Specific educational goals and
description of the curriculum
The Degree Course in Agriculture Science and Technology will provide knowledge and
know-how specific to the agronomist expert. The agronomist is most and foremost an
agriculture expert as well as a professional who knows how to grant safety, quality, healthiness
of food through innovative methods. He can also reduce waste and environmental footprint,
making economy and production ethics meet.
According to the operating context, the agronomist’s competences can be more or less general
(in other words, directed towards horizontal organization and administration aspects) or more or
less specific (in other words directed towards only one production sector or only one agriculture
technique or organization method).
Based upon these premises, the Degree Course in Agriculture Science and Technology is
divided into two curricula which, on one hand, allow to highlight the general address of the
course and, on the other, it allows to examine in depth the crop production. The first curriculum
is shaped to give a comprehensive view upon activities and problems linked to the
administration of an agricultural business. The second curriculum offers a complete view on the
production and protection problems. Therefore the occupational perspectives of Agricultural
Science and Technology graduates are broad.
The Agricultural Science and Technology graduates could become an entrepreneur and/or a
small agricultural businesses administrator as well as a professional provider of technical
assistance in all the companies operating in the production, conditioning, preservation and
marketing chain of products of vegetable and animal origin.
The Agricultural Science and Technology graduate can work in companies linked with the
chains mentioned above (manufacturers and distributors of machinery and installations) and: in
logistics, in the large scale retail trade, in public and private institutions which carry out
planning, analysis, control, certification and scientific testing relative to quality, food of
vegetable origin safety and the valorization of the productions. They can also manage
agricultural development programs cooperating with the European Union and with international
agencies.
The Agricultural Science and Technology course has a three year duration equal to the
achievement of 180 university credits (ECTS) divided into two curricula: “Rural Systems’
Management” and “Plant production and protection”. The curricula are both divided into 20
exams including the ones chosen by the student. The course ends with the acquisition of all the
ECTS necessary to pass the final test which can be carried out before the end of the third year of
the course if 177 ECTS have been achieved.

The course includes an traineeship (9 ECTS) carried out in a public or private institution
with which the University of Bari has signed an agreement. The traineeship will be the base
upon which the final essay will be written (3 ECTS) and discussed during the final test to
achieve the title. The traineeship can start only after the acquisition of at least 90 ECTS and
after passing all the first year exams. The student has to choose which curriculum during the
on-line enrolling phase and deliver to the Student’s Secretary’s Office the requested
documents relevant to the declaration.

Knowledge and understanding Graduates in Agricultural Science and Technology will eventually possess:
- An adequate basic knowledge in mathematics, physics, information technologies, chemistry
and biology;
- familiarity with disciplinary methodologies and ability to use the knowledge to solve
problems of the agriculture sector;
- knowledge and laboratory skills in the agriculture sector with particular attention to:
the quantitative and qualitative aspects of vegetable and animal productions;
problems connected with the arable land;
estimate: land assets, machinery, installations and agricultural products;
- knowledge of the agricultural business context and its economical, management and
organizational aspects;
- knowledge of plant production and protection business contexts and their economical,
management and organizational aspects;
- theoretical knowledge and laboratory skills in the plant production and protection with
particular attention to:
quantitative and qualitative aspects of the production;
products used for the production and the integrated and biological plant protection,
and their healthiness and their sustainability;
knowing the machinery, equipment and installations;
application of quality certifications’ standards;
problems of the agricultural land;
estimate of land assets and of damages to the plants caused by biological and non-

- knowledge of the animal production business context and its economical, management and
organizational aspects including healthiness, machinery and installations;
- knowledge of the principles and the areas of interest of the professional activities and
relevant regulations and professional ethics.
The learning results expected are achieved by attending theoretical courses, practical courses
and traineeship sessions together with individual study and eventually tutorial activities.
The knowledge and the understanding abilities will be verified by final exams for each course.

