    GREEN BUILDING & LEED

Green building is the practice of:

    1. Increasing the efficiency with which buildings use and harvest energy, water & materials

    2. Reducing building impacts on human health and the environment

Key Elements of a Green Building:

Energy efficient- a generally tight house with energy efficient use of water,

    energy efficient appliances, windows

Cooling and Heating units and HVAC and ventilation systems.

Recycled content used in the building process

Uses environmentally sustainable materials like bamboo

Uses the building lot or site in a sustainable manner

    Use of locally manufactured goods

    Water conservation

    Indoor environmental air quality

    GREEN BUILDING & LEED

    Importance

Save money, increase comfort & create healthier environments for

    people to live and work

Improved indoor air quality, natural daylight & thermal comfort.

Energy use by depleting natural resources as well as CO2 emissionsis one of our most important environmental impacts.

Volatile energy markets, rising energy costs and increasing

environmental awareness about issues such as global warming make

energy efficiency and conservation a high priority.

Benefits of a Green Building :

    Tangible benefits :

    Energy savings : 20 - 30 %

    Water savings : 30-50%

    Intangible benefits :

    Enhanced air quality

    Excellent day lighting

Health & wellbeing of the occupants

    Conservation of scarce national resources

Enables Corporate achieve a green corporate image

    GREEN BUILDING & LEED

Materials used in a Green Building :

    For Energy efficiency :

Usage of high efficiency windows & insulation in walls, ceilings & floors

Orient windows and treesto shade windows & roofs during the summer while

maximizing solar gain in the winter

Effective window placement can provide more natural light and lessen the need for

    electric lighting during the day

    Use of Solar water heating

Use of renewable energy through solar power, wind power, hydro power or biomass

Creating a high performance luminous environment through the careful integration of

natural and artificial light sources will improve on the lighting quality of a structure

    GREEN BUILDING & LEED

Materials used in a Green Building :

    For Water efficiency :

Designing dual plumbing that recycles water in toilet flushing

Waste-water may be minimized by utilizing water conserving fixtures

such as ultra-low flush toilets and low-flow shower heads

Eliminate the use of toilet paper, reducing sewer traffic and increasing

    possibilities of re-using water on-site

Usage of Greywater or wastewater from sources such as dishwashing

or washing machines, can be used for subsurface irrigation, or if treated,

for non-potable purposes, e.g., to flush toilets and wash cars.

Rainwater collectors are used for similar purposes

    GREEN BUILDING & LEED

Materials used in a Green Building :

    For Material efficiency :

Usage of rapidly renewable plant materials like bamboo

Usage of recycled stone, recycled metal, and other products that are

non-toxic, reusable, renewable, and/or recyclable, e.g. - fly ash bricks,

Using recycled industrial goods, such as coal combustion products,

foundry sand, and demolition debris in construction projects .

Building materials should be extracted and manufactured locally

    GREEN BUILDING & LEED

Materials used in a Green Building :

    For Waste Reduction :

Converting waste and wastewater into fertilizer - by collecting

human waste at the source and running it to a biogas plant with

other biological waste, liquid fertilizer can be produced. This will helpreduce greenhouse gas emission

    Installation of waterless urinal

Rashtrapati Bhavan the most eco friendly building of the country :

'Project Roshini', launched in the first week of July, 2008, is an endeavour to make the 355-room President's

    house estate an eco-friendly township

There are unique projects like recycling of water, world's biggest rainwater harvesting system, use of natural

gas and biogas instead of LPG, zero waste management system and estate is plastic-free zone, a vermi

compose pit has been set up in the premise.

The estate also houses 2,000 households besides contingents from the army, the President's bodyguards,

    ITBP and the Delhi Police.

The Bhawan is equipped with stringent energy audit; all housing is using CFL lighting and solar lamps. There

is proper environmental policy and auditorium run on solar power.

Electric cars and carts are provided for running local tasks within the campus.

Ministry of Renewable Energy has also approved a Rs three-crore project to set up solar panels so that thelamps in the Rashtrapati Bhavan could run totally on solar energy

    GREEN BUILDING & LEED

LEED : The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design

An environmental rating and certification system for residential and commercial buildings from the U.S.

    Green Building Council

    LEED provides benchmarks for :

    Design

Construction and operation of a property

Covers site makeup , building materials, water and energy efficiencyIndoor environmental quality

It also provides certification for people who demonstrate an understanding of green building practices

Evaluation Tools used for measuring factors of Green Building :

A number of software tools are used for measuring energy simulation, day lighting, environmental impact

assessment and surface water run-off calculations.
