member at pre-graduate and post-

graduate curricula (University of Athens, Cyprus University of technology, University of Alberta), and 7

years as a teaching assistant, as well as clinical instructor, at the under-graduate and post-

graduate level, at the University of Athens, School of Nursing, and at the University of Rochester,

School of Nursing, as well as other various teaching activities including the Nursing Diploma to

Bachelor Transition Program at the Technological University of Cyprus.

At the Cyprus University of Technology, I proposed, designed- along with a group of

colleagues- implemented and currently direct the Masters Program in Advanced Practice, which

consists of 4 tracks: intensive care, cardiac intensive care, public health and mental health. I am

currently in charge of and I teach a lot of modules in the critical care track. I am currently advising 6

Masters dissertation research theses and I participate in the 2-member advising committee of 6

dissertations additionally.

I have also proposed and implemented a structured curriculum of studies at the Doctoral

Program of the Department of Nursing, which did not formerly require any coursework. Ours is the

first structured curriculum of doctoral studies at the University. I am currently in charge of and I teach a

lot of the modules in the doctoral program. I am currently advising 6 doctoral dissertation theses with

critical care related topics and I participate in the 3-member advising committee of additionally 4

dissertations.

I was Head of the Nursing Diploma to Bachelor Transition Program at the Technological
