BBB has been commissioned to design a major rehabilita-tion to the Main Fountain Garden at Longwood Gardens, created by Pierre duPont in the 19th century. Consisting of eight significant water features and set within an archi-tectural framework of Italianate renaissance loggias, arcades and basins, and a rich horticultural display, the 80 year-old complex is compromised by numerous mechan-ical problems. The centralized pump system is no longer state-of-the-art and has numerous leaks and equipment failures. The lighting and control systems are similarly obsolete. The design approach is based on thorough historic research, client program review, site analysis, and existing conditions assessment.

Beacon Theatre New York, NY
BBB restored the 2,829-seat Beacon Theatre, opened in 1929 as a motion picture “palace” and one of New York City’s most iconic entertainment venues, known for the high caliber of its performances and its superior acoustics. BBB led the comprehensive restoration of the historic interior public spaces, backstage, and back-of-house areas. The restoration was based on extensive research including detailed, on-site examination of original decorative painting techniques. More than 1,000 artisans, craftsmen, and tradesmen worked on the project.

New World StagesNew York, NY
Located in midtown Manhattan, the former Worldwide Plaza movie multiplex has been transformed into five theaters for live productions. The venue includes two 499-seat theaters, two 360-seat theaters, and a 199-seat theater—accommodating a total of nearly 2,000 theater-goers and as many as five different shows running concurrently. Within the space, a lively new public gathering place has been created. A wall of light with projections rises to the full double height of the west side of the space. The light also serves as a cue for audi-ences—large numerals (one for each of the five theaters) light up to tell patrons that a show is about to begin.

BBB has been working with Lincoln Center for over a decade, beginning with a Capital Needs Survey in 1999 when Lincoln Center embarked upon a revitalization plan to prepare the world-renowned Performing Arts Center for the 21st century. As a result of the master plan, Lincoln Center initiated a number of projects such as: Street of the Arts along West 65th Street; expansion of Juilliard School; renovation of Alice Tully Hall; and the renova-tion of the David H. Koch Theater. One major project that grew out of the master plan is The Promenade, for which BBB served as the Executive Architect with Diller Scofidio + Renfro.

BLDG 92: Brooklyn Navy Yard Center Brooklyn, NY
BBB, in collaboration with workshop/apd, designed the adaptive reuse and addition to the 19th-century former Marine Commandant’s residence into a modern and sustainable home for the Brooklyn Navy Yard Center. The facility includes a public venue and exhibition space with classrooms, a café, and leasable commercial space. The new 4-story addition is a contemporary interpretation of the surrounding industrial vernacular, yet also serves as a complementary backdrop to the restored historic building. In support of the Navy Yard’s mission as a national model for sustainable industrial parks, the building has achieved LEED Platinum certification.

Beyer Blinder Belle served as Executive Architect for this 23-story condominium tower, designed by Ateliers Jean Nouvel, in Manhattan’s West Chelsea neighborhood. A complex curved curtain wall of nearly 1,700 different-sized panes of colorless glass, each with a unique angle and torque, creates floor-to-ceiling window walls that frame expansive views of the Hudson River. A seven-story street wall of mullioned glass creates a privacy screen, while a structural steel grid occupying the void between the tower and the wall forms a semi-enclosed atrium with private indoor and outdoor terraces.
Center for Jewish HistoryNew York, NY
The Center for Jewish History creates an unparalleled opportunity to bring together the resources of five institutions specializing in Jewish cultural research, anal-ysis, preservation, and interpretation. The existing site consists of two neo-Georgian structures, a 12-story and a 4-story loft building, and a vacant lot. New construc-tion in an existing courtyard and on the vacant lot joins the buildings into one complex. The program includes an auditorium, state-of-the-art archive and library facilities, reading rooms, a classroom, 12,000 SF of exhibit space, a museum shop, and a cafe.

Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge Visitor Contact Station Queens, NY
The new visitor contact station serves as the gateway to the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge beyond, one of the most important avian flyways in the northeastern United States. It provides exhibit and presentation spaces for the public, as well as a resource library, administrative offices, bookshop, outdoor education lab, and public restrooms. The building is set on a bluff, nestled within a sensitive wetland landscape overlooking Jamaica Bay. was founded in 1968, in the
wake of the urban renewal movement in the United
States, when the social fabric of cities, communities,
and buildings was compromised by the prevailing atti-
tudes about planning and architecture. We pioneered
and defined a different approach to the design of
the built environment that focused on architecture
empowering people — their interaction with each other
on streets and in neighborhoods, their pleasure in
moving through the city, and their connections to the
surrounding physical fabric.
This mission has guided us for four decades and has
shaped a broad and award-winning practice — now
155 professionals in New York City and Washington,
DC engaged in architecture, planning, and interiors.
Many of our projects still involve the steward-ship of
historic buildings in sensitive urban sites — the work
for which we have become best recognized. Our deep
sense of identity and evolving perspectives on design
have guided our practice in new construction as well
as master planning and urban design. With our clients
and friends, we continue the dialogue.
