AREAS OF ACADEMIC ACTIVITY
Research
My research focuses on how to help people, regardless of who they are or where they live, use state-of-the-art information and communication technologies (ICTs), with enthusiasm, proficiency and confidence, to achieve the highest possible levels of health and well-being, and to help the health system make the most efficient use of available resources.
My work blends interests in eHealth innovation; pain relief and supportive care; evidence-based decision-making; social networks and public engagement in research and health-related decisions, education and health care decision-making. I am also actively involved in several international academic-private sector partnerships to improve the quality of research to accelerate the transformation of the health system in the information age, and minimize inequality in health in societies across the world.
I am leading the People, Health equity and Innovation (PHI) Group, a program of research that attempts to level the playing field for disadvantaged groups in society, through the use of information and communication technologies, particularly social networking tools. The research activities of the PHI Group focus on youth leadership development, health in multicultural environments and the promotion of supportive care for people living with complex chronic diseases (with emphasis on the alleviation of pain and unnecessary suffering, and the improvement of end-of-life care).
I am convening the Global eHealth and eWellness Network Initiative (GENI, pronounced as “genie”), a network of individuals and organizations that share an interest in working together on projects that could enable people to achieve optimal levels of health and well-being, transcending geographic, institutional, disciplinary and cultural boundaries. I am also developing and evaluating virtual clinics to enhance the encounter between patients and providers, tools to promote public engagement in population health initiatives, and novel approaches to the use of ICTs to support virtual communities and social networks, and to the application of Web 2.0 resources to help people shape society.
Education
I am interested in approaches to education and knowledge management for health professionals and members of the public that go beyond text to more ‘natural’ or primal ways of representing and

exchanging information. I am particularly interested in “edutainment”, the blend of education and entertainment through the use of multimedia, virtual reality, animation, social networking tools, new visualization techniques and other multi-sensory modes of communication.
Service and Administration
I support the development of the Centre for Global eHealth Innovation [http://www.ehealthinnovation.org], the Rose Family Chair in Supportive Care at University of Toronto, and the CIHR Canada Research Chair in eHealth Innovation as means to promote the sustainability of society in Canada and beyond. I was the founding President of the Spanish eHealth Foundation (I am now President Emeritus), which enabled the creation of the Spanish eHealth Network and Revista eSalud, the leading journal and portal in the Hispanic world focused on eHealth [www.revistaesalud]. In 2005, I was invited by the World Health Organization to act as the representative for the American continent, sitting as a member of its Global Observatory for eHealth’s Strategic Advisory Group of Experts (SAGE).
I am now the Chair of the Board of the Foundation of the Institute for Innovation on Human Wellbeing, in Andalusia, Spain, overseeing the development of a centre and large-scale projects designed to re-create every aspect of human life, including homes, workplaces, learning spaces and multi-cultural communities. The Institute is a core element of a multi-billion euro effort to enable Andalusia to become a major world player in the Age of Innovation.
Consulting
I enjoy to work as a consultant to major organizations - public, private or community-based - engaged in efforts to transform the health system through evidence-based decision-making, eHealth innovations and global collaboration. My main areas of strength are my eclectic clinical, academic and ethno-cultural background, a strong global perspective that respects and acknowledges local needs, my skill to distil large amounts of knowledge and to identify efficient paths for success, my ability to communicate effectively with diverse audiences, and to bring together people and organizations many years before they were meant to connect with each other.