Applying knowledge and understanding Graduates in Agricultural Science and Technology who will choose the “general” curriculum
will be able to use the land maps in order to evaluate the quality of the soil to decide for its use
(sludge disposal, waste, wastewater and weedy water). The graduate will be able to implement
acquired knowledge by solving technical problems of the agricultural sector with particular
attention to the problems inherent the agricultural business and the relevant economical,
managerial and organizational aspects; it will be able to estimate land assets, equipment and
installations and agricultural products.
Graduates in Agricultural Science and Technology who will choose the plant production and
protection curriculum will possess theoretical knowledge and laboratory skills in the plant
production and protection sector, with particular attention to quantitative and qualitative aspects
of production, including:
the sustainability and the healthiness;
the knowledge of machinery and installations;
the knowledge of the products used for the production and the integrated and biological
protection of plants;
the estimate of land assets and of damages to the plants caused by biological and non-
biological factors.
The ability to apply knowledge and comprehension are evaluated by final exams for each course.
Autonomous judgment Graduates in Agricultural Science and Technology will be able to acquire information relevant
to agricultural activities and to evaluate the implications in a production and market context in
order to set measures needed to improve quality and efficiency of the agricultural productions and
of any other activity, also in terms of environmental sustainability and eco-compatibility.
The achievement of autonomous judgment is verified by evaluating the courses of
each course plan and by evaluating the grade of autonomy and group working
abilities shown during the activity assigned for the traineeship and for the final
test.

Communication Skills Graduates in Agricultural Science and Technology will be able to communicate efficiently,
orally and in writing, with people of same or lower competencies using, in the specific
disciplinary context, the English language. The acquisition of communication skills, either oral or
in writing is verified by the production of a paper relevant to the traineeship and final test
activities.
Learning skills Graduates in Agricultural Science and Technology will possess the basic cognitive skills
indispensable for the continuous updating of information relative to this sector. This is also done
using new communication technologies and IT in order to direct the knowledge towards the
solution of practical problems in the plant and/or animal production as well as business
administration sectors.
Learning skills are verified by the analysis of each student’s carrier in relation with the exam
marks and with the time passed between the course end and the exam passed and by the
evaluation of the auto-learning abilities developed during the final test activity progress.

The study course offers interesting and diversified job opportunities in the plant and animal
production control and technology sector in their quantitative and qualitative aspects, in the
businesses administration, the estimate of land assets, equipment installation and agricultural
sector products as well as agronomic works projects. The course prepares for the carriers of
Junior Agronomist (after passing a state exam), Agronomic Technician, Business Consultant.
The Course prepares to the profession of Agronomist and Zootechnician
Admission requirements The study course in Agricultural Science and Technology has been instituted without
admission limits except the ones established by law. Admissions to the course require the
possession of a secondary school diploma or other title achieved in a foreign country and
recognized adequate and after passing a basic knowledge test.

The test held in September consists in a multiple answer test on basic disciplines such as
Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics. Those passing the test have to attend a recovery
course, to improve their preparation, before the normal course starts. At the end the students
must pass a test to prove they have filled the education gap and to prove they can pass the
proficiency tests. In case of negative results of the test, the Faculty assigns to the student an
educational debt which will be fulfilled passing a recovery test.

Ways to transfer from other courses
Student’s transfer from another course can happen only presenting detailed documentation
released from the previous course certifying passed exams with marks and acquired ECTS.
A Course Board, or other specific educational authority approves a full or partial recognition of
the ECTS acquired in another course of the same faculty or other faculty of other Italian or foreign
university, given that the course admission requisites are satisfied. The Board will also evaluate the
consistency between the knowledge, skills and competences acquired by the applicant and the
educational goals of the course.
In case of transfer from a Study Course belonging to the same Class, the amount of credits
relevant to scientific-disciplinary sectors shared by both courses directly recognized to the student
will be not less than 50% of those already matured.

Individual course plans’ presentation rules The student can acquire the 12 ECTS for the free choice subjects choosing whatever subject
offered, among the first level Graduation Courses offered by the “Aldo Moro” University of Bari,
as long as it is recognized as consistent with the educational path by the Course Board or other
specific educational authority and after the assent of the relevant Didactic Committee. The
student could also choose among the subjects specifically offered by the Faculty and indicated as
consistent with the graduation course. In this case student’s choice is, anyways, subject to the
fulfillment of the conditions established by the Faculty for the activation of above said subjects.
The student must present to the Faculty’s Student Secretary within December 31st of the first
course year the list of the chosen subjects.

This applicative subject provides the knowledge relevant to basic mathematics. Starting
from numbers also equations and inequations of 1st and 2
nd degree definitions will be
given. The course will illustrate the fundamentals of analytic geometry and trigonometry.
The concept of function will be studied examining its domain of existence, the continuity
and derivability along with the research of the relevant maximums and minimums and on
to the study of the function’s graph. Principles of combinatorics and statistics are included.

This subject provides with basic information regarding cytology, histology, anatomy,
physiology. It also includes phylogenesys and plant taxonomy indispensable in order for the
students to have adequate knowledge of the morpho-functional organization, reproductive
mechanisms and botanical characteristics. It focuses also on the importance of agriculturally
interesting species as well as the phylogenetic relations and the taxonomical placement of the
agriculturally interesting species.

This subject provides the basics of solids and liquids mechanics, thermophysics,
electrology, magnetism and optics.

This subject provides the students with the basic theoretical and practical knowledge and it
is considered a fundamental one. Molecules’ and elements’ characteristics are studied and
the principal chemical and chemical-physical laws governing matter transforming processes
are analyzed. The three states of matter, solutions and electrochemistry are then considered.
Particular attention is paid to the solution balances and to the pH. Also the principal
functional groups of organic molecules are studied.
Agricultural Genetics

This subject provides the principles of hereditary traits the application of which enables an
insight in the knowledge regarding the genetic control and the gene expression of those
interesting traits of the vegetable and animal species. The subject also includes the
fundamentals of quantitative genetics and population.

Rural Systems’ Management Curriculum
Soil chemistry

This subject provides the basics and insight for the completion of the preparation in the
Soil chemistry sector. Formation and classification of soils, their fertility, their chemical,
physical and chemical-physical properties will be studied.
Water quality for irrigation uses including wastewater, fertilizers, compost and problems
linked with soil pollution and its protection.
General Agronomics

This subject provides knowledge relevant to the climatic factors, the agronomic aspects
tied with the agricultural land, to the water/soil ratios, to the soil preparation techniques, to
the dry soil cultivating techniques, to the irrigation and fertilization, to cultivating systems,
to weeding, and to agricultural ecosystems.

The subject provides basic elements of zootechnically interesting animals’ morphology,
anatomy and physiology aimed at the optimization of diverse breeding techniques.
It provides basic notions about reproductive techniques, species improvements, breeding
and rational use of domestic animals. The program is divided in: elements of statistics and
classical genetics (single genes in breeding), population genetics and quantitative genetics.
The subject is set in a sustainable animal production perspective. The student must learn
notions regarding the zootechnical system paying particular attention to the different
territorial areas and their cultural traditions. The course includes visits to state-of-the-art
farms and cheese factories.
Zoology and Agricultural Entomology
(AGR/11 - 6 ects of which 4F and 2E)
The subject provides basic ecological, biological and morphological elements regarding
principal economically interesting animal groups in agriculture. It examines the
organizational and functional systems of animals, the intra and inter-specific relations
between them, the environmental adaptation and animal behaviour. The subject provides
knowledge relevant to the containment of harmful insect populations respecting natural
balance and human health. In this perspective, phylogenesys, classification, morphology,
anatomy, physiology, ethology, reproduction, development, the potential biotic-
environmental relation are studied. There will be also space for containment means and
control strategies.
Arboriculture

The subject provides insight with regards to topics relevant to the propagation of
fructiferous trees and plant nursery activities, elements of organology, flower biology and
fructification, the pedoclimatic needs of the fructiferous trees species of temperate climate,
the plantation, the management of the trees and of the soil, the ripening and fruit
harvesting.
